I see a lot of reviewers complaining that this is not Void Bastards. Well, it is definitely not. First and foremost—this is not an immersive-sim roguelite. This is an FPS roguelite (with lite RPG elements). Comparing it to Void Bastards is wrong because, despite having the same devs and similar visual style and premise, the core of the game is totally different, and the gameplay is something else completely. Is Wild Bastards a good roguelite FPS? It is interesting for sure, but sometimes I have a feeling that the game is a bit undercooked or unbalanced, and some systems don't feel well thought-out or polished: 1) Encounters with enemies feel more like a chore than exciting showdowns. A lot of enemies are hiding or even using invisibility, and sometimes you see an opponent only after getting hit. The game feels more like a stealth shooter, where giving out your position usually comes with punishment, like half of the map going into blind rage and attacking the player. With little TTK and high damage, this is not a very fun experience. 2) Shooting itself feels hollow and impactless. Everybody got used to gunplay being weak in immersive sims because those games have a good amount of other cool stuff. But Wild Bastards is FPS, and the gunplay from Void Bastards is not enough here, sorry. 3) You have 13 characters, but the game never really gives incentives for players to try everyone. I played 20 hours and beat the campaign on hard, but did it mostly with half of the roster; two characters I played only once, and one character (Rawhide) I haven't even played a single time. You can say it's the player's choice to try different things or stick to the same old, but you actually upgrade characters with mods and skills, so trying someone new without upgrades is giving yourself a disadvantage. 4) Balance. I don't expect ideal balance with 13 characters, but some of them are just OP. Smoky and Casino have ultimates that just kill enemies on the map without even needing to see them; that makes them much stronger than everyone else. Sarge spots and highlights enemies, which is crazily effective in a game where every opponent tries to hide and be sneaky. There are other issues too, but you get the idea. All complaints aside, the game is fun, and I beat it on hard in 20 hours without getting bored. Frustrated? Yeah, sometimes. Not because the game is hard (I failed sector only two times), but because Wild Bastards just shows its rough edges and lack of gameplay polish. And when I say lack of polish, I mean game design and idea implementation. Optimization is good in this game, and there are no bugs, so in the technical aspect, Wild Bastards is actually perfect. I recommend Wild Bastards; it is fun and tries something different and exciting, but some things here needed more time to cook.

Good Game But Somehow Shallow The game forces you to play almost all characters regularly and combine them, although this combinations wheren't that usefull in my playthrough. The gunpay is fun for almost all characters, specially for the initial and best designed ones, although getting in cover or dodging attacks is a dodgy buisness, meaning that on harder difficulties you can get easily overrun or killed by Mc Neil or his relatives. Music and level design are pretty good, and to top it off characters dialogues and voices are really on point. The gameplay lookp can feel repetitive, maybe due to the lack of customization or new gameplay changing skills, meaning you will spend the last 3 hours doing kinda the same, the roguelite aspect of the game is one i havent tried for this same reason, a repetitive loop that is just overturned by equipments that are removed on each sector jump. Play if you like the aesthetic, but probably get on discount.

Wild Bastards is great if you're looking for some quick FPS action with interesting abilities and a variety of scenarios. The player will move around on a world map and engage in battles or interact with POIs from there; so It's not just one long FPS. In a sense that makes it the perfect "quick gaming break" option. Once you've figured out the mechanics and gotten past the learning curve, it will reward both tactical cleverness and guns-blazing-bravado. I agree with those who said dialogue and voice acting is just...hilarious and fantastic. Art style and assets are really really neat and refreshing as well. If you haven't played Void Bastards, I think it's worth playing this first, because although they share similarities, I think this one may have broader appeal and slightly more engaging play-style!

PREAMBLE: For starters; I am a huge fan of this studio's previous title, Void Bastards, and have played it through several times. Wild Bastards share a lot of DNA with it's elder sibling, but where Void Bastards focused on the importance of stealth and being a diligent scavenger, Wild Bastards lean in another direction. Wild Bastards is much more direct action oriented game, rewarding charging into the fray - this was an aspect I often tried to get from Void Bastards, because of the amazing weaponry and skills in that game. Both games have you start out at a severely underpowered point, but in Wild Bastards, as you build your characters you have a better chance of seeing each of them shine to their fullest. GAMEPLAY: This game is for you if you enjoy: - class-based First Person Shooters - crisp, beautiful comic book-/graphic novel-like art styles - well written inter-party banter - rogue-likes/rogue-lites, but also want a bit of story This game centers around a character-rich roster of well-written- and acted cowboy-pulp action heroes. Each plays differently and you get to pair them up so you can try out different combinations. I thoroughly enjoyed overland/space push-your-luck planning and resource management - even though they seem to build on the same core, it seems fairly expanded from the systems that was seen in Void Bastards. THE CHALLENGE MODE: When I unlocked the Challenge mode and tried it out, I was frustrated at first. This was mainly because I had gotten used to the upgraded versions of my heroes, but as I examined each challenge and approached them each as a puzzle, I started to enjoy them immensely. I had to assess the drawbacks of the challenge and measure them against the advantages my heroes (potentially) offered and lean into my the strengths I had at my disposal. Before I knew it, I had played through a nice chuck of them and had a ball doing it! And I managed to unlock neat gear for future playthroughs. CONCLUSION: If you enjoyed the gameplay or the look of Void Bastards and enjoy action games, you are going to have a great time with Wild Bastards! I am huge fan of both and can't wait to see what new games come out from Blue Manchu in the future.

Loved Void Bastards and if you like that you'll like Wild Bastards- and while this isn't a sequel, its a similar game loop and comparisons will be made... this is by far an inferior game to Void Bastards. Take this as a luke-warm recommendation, I still had a lot of fun with it. Wild Bastards never really feels like you 'get going' - like in Void when you have some upgrades, if feels like you can start taking on riskier levels, whereas in Wild you're tied to the characters and their abilities and upgrades, which over time all your characters just sort of get better. By no means this is a bad thing, it's just different. During levels, you're never pressed for time to complete them, in contrast again to Void where you always had an air limit timer - but this usually means you can take your time to cheese the enemies, by getting an angle where you can shoot their leg or something - which is often useful because some enemies can feel a bit 'hit-scan-ish' - there is a mechanic in the game similar to Void's pirates where you're being chased by three different 'princes' - early game these can be a bit of a pain, but by mid-late game they're trivialised (speaking as someone playing in hard) as just inconvenient encounters. The 4th and final prince that can arrive is apparently unbeatable but I never stayed around to find out - I was always 'done' by then anyway and onto the next section. Part of the games strategy is selecting the right Wild Bastard(s) when dropping into a level to deal with whatever enemies are there, but in terms of strategy overall, this is about it. No management of fuel or food or anything else. There is a game mechanic where your team can be friends or foes - which seemed to run itself in my play though - I rarely had to use beans to resolve any disputes. Depending on your choices, the game can feel quite difficult if you selected the wrong type of character for the enemies you're fighting - but then you also get the opposite, it can be too easy if you've selected the right match up. Sometimes levels last less than 60 seconds as you whip through them. The characters are all varied, and I found them all useful one way or another. Some of the less conventional characters (i.e ones that don't have guns and shoot 'normally') I initially didn't like, I found to be some of the best and overpowered, while some of the more conventional characters (pew pew gun types) were actually more useful as 'buffer' characters, or characters you take along because of their passive skills (like healing or regenerating armour after a level or something like that) Some decent voice acting, and a silly but entertaining loose story, no different to watching a cartoon at times. Under 20 hours to complete the game on hard, and some replayability in here too. Overall, it's an ok game if you set your expectations below Void Bastards and look to buy when its about a tenner.
