Okay... These arcade games ARE old, but they shaped the landscape of modern gaming in ways you can't even imagine. These machines ate more quarters than a hot slot straight out of Las Vegas, and with good reason. For their time, they were revolutionary, and should be experienced in my opinion. Try for yourself, and you judge...

Seems to be a relatively nice collection filled mostly with Konami's shooting games. Sure, Gradius Origns exist if you're there only for Gradius games, however for it's cheap price tag it's a neat one to own, I'll probably go for occasional Gradius runs in this one every once in a while. Also, another downside i can think of for this collection is that there are no additional ports packed in. Would be pretty funny if they packed this one with every single port of Gradius, which has been ported to every single device back then and probably can run on anything that has screen, dpad and 2 buttons. Why Konami did go as far as putting Gradius on MSX? Don't ask me, i did not asked Konami either.

Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection is Konami’s attempt to preserve and celebrate a formative era of its arcade history, gathering eight of its early coin-operated titles into a single package for modern players. Rather than reimagining or expanding upon these games, the collection aims to present them as faithfully as possible, acting as a digital time capsule for an age when quarter-munching shooters dominated the floors of arcades. This intention shapes the entire experience. From the moment you launch the collection, it becomes clear that this is not a reinvention but a reflection — a curated window into Konami’s past, enhanced only with a handful of contemporary conveniences. The centerpiece of the collection is its strong lineup of shoot-’em-ups, which represents the bulk of what Konami built its arcade reputation on. Gradius (released here in its “Nemesis” branding), Gradius II (appearing as “Vulcan Venture”), Life Force, Thunder Cross, and TwinBee all stand out as influential titles that helped define the evolution of the shmup genre. Their weapon systems, enemy waves, level design, and escalating patterns still feel tight and engaging decades later. Nostalgia aside, they remain mechanically satisfying: whether you’re weaving through bullet patterns, stacking power-ups, or mastering level flow, these games still showcase the elegant simplicity and challenge that made 1980s shooters iconic. The collection preserves their original pacing, difficulty, and audiovisual character, maintaining the feeling of stepping up to an arcade cabinet — minus the cost of losing one credit after another. Konami supplements these classics with a few less well-remembered entries, including Scramble, Thunder Cross, and Haunted Castle — the latter being a rare arcade offshoot of the Castlevania universe. While these additions diversify the historical footprint of the package, they also highlight the unevenness of the selection. Haunted Castle, in particular, has gained notoriety for its stiff platforming, harsh difficulty, and awkward controls, offering more frustration than entertainment for many players. Yet even these rougher titles contribute to the collection’s underlying mission: to document a slice of Konami’s arcade lineage, both the highs and the misfires, providing players with a sense of how the company experimented long before it became synonymous with larger franchises. Modern features help soften the experience, even if they’re understated. Save states allow players to practice difficult segments without losing extensive progress, and adjustable difficulty options introduce accessibility that the original cabinets never afforded. Display configurations let players tweak screen format or apply light visual filters, making the games more comfortable on modern hardware. Perhaps the most unexpected inclusion is the digital bonus book, which offers concept art, historical notes, and early design insights. While not expansive, it adds a sense of context, reminding players that these titles were crafted during a rapidly evolving period of arcade innovation. Despite these strengths, the collection’s shortcomings are hard to overlook. The user interface is bare and functional, lacking the polish and presentation flair that might have elevated the package beyond a simple emulator wrapper. There is also very little variety outside the shmup genre; with seven of the eight games being shooters, the compilation feels narrow in its representation of Konami’s broader arcade catalog. For players seeking a wider sampling — beat ’em ups, puzzle games, racing titles, or other classics — the selection may feel incomplete. The timeless difficulty of these arcade experiences can also pose a barrier. Even with save states, the relentless enemy patterns and unforgiving design may feel punishing to modern players accustomed to more forgiving structures. Still, the value of Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection lies in its authenticity. It preserves a set of foundational games with care, clarity, and respect for their original form. It invites players to revisit or discover the roots of Konami’s mechanical ingenuity — roots that would eventually give rise to beloved franchises and genre staples. As a historical snapshot, it succeeds, offering a compact but meaningful archive of arcade milestones. As a gaming package, it caters most strongly to enthusiasts of retro shooters, fans of Konami’s legacy, and anyone who appreciates vintage design uncompromised by modern reinterpretation. It may not be comprehensive, but it delivers exactly what it promises: a faithful tribute to an era defined by flashing screens, booming cabinets, and the thrill of chasing high scores one coin at a time. I'm not really much of a shooter fan, so this collection was always going to be a bit lost on me, but I do enjoy video game history, and in that sense I'm grateful that this collection exists. I obtained all of the achievements, but I'll be the first to tell you that it wasn't through natural play. I honestly don't know who might be capable of accomplishing such a feat without using the save state feature, but the mere thought of the existence of that hypothetical person legitimately terrifies me. Some of this design is absolutely nefarious and unfair; particularly when it comes to Thunder Cross. That said, my recommendation is predicated on you being the kind of person who appreciates both gaming history and shooters...even if they're of the old-school quarter-munching variety. If neither of these things appeal to you then I would suggest you stay far, far away.
