Very fluid movement, very good level design, pretty charming. The most fun I've had in a 3d platformer since Hat in Time. The game doesn't put its best foot forward. The large, open-ish desert area the game plops you into out of the tutorial is the buggiest part of the game, and the level design isn't as good as later areas. Once you get to the bite-sized, jungle-gym-not-sandbox areas later on it really shines.

this is an aggressively ok game. it's never explicitly bad and there's some good parts but there's no great parts. there aren't sections where you get a real flow to the platforming because of how broken up it is with tossing items around, and at the same time the item use is always just "use this to go higher" so it isn't very puzzlely or compelling. a big problem is that while it's not really a collect-a-thon, the world is littered with dark dots you need to gain upgrades and they're not fun to collect. if you're starting the game i'll just say: don't bother with them, the upgrades aren't very significant and stacked is basically the only thing approaching must-have, plus maybe grip strength. also i don't think the amount of dark drips you have ever matters? they're not tied to progression, they're just there. you also never get environments that mess with your expectations or force lateral thinking or feel creative or get rewarded for using your tools in interesting ways. also there's no button mapping yet, which IS a sin. but the game is charming and it feels good to move around and it doesn't overstay its welcome and sometimes that's enough.

Fantastic game and a steal at this price. The characters and graphics are super cute and fun, as everyone has already mentioned the controls and movements are 10/10, but I would also like to give a shout out to the voice actors as it's really well done as well. I love everything about this game so far which is funny because this is a genre I usually avoid. Also I would like to mention it runs like it was developed for the Steam Deck, I've played exclusively on deck and it's run flawlessly.

The movement in this game feels so good, it is great to see more people trying stuff in the 3D platforming genre.

Picked up this game and thoroughly enjoyed it. You'll enjoy it too if you're a fan of 3D platformers from the last decade or so. The movement in this game has some obvious comparisons (Odyssey) but Big Hops iterates on it and makes innovations of its own. Being able to pick up and interact with objects using your tongue makes interacting with fiddly ground items a lot easier. Levels are big enough for you to really chew on a theme but small enough that you don't get tired of them. Difficulty is hard enough that you don't smash through levels but not hard enough that you'll get stuck for very long. There are side quests and collectibles to explore for if you're really enjoying an area, but you also don't need to stick around if you're not feeling it. The problem-solving in this game is particularly fun. The tools (veggies) respawn infinitely and you gain the ability to carry spares around fairly early on in the game. You can save your favorites and pull them out whenever, it really addresses the feeling of being stuck you sometimes get in this genre. It also makes you feel clever when you solve a problem the "wrong" way. This is not to say the game is flawless. I ran into 2 soft lock scenarios in my play through, one where I was able to hurl myself off a cliff repeatedly to restart and another where I had to quit to the Title Screen to reload the area. Neither took me longer than a minute or so to get back to platforming. Targeting specific objects with your tongue is sometimes difficult, especially if there are other targets in the area. You can get into positions where it's technically possible to progress, but tedious and easier if you just restarted the level. I think this game would benefit from a "Restart from Last Checkpoint" button. The coins, dyes and veggie crafting system left something to be desired. I only touched each of these systems lightly and didn't see a huge impact on the core gameplay throughout my run. They're certainly systems I would love to see expanded upon in DLC or additional content. Overall, easy recommendation of this game to anyone who wanted a fun platformer with good movement tech to sink their teeth into.
