So, after finally getting the final achievement, I'm more than ready to give my review for this game. If you're into FPS Roguelites, this one is a great pick! There are a lot of fun weapons to try out to find your favourites in, and same goes for abilities and Core Combinations! Of course, not every weapon is created equal so some are more commonly better than others, but I do recommend to give every weapon at least a bit of a shot. The main gimmick of the game is of course, the ability to recycle weapons or abilities and take the modifiers from them to slap them onto whatever gear you've currently got going, which allows for great customisation to tweak your gear to your liking! Again, some mods are better than others, but it's fun to try around and see what you can get up to. Enemy design is fine, since they're robots the designs are all just a little bit too samey in my opinion, especially between the regular grunts and the somewhat tougher grunts, but the big boys do stand out more between one another, so it's alright, I'll definitely give that a pass. One thing I would wish was in the game was some sort of Firing Range in the Hideout where you can try out different weapons, but it's fine enough to try them on the go. The music is cool, I especially love the music in the Gravity Gardens area of the game, and sound design overall is pretty good.

At first I wasn't sure if I should keep the game. At around the 2-hour mark, the game still didn't seem to differentiate itself much from Roboquest. So why would I need another one? Turned out I was wrong. Once the combat and maneuver skills kicked in, it's Mega Doom Eternal Man X on steroid. The active and passive skills synergize nicely and the ability to transfer weapon perks allows great freedom to experiment. The first-person platforming is all right. I'm not a big fan of that though. And the game doesn't clearly explain some of its mechanics. But, hey, it's an FPS with infinite ammo. You just shoot things till they stop moving. The game performs well on my RTX3060 laptop with 8GB RAM at 1080p. There are frame drops from time to time but it's perfectly playable. Using controller feels very natural (much like Doom Eternal). There's no head bobbing and you can set the FOV, so people with motion sickness should be fine. So, if you're interested but still not sure, just push through the slow start and you'll find a rock-solid roguelite FPS.

Overall a really excellently designed and executed game. If there's one misstep Battle Shapers makes it's that it what you start out with is kind of limited and straightforward. It's probably because I came in with a ton of roguelike, shooter, and even roguelike shooter experience, but at first Battle Shapers almost felt quaint and incomplete. Now, I was wrong about that but I didn't realize it until I had unlocked or discover a couple of mechanics that arguably the player should start with. It's worth giving the game a chance if initially it feels a bit underwhelming. The polished presentation, punchy combat, and challenge kept me interested. Before too long it clicked and I started unlocking more complex and rewarding elements to work with. I think based on the challenge level Battle Shapers is a bit too afraid of overwhelming the player. I could see someone assuming this game is more of a casual experience when I don't think it is. I think it's also worth mentioning that the writing might feel like it's going to be obnoxious based on some of the quipping the player character does. It might be for some, but I will say it never gets to the point where it feels forced or painfully unfunny. I think the game is just trying to lean into the 90s aesthetic and coming across like a Saturday morning cartoon from then is part of that occasionally. Also, as an aside the way the entirety of Battle Shapers feels like homage to the 16-bit era, and especially Megaman X is great, it really nails those sensibilities. I remember Y2K though, so I might be biased. Short version: It's good. It might start a little underwhelming especially for more experienced players, but I would recommend giving it a chance if you like the gameplay and presentation.

Fun FPS roguelike with a lot of inspiration on Megaman, down to the fact that you can absorb the powers from bosses and equip a different "suit" which gives you new skills. There are also metroidvania elements, where you unlock powers and in subsequent runs you use those powers to traverse new paths and find secrets. The game also strikes a good balance between vertical progression and horizontal progression. Vertical - literally more power: you can increase health, shields, add more affixes to weapons, increase their rarity, etc. Horizontal - new ways to play: new weapons, grenades, abilities, perks, etc. But be aware that the runs can be LONG (the first time I reached the last boss, it took me 1h30min) and it's not possible to just save freely and leave at any moment, only in key transition moments like between floors or after killing bosses. The interval between those save points aren't super far off though, I'd say it's between 12-18 minutes depending on how you play. Still a very good game thouhg, and very recommended if you're looking for a solid FPS experience.
