I picked this for the romance aspect, but it's the sports story that hooked me. The downside being that I mostly just glossed over the romance aspects of the story to get to the sports bits. This is high praise tho, because I usually don't care for sports stories. A criticism I have is that the Main Girl route is so strong, it makes the other routes pale in comparison. One route in particular was a SLOG to go through. Main Girl roue is also shows the most consistent personality and behaviors of the cast. In the other routes, it feels like the MC and even some of the other characters have dramatic personality shifts that felt rushed or out of character. I recommend people finish the other routes and save the Main Girl for last because you might drop the other routes for not living up to the level of quality.

A sports drama disguised as a moege, Aokana succeeds as a story by focusing on the former and using elements from the latter sparingly. The story takes you into the world of flying circus (FC), a fictional sport in which two competitors use anti-gravity shoes to fly and face off in an aerial duel. They score points from either beating the other person to a buoy placed at the corners of the arena or tagging their opponent on the back during a dogfight. The sport is surprisingly well-thought out for a fictional one; as a new-ish (~20-year-old) sport, FC's ruleset frequently changes, and the story even explains why some rules are as they are. For example, players can only score by touching their opponents back because otherwise combat would devolve into both players staying in place and trading blows despite the intended focus of FC being the flying. Masaya, the protagonist, is a former youth FC superstar, who left the sport a few years prior to the story after being discouraged by losing to perceived weaker opponents. His former mentor—now homeroom teacher—suggests that he coaches, not plays, for his school's FC club, and, although he takes much convincing, he eventually agrees. After a common route that sees him bonding with the members of the FC club, coaching them to prepare for the regional summer tournament, and participating in said tournament, the story diverges into four routes based on whom Masaya decides to focus his coaching on for the fall tournament. He can choose Asuka, a newcomer who is a fast learner and has a good mind for FC; Mashiro, a newbie who hasn't quite gotten the hang of FC yet; Rika, a girl from another school and Masaya's next-door neighbor, who has talent for FC but a rigid way of thinking about it; or Misaki, a player with some previous FC experience that has a higher starting skill level but takes longer to improve. Despite popular opinion seeming to be that Misaki definitively has the best route, I actually found all four routes (which I played in the order the story presents them: Asuka, Mashiro, Rika, Misaki) to be of relatively equal quality. I previously said that Aokana much more of a sports story than a moege, and Asuka's route exemplifies this the most. A significant portion of her route comprises training sessions between her and the other members of the FC club, as well as research into the winner of the summer tournament, whom Asuka wants to defeat during the fall tournament. There are light romance and moege elements, some of which were the exact type I groan at any time I see them: characters having one shtick that they incessantly repeat, accidental (and intentional) sexual harassment taken as a joke, and ridiculously unrealistic misunderstandings as a source of humor, as well as frustrating H-scene tropes like bleeding during defloration, "it's hitting my womb," and "my hips are moving on their own." Although I ultimately thought they were generally better executed and fortunately used more sparingly than in other romance-focused/moege visual novels I've read (e.g., Farther Than The Blue Sky, Riddle Joker), what really kept me engaged during Asuka's route was the FC practice and the exciting climax during the fall tournament. It's close with Misaki's route, but at the end of the day, I think I'd say Asuka's route is my favorite in Aokana. Both Mashiro and Rika's routes are more like character studies on the aforementioned heroines through the lens of FC than stories about FC itself. Mashiro's route is the most romance-focused of the four, and again, although romance stories are not usually my thing, I actually quite enjoyed how it was executed here. However, of these two less FC-centric routes, I enjoyed Rika's route more. It focuses on her breaking out of her shell and becoming more open-minded and outgoing; her dignified-yet-rigid personality during her interpersonal reactions is compared to her dignified-yet-rigid playstyle during her FC matches, and Masaya helps her break out of her shell in the former through their boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, and in the latter through their coach-student relationship. Misaki's route was my capstone for my time with Aokana. I enjoyed how her route focused not just on her, but also on Masaya, about whom surprisingly little is revealed during the other routes. The writing compares Misaki and Masaya, using their shared frustrations over losing to highlight and explore their trauma. However, a series of scenes near the end of Misaki's route soured my opinion of it. Right before the fall tournament, the climax of the route, the pacing comes to a dramatic halt to feature two back-to-back H-scenes, with an overlong dialogue between Masaya and Misaki sandwiched in between them. I spent nearly 20 minutes waiting for the fade to black and subsequent fade-in to the fall tournament, only to audibly groan when I noticed the writing leading into yet another H-scene. All of the other heroine routes had only two H-scenes each, while Misaki had twice the amount, and I think her route suffered for it. Overall, while Aokana includes some romance and moege tropes that are not to my taste, it thankfully includes them in small amounts and executes them better than other moeges I've read. And really, the meat of the story and what truly kept me engaged throughout its runtime were the excellently written, exciting, and suspenseful flying circus practice sessions, matches, and tournaments. 8/10
