I said in my BTD6 review that I still think BTD5 is the best game in the series, and I stand by that. It's late 2026, this game is over a decade old, and I can still open it and lose several hours like absolutely nothing has changed. BTD5 is peak because of how simple it is. You pick a map, pick a difficulty, and within 10 seconds you're playing. There's no massive menu with 400 different things fighting for your attention, no constant events to keep up with, and no feeling that you're missing something if you just want to play a normal game. The progression is also still ridiculously satisfying. Starting with almost nothing and slowly building up a massive defense, making more money, unlocking better upgrades, and eventually having the entire map covered never gets old. The two-path upgrade system is simple enough that you barely have to think about it, but there's still plenty of strategy in deciding what to build and where to put it. There's also a TON of content here. The huge map selection, different modes, special missions, co-op, agents, Monkey Lab upgrades, and everything else give you more than enough to do without making the game feel overwhelming. It's one of those games that's just as good for mindlessly playing while watching something as it is for actually trying to beat the harder maps and challenges. That's why I think BTD5 is still completely viable in 2026 and will be for years. It doesn't need constant updates or new mechanics because the core game is already good enough to keep coming back to. BTD6 is obviously bigger, newer, and has WAY more content, but sometimes that's exactly why I'd rather play 5. BTD5 feels like Ninja Kiwi perfected the original formula before deciding to make everything bigger with 6. It's simple, insanely replayable, rewarding, and still one of my favorite tower defense games ever made. Also, it has the Bloonchipper. 10/10.
Bloons TD 5 is honestly almost better than Bloons TD 6 in some ways. It may be the older and less flashy game, but there are several things it does that I still prefer over its successor. One of the biggest is progression. Almost everything can be earned simply by playing the game, with only a few tower skins sitting outside of that progression. It makes unlocking things feel much more rewarding and gives you a reason to keep playing instead of constantly reminding you that additional purchases exist. I also really like the Specialty Buildings. Being able to choose a building that improves a specific tower and even gives it additional abilities adds another layer to planning your strategy. It's a relatively simple system, but it makes specializing in particular towers much more interesting. It's also one of the features I genuinely miss when playing Bloons TD 6. There is still plenty of content here as well, and the core tower defense gameplay has aged extremely well. Building defenses, experimenting with different tower combinations, and gradually unlocking more options remains just as addictive as ever. Bloons TD 6 certainly expanded the formula in many ways, but newer doesn't automatically mean better in every regard. Between the more satisfying play-to-earn progression and Specialty Buildings, Bloons TD 5 still has some advantages over its successor and remains absolutely worth playing today.
