Osome and Microids decided to "Romaster" the first Asterix and Obelix XXL after doing that with the sequel first, but was it worth it? The most distinct new feature is the ability to switch between the updated graphics and sound, and the original in its 4:3 aspect ratio, in an incredibly quick and seamless way. The developers must have felt very proud of this, to the point that at least one of the challenges I tried so far, tasks the player to collect tokens and some can be taken only in retro mode! I also noticed that when using objects, I needed to just press the action button once, rather than holding it. It's small but very convenient. Combos have been simplified compared to the original. No matter how good the remastering is, the biggest issues lie in the original. The basic gameplay loop is quite fun, and for once in the Asterix universe the Romans feel like a credible threat while staying cartoony, but there is not much variety. The nicer graphics can't cover how barren several environments are, not taking any advantage of the locations of the franchise, the story tours many parts of the Roman Empire and yet it doesn't even take the chance to have characters from those places cameos. And crates, by Toutatis, so many crates. This may be the game with the biggest number of crates ever, and I'm not joking. Whenever there is an empty space, crates full of helmets to collect are there, and as you need lots of helmets to buy upgrades, you need to break as many crates as possible. You will spend more time smashing them than doing anything else during the game, which can be classified as a "collectathon". In later levels combos will become essential to wiping out dozens upon dozens of legionaries. However, most of them are so useless, it's more convenient to go with the basic moves and save on helmets until you can get the tornado early in Helvetia (and an upgrade later in Egypt), which clears house. That is due to a very basic "trick": there are never more than 20 or so enemies on screen, reinforcements are automatically spawned off-camera, and so they are caught in the tornado right as they enter. "No matter how good", I said, because this is also an unpolished remaster to what was already an unpolished game. I had to redo the first section of Normandy because after transporting Asterix with the suspended cart thing using Obelix, it didn't switch back to him as it as it should and I was left unable to progress. Another time a dialogue not playing after an interaction blocked me, luckily right after a savepoint. Music can interrupt suddenly at times. I've read reports of glitches from other players, and according to some with better memory of the original, the retro mode loses some details, like a cool widening of the FOV when the tornado is used. So why still a thumbs up? Well, beside the usual lack of nuance of Steam's rating system (so this would be more of an horizontal thumb than a vertical one), there is still fun to be had here, better avoiding long sessions though. Back when the original was released, the potential was noticeable, the developers had the right ideas, but they needed to build a better game around those - which they did with XXL 2.

Asterix & Obelix XXL is a nostalgic beat 'em up game with a nice soundtrack and fun levels! Nothing much to say about this, it's a nostalgic remaster of the old game with some improvements here and there. It's just as i remember and i loved every second of it! I have also ONLY played in the old version not the remastered version so i can't say anything about that.

Love the Asterix & Obelix series. The game is simple and straightforward, more like a game for kids. It shows its age, but its really funny and enjoyable, and it will throw you back in time. You wont find any modern gameplay or deep mechanics and amazing graphics but if you like Asterix & Obelix series and its on sale for a few euros, asolutely go for it!

Asterix and Obelix XXL . Funny, dynamic game it was very fun to play in it when I was 10. You should play only in old graphics mode, because animation and camera unchanged and very outdated. It so cool that helmets are sparkle! Old graphics mode looks much better than remaster. In remaster the colors of the surroundings do not go well with each other. Nice music . Controls: WASD Space to Jump Attack E Catch R Dash F Throw Q Send in Dogmatix X Arrows to look in different directions Tab for change rendet (old/remaster) . Mechanics and features: Beautiful collection of helmets with a pleasant sound. Cool animation of beating meat out of boars. Broke chest, helmets here. Live bar looks like shields. You can spin your enemies and throw them Double jump Push granite blocks You can see route for granite blocks on ground. Touch can blow up barrels. Punch druid to save your progress.

A classic, pretty good remaster, I very much enjoy the new soundtrack. The ability to change between new and old is also such a good decision. The new type of asterix and obelix games will never reach this level of good. (not the way they're going)
