It's a typical real-time-tactics capture the control points game, with a bit deeper simulation. [...] AI knows when it is being seen by the officers, instantly attacking them. All the tanks with all the different guns have the same range, which is only a little bit bigger than the LoS. The tiniest cars with the smallest machineguns have the same range as the biggest emplaced cannons. Only artillery have its variety of ranges. There's no black fog of war, and the maps are assembled from templates, so you memorize the gun positions very fast and can just fire blindly with your artillery. [...] The game simulates LoS, but it doesn't simulate firing lines. All the units shoot through walls without destroying them. Short TTK is good and fun when the game is perfectly responsive and your units precisely execute your orders. But in this game the unit AI is beyond braindead. Your controls are not very precise, and then your units just don't execute your orders anyway, and do that with weak feedback. If you select your compact group tanks and attack-move send them somewhere, one will rush forward and die alone, two will jump into trenches and get destroyed by the infantry, three will ride on the very edge of the map, four will get lost between two trees, five will be forever stuck inside each other and other units, and six will ride arse-backwards with their 15mm armour towards the enemy and 155mm front armour towards your base. It's is hard to even describe how bad the pathfinding is and how unresponsive and stupid the units are. [...] While the game does not succeed in creating the value CoH offered to super casual players — pretence of deep tactics for elderly beer-belly couch potatoes with opinions about migrants. The fantasy is still there, if you engage with the game on normal and above difficulties. For normal functional adults playing on easy is still viable. It's not too easy, yet you don't have to use the broken mechanics almost at all. i remember playing the hell out of this game when i was in middle school (2004-2008) days of my life... well spent! this game is not a AAA title, this is from the days when a small studio could make a game that competed with the likes of Microsoft studios. hell it predates the second iraq war! i remember hearing updates on the battle of fallujah on the tv in the other room while paying this game. i almost never play this game anymore due to newer games, but every once in a while i start it up and remember life before i had to pay taxes.

Classic, old fashioned, simple. Difficult due to limited AI: you will often run into situations where you have to fight superior units, but the game is so simplistic, that your options to tackle the problem are few. I think the game expects you to just give up and walk away from those fights till you've grinded enough to unlock more units, or better units, but you are capped on the quality of unit you can get per chapter, so quantity becomes the only option. So even if you grind, you will still take casualties. There is no perfect solution, which is a good thing, but you have few options, which is bad. You will either master the cheese, or you will grind. Either way, the learning curve is shallow and subtle. You can speed run the game if you don't mind blunt force trauma. But if you want to play efficiently, you're going to have to chew on each chapter for a while, and take your time. But it is nice that the game doesn't chain you down with rules. The limitations are logistical. There is no hard limit, you can theoretically win, even in impossible situations... you just have to adjust your victory conditions. For example, you may soft lock yourself if you lose all your armor piercing weapons, but there are many objectives you can cheese by spamming infantry, so long as you have supply trucks and supply caches to reinforce them over and over. Again, a terrible bloody solution, but it is a solution. Those are the kinds of dilemmas the game faces you with. There aren't any hard counters besides AAA vs planes, but there are subtle limitations that can be exploited. For example, some types of AAA can't hit high altitude aircraft. So you may think you can't use air support in a given sector due to AAA coverage, but then you find out they are using low altitude Bofors, and you have strat bombers. You aren't told this, you just find out through trial and error. Here is something cool: fighters can perform ground attacks, if assigned to that role, while retaining their air-to-air capabilities: Combined with their speed, and high cruising altitude, they can bypass most AAA until they are on a strafeing run. And because of their high speed, they are very hard for AAA to actually hit, meaning if they aren't distracted, they can sometimes defeat AAA in a one-on-one fight. Sadly, the game never give you fighters in the ground attack role: but they do sometimes put dive bombers into the bomber role. There are loads of mechanical secrets hidden in the game, that require experimentation to find.

It's just a classic RTS, perhaps the Father of all RTS, if you want to play a game that's actually good, or if you want to go on a nostalgia trip, this game it's for you!
