Got this after buying - and loving - Well Dweller. Of course, this is a much smaller game, but the developer's good touch is still there - very nice-feeling controls, a good sense of humor, and overall a very fun experience, with accessibility options for those - like me - who don't want to be overwhelmed by the challenge, so I played on Easy mode. Got 104%. I only had trouble in some segments where I had to figure out the next step in my journey. The graphics are nice but a bit samey throughout the whole game, which is OK for an inexperienced developer. 7/10
Played it because I loved Crypt Custodian and it didn't dissapoint. The overall feeling of the game and comedic writting is very similar. Despite being a platformer, that part isn't actually that bad. Quite easy actually. I didn't mind, but if you seek something a little more challenging, it's not the right choice. Imo bosses were way harder. I think one of them took me about 15-20 deaths. Altough I also picked Hard difficulty so that might have been a reason why.
Not just incredibly well made for a first game, but a great game in its own right. Nearly every element that Kyle Thompson has refined over his next two games - Islets and Crypt Custodian - were already well realized here. Well, except for the combat since this game doesn't really have any, but the exploration, slick movement, quirky humor, and bullet-hell-lite enemy patterns are here and already great. It is a bit on the short side, but that's not a negative. Every room has purpose and your time is respected, not wasted. If you haven't played any of Kyle's games yet, I highly recommend picking up the whole bundle and starting here. If you have played one or both of his later games, I still recommend picking this up to appreciate just how innately skilled he is at crafting a great Metroidvania. Super excited for Well Dweller, and whatever else he makes in the future.
The first of Kyle Thompson's metroidvanias, Sheepo is a gentle puzzle-platformer that shows signs of promise but I wish it had a little more substance personally. We are Sheepo, the titular sheep-ish alien. They arrive on a planet tasked with recovering the 6 eggs of the various species of life local to it. The denizens of the world don't seem terribly disposed to just give them up though, and so Sheepo tends to run afoul of some monstrous bosses who guard them. The name of the game is platforming and exploration. Sheepo has a neat transformation power that at first lets them use glowing white points to launch themselves over distances, but as you find eggs you gain the ability to temporarily turn into the species you find. The abilities that grants you are contextual; birds let you fly and boney worms let you burrow through the ground, for example, and naturally mastering all of Sheepo's forms is vital for total coverage of the planet. The one thing Sheepo can't do is fight, which means the requisite boss fights represent the primary challenge points in the game; a number of them tend to feature a repetitive sequence of dodging until you can trick a homing attack to hit the boss' face, which is a bit pedestrian. It's a short, sweet metroidvania though, and a nice low stakes entry point into the genre.
