Shortest game to ever make me cry. Fun but gut-punching, art is beautiful and even the way it uses its' colors is simple, effective, and meaningful. There's an achievement for resetting your save file after beating the game, and you'll know this game got to you when simply deleting progress in a video game can hurt you emotionally.
This is a really cute game, I admit, to play in between other titles. The art is absolutely adorable and everything, including the music, has been done by one person. There’s quite a bit of bad ends to collect (I mean, look at the title) in many different ways. I believe there’s over 40 bad endings in total so it’s fine. It’ll keep the player busy. The character designs are simple enough, and the designs are enough to be distinct from each other – along with the art direction taken. Honestly, if you like the characters enough, the fanart would be easier to draw all things considered. The music is fun and catchy but they will be repetitive due to the volume of endings to get through and collect. It’s not annoying, and I find it charming enough. It’s distinct enough to carry the mood over through the endings and the stories to go through. I like that there’s a skip button so if you want to simply collect endings without reading the same things over and over, then that option is there. Believe me, it will get repetitive. However, if that’s what you want, then you can take your time and enjoy reading it. It’s up to you. There is one singular song but it plays at the end credits and it is great. And I like it a lot too! For a final song, it’s not a bad one to choose. One thing that I do like about this game too is that there’s a flowchart to keep track of which ending (or even dead ends) that you’ve already collected. It certainly makes things a lot easier to keep track of and makes it easier to see where you need to go or what decision you need to make next to get to that ending. And what makes it great is that it’s individualized per character. It’s such a small thing but it’s a world of difference when you’re trying to collect as many endings as possible. As far as the characters go, I do wish that there was more actual development with one character compared to the rest of the cast. It’s a bit frustrating because the focus is on two of them, and the other’s characterization is more incidental than what I almost thought to be intentional. I wish there were more hints about that character’s desire outside their “role”. That isn’t to say that I didn’t like that character but I wish there was more oomph to it which I thought would have tied the point of the game better. In my opinion, at least, it could have at least tied the themes together better, especially with the true ending. However, I do understand that the gimmick, so to speak, is to actively get bad endings. I guess all I’m saying is that I wish there was more intention in the characterization of the characters to drive the ending sequence a bit more impactful. Ultimately, as always, I’m overthinking this. This is the sort of game, like I mentioned earlier, that you’d have a better time playing in between others. This even feels more of a cozy game than a true visual novel because of my nitpicking and my general attitude towards it. I say this because you can completely reset the entire thing at the end and do it all over again. Not a bad thing by any means, of course, because it means you can put more hours into it and see the characters all over again. I’m just saying that if the game dev decides to do a cinematic universe with their works, and this, or even do a remaster with more of a focus on story – I’ll be there. I really want to get Maiden’s plushie… Next time, I won’t miss out. I definitely recommend this game otherwise, especially if you’re a first time visual novel player!
Truly amazing. Although short, BAD END THEATER manages to deliver an emotional and heartwarming story within the span of 2 hours. With gorgeous art and music, I've been thinking about this game ever since I finished it and i cannot recommend it enough. A must buy experience. Overall: 10/10
