Aug. 2025
I've played animal shelter 1 and now animal shelter 2 so here's what i think about the current status of the game. Con's: - only a few breeds of cats and dogs, and their kittens or puppies. - little to no choice other than basic food and water. - no stacking option, inventory is a nightmare. if you want to get stocked up for the vet rooms, forget about it. It's really bad, you can easily pick up a furniture item and all of the items placed on it will drop. Good luck picking up that. Besides that it's just painful to play with. 10 Samples are taking all of my space and i can't even put them to some sort of storage, and retrieve them when i need them, because vet doesn't have such options. You can place the items on the floor or shelves and pray for the best, - insulin shots (item) is unplaceable anywhere besides a good chunk of floor. - poor mechanics at the vet. Even though we get so little diseases the treatment gameplay-wise is just boring. We just click and click back, wait and click and click back on the animal. - dog coats look a bit weird, like a wet mop sometimes. - collectables are cool, but not when placed in the middle of nowhere levitating above the ground. :( - there's again (like in animal shelter 1) nothing besides repeating the same things. The location - university, I originally thought that the place would let us study to achieve faster, better quality performance with the animals, but sadly it's just another location that we can travel occasionally. You don't have such upgrades in this game, only better furniture or cleaning supplies and that's it. - pets don't feel alive that much. they are running, playing and walking weirdly most of the time. They are not behaving like a typical pet for me. It's just weird a bit. - No depth in interactions with animals, nothing new for me. - Very little to no diseases at the vet. The gameplay is repeatable no matter what the animal suffers from. It's bring 3 probes, wait, measure the temp, give medicine a, wait give medicine b three times and done. There are no mini games regarding these and it's just boring for me. - The park feels little, and the cities as well. We cannot travel anywhere besides the tiny park, and we cant talk with others there. - Small variety of wallpapers, roofs, cage options etc. - We don't have a house as the player so keeping a pet still at the shelter doesn't feel like it's ours for me. - 380 $ Garbage bin cannot recycle garbage like i thought. It's just a decoration. - Only one leash type which is SO sad. - No clothing for animals during winter. - It's the same goal. Reach level 2 with all the facilities, then level 3. Then what? There are almost to no main quests. There is no bigger goal, like idk our own house, factual overwhelming amount of new things we can buy (rooms, upgrades, new cities, new places to go on walks, new breeds, new customers, new mechanics) nothing changes. It's literally playing the same thing but with a different pet on the screen. I had such hopes for this game but I fear that what I wanted might not be here anytime soon. - No other types of animals. At this point if dogs and cats are this shallow you could add several different animal types. - Every time a person is describing the negative and positive traits we need to just memorise that cause it won't show such info on our tablet. I'm talking about open days. - Pets will constantly ask for being outside, but you need to literally lock them in for this thing to be complete. - Each time I need to make a pet run it's just boring circles on the patio with the leash. It's really boring and most of the dogs are like that. - No point of the office, we have no interaction with the computer, nor does it give us any benefits. It's just there. - Stickers are CRAZY big and can barely placed on a wall. No resize, nothing. - Photo booth is cute, but the camera captures the pets' needs and whims. We cannot align it vertically as well. :( Only one camera, and no room for photos this time. - I feel like every feature from Animal Shelter 1 was improved, but greatly cut in quantity. Which can be felt. There's not that much to unlock sadly. Yeah so I'm sure you guys can still improve this game. It's a start but you can improve it with time and make a really great game out of it. Just please let us have more goals that the level 2 and 3 facilities. Pro's - Better graphics and animations than Animal Shelter 1 - More furniture to place in shelters for cats and dogs. - Collectibles - Actual people showing up this time, we can also see our workers and pick a colour for their attire. - Dogs are covered with snow after a while outside. - Breeds are greatly improved than Animal Shelter 1. We can finally see a dachshund looking like an actual sausage dog. - Nice Shelter Layout. - If you play for 5 hours, it feels like such a joy and a new big adventure. After that, you start feeling sad. Game is sadly out shined by its flaws at the moment. I saw that you've made a road map so I'm really happy to be here and support you through this. I just need to state my opinion after I've purchased the current product. But I still believe in you guys and I have never seen such a game before on steam, It's full of potential. So please, keep up the good work and provide us with more content.

TLDR: I am suggesting this game, because it's gameplay loop is enjoyable, adorable, and is far better in a lot of ways compared to the first game. However, this game is a buggy mess right now. The dev team is putting out a lot of patches, which is notable and makes me more confident that this game isn't going to be like that forever but... please go in with realistic expectations! I played Animal Shelter 1, and always was hyped for new content through their dlcs... Mostly because upon its launch, it lacked content. When I heard they were coming out with a second game, I was really curious to see how they'd handle it after all the experience and suggestions the community gave them during the on-going development of the first game. Would it be a better, more enjoyable experience? Would it have better graphics? More mechanics? Optimized? Well... yes and no! On one hand, this game has far superior graphics, and includes mechanics that were originally DLCs for the prior game, such as a vet clinic, puppies and kittens, and adds things like rescue missions and volunteer work. I know it doesn't sound like a lot, but this means that in the future, if we get DLC, we won't be getting recycled content. And the rescue missions are great. They get you out of your shelter, and it made me feel more attached to the animals because I saw where they came from (abandoned, stuck in fences, starving, etc). My only real issue is that they're short. Too short. I'd like to see ones that actually take a minute, or could potentially be more annoying, but give higher rewards to deal with. Let us save animals from hoarder houses, or let us take in the starving pets we feed at the park. Something like that. Another pro is that the gameplay loop feels smoother, the pets have more in-depth needs before they're adoptable, and upgrades feel more fulfilling to me. Howeverrr... this game is SO buggy. I know this isn't some massive dev team, but the fact it made it to launch with this many problems is concerning. What happened to having a QA team? Why was this deemed an acceptable state to release in? What were they thinking? It's clear they're talented and have good ideas, but this amount of bugs is unacceptable. The only thing that softens this blow is them releasing pretty much daily bug fixes. Some of these have been fixed, but this is a list of bugs me and my friend have encountered on CO-OP: - During a rescue mission, I picked up the ladder and got raptured to heaven. I was literally being slowly dragged into the sky. - Dog and cat cages being unassigned upon log in. - Cats randomly unassigning litter boxes, or claiming boxes in other cages? - Objects randomly getting stuck on the floor - Objects disappearing upon being put down. - Upon opening a save, random objects in a room cluster up like a tornado went through, and you have to pick up and replace each one. This also results in duplicated items sometimes? - Workers changing to completely different people. - Dogs getting stuck in their outdoor dog run door. - Getting flung to the top of the ceiling when closing a cage door. - Trying to move furniture and not being able to place it, meaning you have to relaunch your entire save. - A lot of CO-OP crashes. There's more, but you get the idea at this point. I love the experience, and when this game gets all the polish it needs, it'll be even better. I really hope they add other species in the future, like small mammals, reptiles, etc. I also hope they add adopters coming in with their own leashes sometimes, and actually make cabinets and such have usable storage. I definitely think this is an upgrade compared to the first, and I do recommend it. With that said, if bugs bother you, maybe wait for a few weeks until they clear up some of the glitches.

Bearing in mind that the game was only released five days ago, I am giving it a thumbs up, but ONLY because I assume the devs are working hard on bugfixes and patches and the like because holy CRAP this game is buggy right now. I was a big fan of the first Animal Shelter and was kind of disappointed that the devs decided to do a sequel rather than upgrading the original. But now that I've played AS2, I see why. They've added a world map, and locations, and animal breeds (!), and seasons, and the passage of time, and real human models to come in and adopt animals or clean the shelter... SO many things that, on paper, are improvements. They also removed some of the tedious things from the first game, like having to take and scan photographs or carry individual poop bags or buy pills in single quantities. But on the other hand, there are a lot of things noticeably missing from the first game as well. Almost all the items in the game are cosmetic only. No functional cabinets or storage bins -- the only benefit any single item has is if you can place something on its surface. Pets don't use doghouses or dog beds and, in fact, putting them in their cages just has a tendency to cause them to get stuck to the point that I had to remove them. There are no injuries or bandages or x-rays, or even ticks -- the clinic, at this moment, is greatly lacking. The interactions with adopters is a nice feature, except every single interaction is identical, and the traits and likes/dislikes make little sense, so finding matches can be really tedious. This is especially true when it's a person who just dropped by looking to see a pet -- they will leave before you actually can find one that's a good match. And then there are the BUGS. UGH!! Some are just visual or cosmetic, such as employees who change skin tones daily. Others can be game breaking, such as having three employees getting stuck in the entrance of the same dog cage and just standing there, getting paid, until their miraculously vanish when the game decided their time clock ran out and the rest of the shelter is on fire because it required their help to function! Pets are constantly getting stuck, and therefore not eating or drinking, or the levitate or walk on top of each other. Toys get stuck forever in walls. Items will mysteriously flip over, rotate, or be otherwise janky upon loading the game. And those are just the ones I've experienced -- other players are reporting some much worse bugs, especially in co-op. But I stress that the game just came out five days ago, and I disagree with some people that say it shouldn't have launched yet (which is why I am ultimately recommending.) I do admit it still feels like an early access game that just barely crossed the line into "finished" territory. I will also be extremely annoyed if some of the features I've mentioned are hidden in paid DLC rather than provided as free updates, because I can forgive the bare-bones launch IF the devs intend to work on things moving forward. Overall, I expect I am going to enjoy this game a lot. However, after several lengthy and somewhat frustrating play sessions, I think I'm going to have to put it back in the library for awhile until we see some bug fixes and updates.
