TL;DR - At the price point I think this is a solid intense but short horror game that does get a bit too difficult in the later levels. The actual game is simply performing small simple mini games with increasingly difficult time management as more of your systems fail, requiring you to fix them. By the final levels there's very little room for error in the mini games as the systems are almost constantly failing (which is where some of the negative reviews come from). There's also not a lot of explanation on some of the mechanics, you either figure them out or you deal with the game being even harder. The atmosphere is great, framing it as a job simulator where the horror is in the nature of the work, (though there are jumpscares for the deaths). As for the discourse surrounding Angel Engine as a series due its use of Generative AI, I can't say, the game says no Gen AI was used so make of that what you will.
Saw this game after stumbling on some Angel Engine horror short clips on IG. Those videos about the angel storyline were absolutely stunning and creepy, so I got super interested and decided to check it out. This game is pretty repetitive tbh, but the oppressive atmosphere is straight-up chef’s kiss. The whole vibe is dark, claustrophobic and depressing in the best way — you’re trapped in this cold, rusty futuristic lab with flickering lights and distant metallic groans echoing everywhere. The surgery parts are wild. The sound design is insane — those wet squelching noises, the unnatural angelic breathing that slowly turns ragged, and the heart monitors gradually going crazy had me getting more and more anxious. I ended up injecting the paralytic way earlier than I needed to every single time lol But holy shi, when the angel actually wakes up and kills you… that jump scare is brutal. Scared the hell out of me. After that, every time I saw the angel starting to stir, I immediately slammed the abort surgery button xd. Too scared to keep going. Pro tip: turn the game volume down a bit, those jump scare sounds hit way too hard and I was genuinely worried about heart attack xD I really appreciate this kind of high-tension horror game though. It keeps you feeling anxious and uneasy the whole time, which is exactly what I want from a good horror title. Solid 8/10 for me.
Very fun and thrilling game. The reviews saying its bad jus have skill issues. If you're bad with time management and unable to keep up with multiple tasks at once you're going to have a bad time. I love the minigames and pressure you feel from trying to keep yourself alive.
EDIT 6/5/26: Sooo I just found out that the beginning of this series was founded on a bunch of Youtube shorts using a ♥♥♥♥ ton of AI... I'm still going to leave my review positive for the sake of the actual human artists that worked hard on this game, but if I could make it negative I would in a heartbeat. I'm SO SO SO disappointed that something so amazing like this game and its lore began this way and, as an artist, it's a huge ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disappointment. At least the game is not created with any AI, but it doesn't change its origins. The irony of creating a world where humans have been so ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to Mother Earth, using all her resources, only for God to send an angel that's also exploited... AND IT'S A SERIES CREATED BY AI??? HUH??? Ya'll, AI is so so unethical and environmentally ♥♥♥♥♥♥!!! Are you for real?? Have some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tact. That is so embarrassing, and it's embarrassing to the fans of this game who had no idea of its origins, too. Good lord. Shame on the creators of the AE universe honestly. What a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dunderheads. ~~~ OLD REVIEW: This is probably one of the most notable, most awesome horror games ever for me. I loved the concept of this the moment I saw the trailer a month or so ago. If you're someone who has to take medication that sets off your adrenaline, this is a fantastic way to manage it. It's the best outlet I've found for after taking my inhaler, even more than just sleeping it off! It's awesome for anxiety too. You literally can't think about anything else. It was hard for me to talk to my partner while playing and I couldn't be anything but 100% in the game. It's like an amped up Ultimate Custom Night, but so much more nuanced and clean. The environment itself is sooo off-putting and lovely. The actual process of fixing angels is perfect, and the minigames are perfectly doable and don't ask you to remember too much if you're someone with low brain capacity like me. The maze one in particular scratches a certain itch in my brain. But what also struck me as really nice was the rest of the experience: the strange employees, dormant Angel, and security guard all set off my panic mode. It's hard to feel safe in an environment where you can see quick flashes of images or hands crawling over your PC screen. I love that, because the second you open the game, your heart starts racing. I had to take a break every time I failed a couple of operations before diving back in. It feels kinda like beating a really difficult boss in Elden Ring when I beat a really hard level and it gives me a huge dose of dopamine. The visual language is really good and easy to understand, the mechanics aren't tedious for the most part, and it's all in all just such a perfect game to me! I love and appreciate horror games that have lore this interesting, too. Love the computer mechanic and the different controls for it. Just every little thing is shown to have intention behind it and I really appreciate that for a horror game. Definitely give it a shot if you like high-adrenaline experiences and messed up angels!
I'd been following the story on insta for a while and when the game was announced hopped on steam to try it out! I really enjoyed the game, the story and the creative puzzles. Its a small game, sure, but the mid-level puzzles and the analog adjacent ways the game forces you to interact are really refreshing even if the morse code had me going insane for a minute. Great game -- though the actual operations, funnily enough, felt extemely similar to my day job as a barista... in a way. Idk, I felt like I was on bar in a rush sometimes playing this lol
