Look, it's a very old game. It's clunky and and the popcap is tiny compared to other rts. The UI and Icons are off in some places. And although the optics got some overhaul it's still dated. But man, what a joy to combine your workers into mighty warriors, canoniers and mages. Theres so much to do, you wish the popcap was even smaller. It's a very creative game and the storytelling in the campaign is awesome. Also lots of factionvariety and huge skirmish maps! And you can turn Men into Women by sending them to the bathhouse lol. So nice it got this Zen Edition Release on steam! I love remastered/ rereleased games I played back in the days, and although this might be rough around some edges, it's still very enjoyable on a modern system, especially when you played it back in the days. Worth every penny! Glad to see it's still receiving patches 08/10
When Command & Conquer and Warcraft 2 started the whole real-time strategy craze in the 90s, they kicked off a great big fad of everybody and their dog releasing RTS games until the mid-to-late 2000s. These games ranged in quality from things like Dark Reign , Age of Empires and KKND all the way down to the likes of 7th Legion and Dark Colony . Many of these games, such as War Wind and Earth 2140 , stuck REALLY close to the formula popularised by the big two (and established by their predecessors Dune 2 and Warcraft: Orcs & Humans ). But for every 10 games we got that felt very much like Command & Conquer or Warcraft 2 by another name, there were also one or two RTS games that really tried to meaningfully innovate on genre conventions . One of these games was Battle Realms, and while it never gathered the attention it deserved, it was (and still is) chock-full of fun and innovative ideas . And that’s really what makes Battle Realms Zen Edition worth a buy even today . Because in the intervening 25+ years, no other game I’m aware of has ever bothered trying to copy what Battle Realms did with unit production and resource management, let alone its little mechanical gameplay touches. It's also where Battle Realms Zen Edition shines even today, where other (admittedly excellent) RTS games like Tempest Rising merely try to emulate an established style. Battle Realms feels like it was developed with a simulationist design philosophy . Your units can walk as well as run, but running drains their stamina. If they’re injured, they’ll start limping slowly across the battlefield, making them easy targets. Even if they still have the stamina and health to run, it’s a bad idea to dash through forested areas, as this will startle birds in the trees, which will give away your position. Some units, like the Samurai, fluently switch from ranged to melee attacks, while purely ranged units become really vulnerable up close. Probably the most obvious way in which Battle Realms eschews the Command & Conquer / Warcraft 2 formula is in its resource management and unit production mechanics . Your resources are rice, water and horses. All of these are found directly on the map, and they have multiple uses and interactions . Rice fields need to be actively watered so they can regrow, but you also need water to put out burning buildings. Horses on the map can be tamed for use as mounts for your regular combat units or heroes; or you can give some of them to your workers so they can carry more resources. Meanwhile, the Wolf clan uses them as feed, which allows you to attach wolf units to any of your combat units instead. And last but not least, all of your combat units are created by training worker units in different buildings. If you train them in multiple buildings one after the other, they’ll turn into entirely new units. But make no mistake: Even high-tier units trained in multiple buildings have distinct weaknesses, while lowly tier-one foot soldiers retain their utility throughout the match . The Zen Edition, then, is a good way of experiencing this almost-forgotten classic . Mechanically, the Zen Edition works really well in my experience, though it does add some challenges/problems to the campaigns which I don’t think were part of the original game's design. While I didn’t have a problem playing through the three available campaigns on normal, the overall difficulty has definitely risen in ways that were never originally intended, and probably aren’t intended now either. There will be campaign missions in which your enemies throw more units at you much more quickly than they should be able to, for example. This means you’ll really have to embrace the aggressive playstyle Battle Realms has always favoured , trying to take your enemies down quickly before they can overwhelm you. I also don’t remember the AI playing quite as ‘optimised’ as it does in Zen Edition . Note how enemy melee units will ALWAYS run straight through your battle line of melee units to engage your ranged and support units instead. This makes ranged units and healers much less useful against AI opponents than I remember from the original build of Battle Realms. As far as I’m concerned, none of these problems really make the Zen Edition as unplayable as some people have claimed , but they do sometimes come off as needlessly frustrating deviations from the original Battle Realms . If you don’t like the changes made in Zen Edition, you can still purchase the original game build on GOG; but if you’re looking for the most hassle-free way of getting the game to run on modern machines (and playing online multiplayer), then Zen Edition is the way to go. Whichever way you choose, I think you should definitely try the game if you have any interest in real-time strategy games at all .
