as another reviewer correctly stated, this game is not what you think it's about. i won't spoil it here, but this is a (most likely) fictionalized telling of an actual event that happened. there are plot threads that come and go, that are momentarily important before being annulled or diverted by other things. it feels almost like a Hitchcock film - like how Janet Lee's stolen money plot in Psycho is suddenly and violently made moot, despite how much of the beginning of the film focused on it. not all of the content is localized to English so I may have missed some important notes or clues or thematic moments in things like newspapers or tv/radio broadcasts. there are also a couple subtitles that aren't translated either. a lot of this game is very mundane (which makes me think of Hitchcock again), with very adventure game-y "search the environment for the item" sequences that don't always make sense. for example, you receive a television from your brother, but need an antenna - luckily you just suddenly have one in the store room across the hall for no reason. i think this game could have used a button that would put up a subtle waypoint on the item you need to use next. this would work even if it was more vague, like the game pointing you towards the kitchen or storeroom but not exactly the thing you need to interact with. sometimes the character will say "oh this thing i need is in the kitchen," but often they just say "i need lightbulbs" but give you no clue where to find them. having a more explicit waypoint would stop players having to aimlessly search every room they can currently access, when the character probably would know where items in their apartment are. overall, the game sets a very still, eerie mood that will stick with me, and hopefully you. p.s. where did the parents sleep in this apartment? the daughter has her own room with one bed in it, and i guess one of the parents could use the couch, but where does the other one sleep? presumably the wife slept near where the daughter did for reasons that become clear late in the game, and the father slept somewhere further away? what is the sleeping situation in this dang apartment? i am legitimately asking

Страшная история, если вдуматься во все произошедшее с этими несчастными людьми.

Хорошая, короткая игра! Концовке не сильно удивился, потому что был знаком с подобной историей, но она заставила меня еще раз вздрогнуть, что такой случай имел место быть.

Played beginning to end in VR with the UEVR injector mod. Very immersive slice-of-life in a 1980s Soviet apartment (especially in VR). The narrative takes a while to reveal itself but the payoff is very worth it, especially knowing this is based on a true story. Definitely worth experiencing.

Introduction Bright Lights of Svetlov is a short story-driven adventure game set in the USSR. Pros & Cons Pros: + Immersive gameplay + Gripping story + Atmosphere of the long-gone era Cons: - Pixel hunting - Technical issues - Visual quality is all over the place Story Over the course of the game, you take control of multiple characters living in the same apartment. They’re a family of three: husband, wife and their teenager daughter. There’s also another character who moved in years later, but his role in the story is pretty small. It starts off as a slice of life kind of game where you go through everyday struggles of washing the dishes and taking out the trash. But this is just a way to immerse you into the world, making the drama that is to come hurt much more. Gameplay Gameplay wise, it’s a first-person adventure, where you pick different items and use them in order to progress. It’s not like there are any puzzles. You just solve those everyday problems by opening every drawer and reading every post-it note you find. It’s easy to get stuck, because of the pixel hunting. At times, the character just wouldn’t interact with something without giving you any hints at what to do. Like, for example, when you need to turn on the water in the sink. But the knob you have to turn to do it so small, that it’s hard to miss and think you’ve hit some kind of bug. There are also some minor technical issues, like glitching collisions with doors. Graphics & Audio The visual quality is all over the place as is usual for low budget indie titles. However, there’s some good work on the lightning and some clever ways to cut costs without affecting the overall quality. However, there are a couple of scenes where you leave the apartment and they stick out like a sore thumb. Voice acting is average. There are no notable performances, possibly because the most impactful lines are delivered through post-it notes. The background sounds and soundtrack are great. They fit the setting of the game and work well to set the mood. Performance Specs: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU 8GB, 32GB RAM. The game runs at 60 on max settings at 1440p resolution without any issues. Conclusion Bright Lights of Svetlov is a great game to spend an evening on, if you like story-focused games with little to no gameplay. While it may be kind of bad on the technical side, it’s story and immersive atmosphere more than make up for it.
