Great fast little game- playtime includes several hours of wandering away between cases. Admittedly it has a very specific approach- you're in the overlap of enjoying casual history, games that play with what a game can be, and everyone getting a theme song, you might also dig it!

This historical visual novel is a joy! The writing is ridiculously good; so witty and sophisticated. The research - it is set in Shakespeare's London - and the voice acting are also top-drawer, not to mention the hilarious choral songs. You play as Simon Forman, an astrologer-quack who does 'readings' for a fascinating cast of characters. The way the storytelling is wrapped around this main narrative mechanic is very clever. The choices you make, based on the readings you give, profoundly effect the lives of Forman's patients, for both good and ill (depending on your choices). A gem of a narrative game.

What delights my about Astrologaster is statement it makes about astrology as a whole. You are simulating someone who believes very deeply in the power of astrology, and when you come to terms with it as a player it's mostly hogwash. In fact, "Doctor" Forman often just uses the latest tidbit of information he's discovered from his previous conversations to provide insightful "readings" into the future of others. To boot, he somehow squeezes his way into bedding any female he can. Often manipulating them through his authority. What a piece of work Simon Forman was, and what an absolutely gorgeous piece of art Astrologaster is to capture him.

so sillyfun! i found myself wikipedia-ing a lot of the real life people in this game while i was playing and i feel like my brain has gotten nice and full with tudor period aristocracy facts. really interesting characters and great witty music in this one! big humphrey bell fan hehehe
