Honestly? After just playing a game that normally costs 15, on sale for 6 that had a 2-3 hour runtime, this game blows that one out of the water at the exact same price/discount point. Mind-blowing in comparison and I have a bias because of it. This game is substantial and worth so much more, not only in terms of an overall experience, but definitely worth your time as well. Fun and breezy, easy and cheesy. Has some legitimate laugh out loud jokes and some legitimate hard pass cringe moments, but altogether, a ton of heart and though derivative, it has a voice it's own and a unique style. The voice acting is also top notch when compared to others at this budget price point as well. Ultimately price means nothing but I'm using it as an example and to emphasize how often the hierarchy of games is cataloged in such a way, A, AA, AAA and so forth and to say that this game is very undervalued currently. Backfirewall is a niche sort of thing but not so much so to be alienating and I think casual gamists and redditors alike will rejoice with this game and it is easily a 30-45 dollar value haha. 6.75/10

A quirky exploration/minor-puzzler in a virtual environment. Pros: * Pretty environment. * An amusingly narcissistic "buddy" you quickly learn to love to hate. * Lots of NPCs w/ distinct personalities. * Decent plot twists about 1/2-way through, and near the end. Cons: * Kiss goodbye to the idea of getting even "most" of the achievements in a single run, w/o a walkthrough. * Likewise, no "chapter select", to re-do levels you missed stuff on. TL;DR: If you either aren't obsessed with 100%'ing an exploration game, or have loads of spare time, 9/10; else, skip.

I've thus far gone through 2 playthroughs of this game and I've generally enjoyed my time. However, before I get into the highlights I will say: For as many peaks as this game has, it also has valleys. For one, this game runs on an autosave, and a pretty damn tight one at that. Considering that once you leave an area it's gone for good this becomes incredibly annoying if you're trying to go for certain achievements. Not to mention how easy it is to lock yourself out of some. As I'm typing this, I just tried to get the best ending achievement but couldn't because I backed out of a dialogue tree about mid-way through the game and it locked me out of starting it up again. And this was an action I didn't know would lock me out of the best ending (though I also put part of the blame on the guide I was using not signposting that clear enough). I also have to mention that movement always felt a little wonky, as I would often slip off platforms if I stood just a little too close to the edge. So, if you're someone that needs to comb through all achievements or dislikes a slower more walking-sim type game, then this isn't gonna be for you. That being said, I do still adore this game. It's funny and charming with a storyline that will keep you hooked with existential quandaries. I didn't find any real difficulty with the puzzles, but that may be a YMMV type thing. Environments are nice too look at, taking the idea of what it'd be like to live in a phone without making everything look too sterile or too much like our own world. The characters were also a delight, with special mention to your VO companion; OS9. Its voice actor did an amazing job giving the character so much life; what with OS9 being frequently snarky, generally avoiding any uncomfortable topics, and desperately needing a pair of glasses but ultimately is scared of its demise and grows to care for the player character. Believe me, there was a reason I was hooked on an almost 8 hour straight play session when I started up this game for the first time. I certainly recommend Backfirewall_ as an experience, as it's a game I don't think could easily be replicated.

Had the game on my radar for some time and finally played it. I liked the game and overall story and characters. And generally, I will still recommend the game. There is a lot of fun stuff to get from this. Some fun jokes and stuff but.. BIG BUT.. be warned! There is no free roam post-game, no chapter selection, and no manual saving. Noting. And quite a lot of missable stuff. Also, there is no skip option for cutscenes and stuff.. so replayability is kinda not there and not fun at all. Which is quite sad. I would love to replay the game and make some different choices and find more secrets. Also, it seems like the devs behind the game don't really do updates on the game. The game is very polished but I did encounter some really annoying bugs in the endgame. To conclude this: The game is fun for a one-time experience. No replayability. 8-10 hours for a full playthrough. And I want to add that I thought that there were some weird choices for the story sometimes. Stuff that just leaves me a bit in confusion and maybe even sadness. I feel like this game is an almost polished gem that got abandoned in the last 10%.

Good game. Not amazing, but enjoyable with a decent runtime (5-6 hours). "Tragicomic" is a good description for the mood, which balances meta-humor and snark with impending existential doom. Game also gets a cookie because I only broke out of the map once in the course of normal play, and a well-developed autosave/checkpoint system meant recovery was smooth. Bravo, devs. Two technical quibbles: -This game takes up nearly 35 GB of harddrive space, I'm not sure why. -There was one level (The Art Gallery) with very bad graphics stutter (AMD Ryzen 5900X, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080), but the rest of the game was fine. Not sure what was happening there.
