Another World proves that great storytelling doesn't need long conversations or endless cutscenes. After a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong, you're thrown into a mysterious alien world where everything is trying to kill you. The game tells its story almost entirely through animation, atmosphere, and environmental design, making every discovery feel meaningful. ⚡🛸 The cinematic presentation was years ahead of its time. Smooth animations, minimalist visuals, and almost no dialogue create an unforgettable experience that still feels unique today. Every screen is carefully designed to make you feel isolated and vulnerable. 🎬 The puzzles and platforming require observation and patience, while the action sequences create genuine tension. Escaping danger with only quick thinking and perfect timing is incredibly satisfying. 🧩🏃 Some checkpoints are unforgiving, the controls feel dated, and you'll probably die many times while learning the correct solution. But that's part of the game's classic design and charm. 💀 I expected a retro platformer... instead I found one of the most influential cinematic adventures ever made. 👏✨ Sometimes the oldest games tell the best stories. ❤️

The game that created the cinematique platformer genre, or at least popularized it. Another World (or Out of this world in USA), is just one incredible experiment that was unrivaled back then. You play as Lester, a scientist who portals himself to an alien world. The game is exploring and escaping from all the hazards and enemies that get in your way, while trying to understand the alien technology. The visuals are painted vectors, giving a very unique atmosphere in an age where everything was pixel art. In the sound department, there's small synth cues but is general silent except for the plenty of sound effects. Apart from running and jumping, you quickly gain a laser gun which is crucial not only for combat, but to solve different puzzles and even breaking doors and walls down. There are a couple of sections that require lots of setup in different screens, like shutting down a power line in a room, then destroy a wall and escape from a water flood, etc. Most are fair, except for one late part where you need to destroy a non descript floor with a very unorthodox method. There's no tutorials nor any HUD at all, you just spawn in the alien world and need to figure stuff out. This was also a great mechanic choice, unheard at the time. Other future games that cemented this genre are Flashback and Heart of Darkness. Talking about this remaster, it's one of those where you can switch between newer and older graphics on the run. It removes a little pixelation and adds better lightning and more shaded colors. It's not a big change, but it's ok for modern audiences. The game is very short, with generous checkpoints you can beat it (with all the achievements) in under an hour. Still, this is the best way to play this classic. It's a shame that the obscure sequel, Heart of the Alien, for Sega CD has never been rereleased.

Another World is a truly captivating game with a unique art style and atmosphere laced with a feeling of isolation and unease. It is beautifully animated using rotoscoping technique, similar to the Prince of Persia games. The game really doesn't hold your hand at all, and checking the controls in the 20th anniversary version or a manual for older versions is a must so you don't skip crucial parts on how to control your character. It still holds up well to this day, and the whole game feels a little bit like a somewhat surreal piece of art with its pacing and all the little details. I really enjoyed solving the puzzles and exploring the world, and while some of them are tough, Another World doesn't suffer from the infamous "moon logic" some of the older games are known for. From what I know, the 20th Anniversary version also has more checkpoints and an automatic save system, making the experience more streamlined and (somewhat) less frustrating than the originals. But don't worry, you will still die a lot. The combat can be a bit tough, but there is logic to it. Once you figure it out, you should feel quite confident. Also the enemies sometimes utilize some of the techniques (like sticking just your gun through a shield ) that you can also use to gain an advantage. So pay attention ;) As for the 20th Anniversary Edition specifically, I personally prefer the original looks and sound - which it does let you select in the options. Another World's visual style is just too unique and captivating to me, so switching to the "remastered" version doesn't feel quite right. But it does try to stick to the original style, and mostly does decent job of it. I just prefer the raw original look, is all. You also get the original Amiga ROM as an extra with both Steam and GOG versions, OST, and some "making of" materials. The GOG version also includes the 15th Anniversary remaster as an extra, but based on what I've seen, it looks less faithful to the original than the 20th Anniversary edition.

The classic PC game from the chipped stone era of gaming is here, LOL. It runs alright and both the remastered graphics as the soundtrack adds a nice flavor to the experience. The gameplay feels a bit clunky when played nowadays but that's exactly how it was back in the day. If you've never tried it before, just test yourself to make as far as you can without checking any online walkthroughs, like we did in the old days, only resort to them if you get really stuck. Enjoy.

my dad bought this game on the switch years ago but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nintendo removed it for some reason so we lost at least 15 dollars. anyways i have lots of good memories from that game and playing it again was really fun, especially dying constantly in the same stupid ways. Its a great game where lack of attention is what costs you most and you learn from your mistakes, and the odd vibe is still something that draws me in everytime i look at it.
