Being a spiritual successor to any game can be difficult as old diehard fans can set their expectations to unrealistic standards. So yes, this is going to be another review that makes comparisons to Blockland. That being said, Brickadia holds itself up well. It looks great and added much needed features like micro bricks, the ability to change grid scaling allowing for different placement of bricks, a variety of tools, etc. At this stage in its development, it feels uncomfortable to me comparing it to Blockland or a "gmod with lego", because it's reached levels of creativity that i've wished Blockland regularly had. There are 3 major things that drew me to Blockland - the creativity, the community, and the variety in servers. With the addition of microchips, wiring, and physics that Blockland could only dream of, Brickadia has given the tools to create basically anything. I love exploring servers and seeing the different things that people are testing or using the microbricks to create beautiful structures. And what makes it better is doing it with friends. Blockland was released before it was ever on Steam and folk mostly heard of it through word of mouth. With such a niche community, it's only normal to run into the same faces repeatedly. Moving to Brickadia all these years later I was a bit apprehensive. I read the negative reviews, I had my share of bad experiences in Blockland, and I didn't know how much the community would differ in Brickadia. To my surprise and relief, the old heads who did come over are cool - It's been wild running into people I met 20 years ago. On top of that, I've had the pleasure of making new friends in a mostly friendly, progressive community. I've heard Brickadia described as "woke blockland" and though that was said jokingly, I think it's a good descriptor. Blockland had a problem with people who created offensive, racist, disgusting servers and builds. Brickadia doesn't put up with that nonsense and it's helped cultivate a more positive community all around. My only issue with the game right now is the lack of server variety*. I say that with a grain of salt, because when I mentioned this to someone in game, they quickly recommended a server that we go join and try out. It was a lot of fun and was an answer to my complaint immediately. Most of the servers you'll see are community freebuilds. A type of server where you get to create with others. Those are great, but sometimes I crave something different. In Blockland, it was easy to go from a freebuild to a "left 4 dead" server or a "jail escape" or some team-pvp deathmatch with classes. I don't see as much of that in Brickadia, but with more players means more opportunities for those types of servers. And to be fair, I have seen them pop up occasionally. Most of the complaints I've seen people have with Brickadia revolve around dramas here and there. In any social game, there's bound to be disagreements, dramas, and people wanting to share those. Most I've seen involve the devs and discord, but I haven't paid too much attention to either. I've known some of the devs from our shared experiences on Blockland, but I hold no ill will towards them. Focusing on the game itself has been positive and I find myself wanting to play more. It's a good game.
A very satisfying game with gigantic potential, but there's an even gigantic-er blemish on its face: its own price point. The mental gymnastics it must have taken to charge $30 (EDIT: now $20) at the time of writing for a game which can only really receive tangible momentum off the back of its own community is... honestly really impressive. This aint Minecraft ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Minecraft actually has a GAME that you can play. This is Roblox, but Roblox Studio is actually GMod and its incredibly well made too and integrates very neatly into every Roblox game. If you wanna play any of the games though, you'll need to pay a teensy little entrance fee of 5 MILLION DOLLARS PER PERSON. Ok, hyperbole, but I can only think of creative autistics like yours truly as the ONLY tangible audience for this because only people like me could fork over that much money for it, at least right now. Listen, I love building things and this game delivers that experience PERFECTLY. It feels so good and satisfying to build! You can make your builds look just beautiful, professional even, AND there is a physics system you can apply ON TOP of the lego builds you make for a more animated and even dynamic experience. For christ's sake, you can build your own wheel'd vehicle however you want, it's madness! And I'm just scratching the surface. Hell, all I know IS the surface. And unless I'm wrong, theres plenty more to come too. I mean it when I say I am completely fine climbing the $30 (EDIT: now $20) high wall just to gain access to that alone. But I can't think of a single friend I know who'd be willing (and autistic) enough to climb up the wall too. I'm not ashamed of my decision, nor am I regretting it, but I sort of feel like I'm Kevin McCallister from Home Alone: everything's just amazing until I finally realize I'm all alone and cant share the fun with anyone else i know irl. 10/10 would recommend, a great game you shouldn't play idk whatever ♥♥♥♥ you
One of the biggest reasons steam needs a neutral review. Arguably one of the best building and programming games on steam right now, but it has almost no online player-base. If you're looking at the game strictly for its building, 100% worth the price if you're looking at it for online play of any kind, either wait until a spike in popularity or a full release, or try and convince your friends to get it
