I have played a lot of Gunfire Reborn and Roboquest, both games I consider peak roguelite shooters and let me say, I have no idea why this is sitting on "mixed". I have a guess though. The first runs are very bare bones. You don't get another "class skill" until you killed a boss at least 2 times and the first class skill is a bit... boring. Yeah, I can understand why it is a bit dry in the beginning and it is a mistake by the devs to hide what makes this game great, behind 90 minutes of grind. But damn. Once you unlock the different class skills and unlockables, this game shines. Yeah, the look is a bit overused, music is meh, world building is almost non-existent (I mean text boxes mid combat in a shooter? Cmon) Sadly there is no coop, some areas make you lose a few frames. And common enemies can get a tiny bit repetitive. But the ways you can customize your run is insane. You basically have a system in which you take one of the 4 classes as primary, and the other as secondary. The primary class decides the core kit (melee attack, dash and main ability) and perks, but the secondary class opens their own perk pool to choose from, so you can combine and experiment with a lot of stuff. And every class feels incredible once you get the hang of it. But what really sealed the deal for me was how weapon upgrades work. You will find a lot of them and every weapon has a randomized perk (i.e. bonus projectiles, crit, rockets), and most you won't take with you, but you can extract their perk and add it to your weapon. So over time, you build your personal perfect weapon. But oh no, you find a legendary weapon that you would love to take with you? Don't fret, because these perks that you collected over time? They are assigned to the weapon slot, not the weapon itself, allowing for an easy swap even far into the run. I was sceptical. But after a few runs and once I got the hang of the classes, this is one of those games that make you feel like you are in a montage, adrenaline and dopamine en masse. Insane combat flow, fun upgrades and lots of stuff you can experiment with. Put on your own music and just enjoy it.

Battle Shapers, simply put, is a lot of fun. It has all the fun of a roguelike-expressing skill, trying to build overpowered combinations-combined with the thrill of a movement shooter, to blast tons of robots into smithereens. The game can also be fairly funny at times, when it wants to be, with its characters in small roles, but not at the expense of the gameplay. The core loop is fun, simply put. There's a good variety in enemies, the bosses are well designed (no one-trick gimmicks! Learn everything or suffer the consequences), and there's not much else to say. It's a shame this game didn't get a bigger budget, as well as a bigger reception; I'm eagerly looking forward to a sequel that will expand in scope!

So, after finally getting the final achievement, I'm more than ready to give my review for this game. If you're into FPS Roguelites, this one is a great pick! There are a lot of fun weapons to try out to find your favourites in, and same goes for abilities and Core Combinations! Of course, not every weapon is created equal so some are more commonly better than others, but I do recommend to give every weapon at least a bit of a shot. The main gimmick of the game is of course, the ability to recycle weapons or abilities and take the modifiers from them to slap them onto whatever gear you've currently got going, which allows for great customisation to tweak your gear to your liking! Again, some mods are better than others, but it's fun to try around and see what you can get up to. Enemy design is fine, since they're robots the designs are all just a little bit too samey in my opinion, especially between the regular grunts and the somewhat tougher grunts, but the big boys do stand out more between one another, so it's alright, I'll definitely give that a pass. One thing I would wish was in the game was some sort of Firing Range in the Hideout where you can try out different weapons, but it's fine enough to try them on the go. The music is cool, I especially love the music in the Gravity Gardens area of the game, and sound design overall is pretty good.

At first I wasn't sure if I should keep the game. At around the 2-hour mark, the game still didn't seem to differentiate itself much from Roboquest. So why would I need another one? Turned out I was wrong. Once the combat and maneuver skills kicked in, it's Mega Doom Eternal Man X on steroid. The active and passive skills synergize nicely and the ability to transfer weapon perks allows great freedom to experiment. The first-person platforming is all right. I'm not a big fan of that though. And the game doesn't clearly explain some of its mechanics. But, hey, it's an FPS with infinite ammo. You just shoot things till they stop moving. The game performs well on my RTX3060 laptop with 8GB RAM at 1080p. There are frame drops from time to time but it's perfectly playable. Using controller feels very natural (much like Doom Eternal). There's no head bobbing and you can set the FOV, so people with motion sickness should be fine. So, if you're interested but still not sure, just push through the slow start and you'll find a rock-solid roguelite FPS.

Do you love roguelites? Do you love the newer Doom series? Did you love Quake 3 Arena or Rise of the Triad? If you answered yes to any of those questions, get this game now! Runs at maximum settings smoothly and fast on GFN. So if you own a Mac or a non-Windows computer or device, you're good to jump in. Thank you, Dev!
