One of the best games I've ever had the pleasure of playing, full stop. It made me remember what it felt like when I opened my DS and booted up Pokemon Pearl for the first time. Don't be fooled by it being Early Access: the main campaign is completed and you can easily get around 40-50 hours of story content if you like to explore and be thorough. The only real markers of the game being in EA are the unfinished Beastie art and animations. The game has around 100 Beasties, and around half of them are fully animated in gorgeous 2D traditional animation. The rest of them are in varying states of completion, but I want to point out that A) the placeholder art does the job well enough and B) the team complete new batches of art and animation every few months. This studio has a great track record for their games, and I sincerely believe you shouldn't let the Early Access tag dissuade you if you tried the demo and liked what you played. The Beastie vs Beastie gameplay is fun, inspired and deceptively complex; the more you play, the deeper you realize the systems go. It's not a particularly hard game, but depending on the choices you make in the campaign later fights can become fairly challenging. Additionally, the game's PVP has a very low bar of entry and is carefully rebalanced every few patches. The PVP community for the game is incredibly passionate and eager to invite new Coaches into the scene. I almost exclusively have good things to say about Beastieball honestly. The Beastie roster is one of the most robust in any creature collector I've played - there may not be 500+ like in Palworld, but there's a real variety of creatures on display and every single Beastie is crafted with such loving attention to detail. Lena Raine composed the OST, which should tell you all you need to know about how good it is. The game's music elevates the experience from great to exceptional. The story and characters are charming, funny and memorable, and there's some real heart in the way that certain real world issues are tackled. The game also just feels really smooth to play with QoL that feels like it truly respects you as a player and wants you to have as great of a time as possible. If you're on the fence, I hope this review helps you make your decison. I'm so grateful to have stumbled upon this game. It's brought me so much joy and reminded me that games are primarily meant to inspire and delight. My life will forever be better off for having played this game.

Among the sea of Creature Collectors that have popped up over the past decade or so since the steady decline of quality in Pokemon, none quite stand out like Beastieball. A fresh new take on the genre, Beastieball is a Creature Collecting & Turn Based RPG, instead of throwing animals at eachother like a cretin, you battle on the court! How civilized! You don't even need to like sports or know anything about volleyball (like I did going in) to enjoy/understand the game. The creature designs in this game are genuinely top notch, they feel so unique without entering the territory of uncanny valley or ripoff. There's around 100 to collect in this game - and if that sounds like a small amount, don't worry because it doesn't feel like that at all. The beasties are spread around very evenly among the different regions of the game, never once did I feel exhausted seeing the same creature over and over. Another little tidbit that helped keep the small amount of beasties fresh was that they spawn in different colors - and shinies. There's a predetermined range of colors your beastie can spawn in, each one is slightly different which adds such a fun twist! Some beasties also evolve by just leveling up, but only a handful. A good amount require special tasks to get them to the next stronger stage. Catching them works similarly, with each beastie having it's own set of circumstances for you to fulfill before you can recruit them to your team. The battle system is also innovative and new while sticking to familiar routes - instead of typing there are only 3 stats. All beasties have these stats in both offense and defense. Gyms are scattered around the map allowing you to specifically train these stats even higher if you want a certain build on your beastie. You get five beasties in your party, three moves each (An excellent QoL is that you can switch between moves out of battle whenever you want for free). Every battle is a 2v2, the moves reflect this, punishing the player for trying to solo with just one beastie. Despite being early access, the game is basically complete with the main campaign practically done and a plethora of beasties for you to collect. There are so many fun NPCs for you to meet and even connect with! (I LOVE YOU RIVEN), definitely worth the pricetag. You'll mostly feel the early access vibes once you venture out - with only 20 or so beasties fully animated and complete. Placeholder sprites & sketches fill the incomplete spots but don't make the game unplayable at all. There is so much content in this game, easily 20+ hours alone if you just try to breeze through the main campaign. Please please please pick up Beastieball now, you won't regret it. My only complaint is that I want more, but alas I can't rush a masterpiece.

This game is basically what creature collectors should strive to be IMO. It's fun mechanically, the systems (generally) don't feel like they're screwing over players, and it's just kinda funny that the combat is just *volleyball*. My only complaint about the game is that there are still beasties that haven't got finished animations, but that's more of an issue with the game being in early access rather than the game developer's fault. And the devs seem to care about balance based off of their announced changes. Also, the storyline and characters are adorable. Like, the game WANTS you to like the other coaches, there's funky dialog everywhere in the game, and there was actual thought into how a large amount of volleyball-playing creatures actually fit into an environment (which I actually found surprising as that's something that I thought was just "oh, it's a game mechanic!" explanation). Overall, this game is fun. It's really fun, and the only thing stopping me from progressing any further is the animations, which they're already working on.

The instant I finished the demo, I sat back and thought to myself, "This game is going to become one of my favourites of all time." 200+ hours later, I can confirm that, yes, this game is that good . Despite being in EA, the story itself is fully finished with plenty of postgame content; what's unfinished is some of the character hangouts, a couple areas, and most of the Beastie animations. I understand waiting for full release if that might bother you, but right now the game is fully playable and, in my experience, bug-free. Short version: Clear and distinct art direction, thoughtful creature designs, simple but engaging story, fun gameplay loop with an accessible learning curve, well written dialogue, banging music, fantastic community—so many elements make it worth playing. At the very least, try out the demo! It's a great representation of the full game. Long version: [*] The game is unique and sets itself apart from Pokémon. Yes, comparisons are inevitable. Despite some parallels, however, the battle mechanics are refreshing and distinct. The whole “volleyball” thing—offense and defense turns, grid-based lanes, and winning through scoring 2-3 points rather than defeating the entire opponent team—sounds odd, but it’s intuitive and fun. It also some kicks some conventional design choices in the genre away to the curb because it simply didn’t fit with the game’s vision; a good sign, because the devs make intentional decisions rather than blindly following convention. Flavour-wise, there are some weird things in Pokémon that are sort of glossed over, such as earning money, capturing creatures in Poké Balls, and storing them in PCs indefinitely, but their Beastieball equivalents are well explained and give much agency to your Beasties. [*] A tremendous amount of care is put into each and every single Beastie design. The artist team seems to comprise many people passionate about animals, and it shows. There’s also a vast amount of variety in the cast; I guarantee that you will fall in love with something in this game. The dev said it best: “Designs always need to have a weird element, something that drives some people away and attracts others. With 100+ Beasties in the game, we can afford to have 95 that you don’t even like, if it means that there’s 5 that feel specifically made for you.” [*] The devs frequently engage with the community and are always open to suggestions and ideas. Multiple times, I've sent feedback ingame or requested something in the community Discord, and that idea ended up getting implemented within the next couple patches. I've seen them make changes relating to accessibility, story choices, UI and visual clutter, and even balance/gameplay in response to fan critique. That's not to say that they listen to everything, and they often explain why some popularly requested features are unlikely to be implemented from a dev point of view, but that they're so receptive to and communicative with their audience is a great sign of where the game is headed. [*] The game is well balanced; each and every single Beastie has a niche. It’s certainly not perfect, but early access means that there’s a ton of data from players that the devs can use to push out balance changes every month. Plus, they don’t just pay attention to what’s fair—they also look at what’s fun . If something has an ordinary winrate in PvP but is widely seen as unfun to play against, the devs prioritise changing it in some way. Balance changes are also careful to take the single-player experience into account. The amount of passion put into this game is tangible and can't be understated. I 100% recommend playing it! If you're at all interested in the PvP scene: please come join the Discord! I can't emphasize enough how helpful and welcoming everyone is. The top players are incredibly warm and encouraging toward beginners, and there are several community resources made specifically to lower the barrier of entry. Come join us, we’d love to have you!

my pet clown spider and giant bandicoot had marital problems in the middle of a volleyball game and it almost made us lose. easily one of the best games i've played in recent memory. jokes aside, this game is delightful. as a longtime pokemon fan it scratches every itch i have for those games and more - the inspiration is very present, but unlike many creature-collectors it doesn't get bogged down in "being a pokemon-like." the "battle" system is intricate and yet intuitive, the story and characters are charming as hell, and the soundtrack absolutely rips. pretty much every fully-metamorphed beastie is competitively viable, too, if you know what you're doing. the game is in early access, but it's only unfinished in regards to beastie assets and post-game content. my one critique is that UI elements occasionally overlap and become difficult to read. this can be mitigated slightly by enabling "detail sport view" in the settings, but that still doesn't solve every instance of this issue. besides that one small nitpick, game is great. play game. do it
