A remake/reimagining of the original Bright Memory. I reviewed the first a lifetime ago (in 2019. The old and the weak are doomed...) and it was pretty mediocre. However, this is a much better realised game. The goofy pace breaking puzzles from that where you jumped on blocks or whatever are gone, though there's still some issues. Like the original, this is RAGE 2 meets Shadow Warrior meets Call of Duty Advance Warfare with a light dash of Devil May Cry thrown in. The combat system is pretty fluid and lets you experiment quite a bit without locking you into a specific playstyle: you can shoot, use your sword, throw enemies into the air and juggle them, drag them to you and make them explode, and so on. It's all very good and the hit feedback/enemy reactions/reload animations/etc. for everything related to the combat is appropiately meaty and satisfying and there's collectibles associated to an upgrade system that lets you unlock a few extra moves like a rocket punch. Unfortunately, while there's no dumb puzzles this time around, there's a forced stealth section a quarter into the game that is a complete bore. Thankfully the enemy AI during it is braindead and at most it shouldn't take longer than 10-20 minutes, but it still sucks. The combat in this game is the star of the show and it reminds me of the new Wolfenstein games where you wonder why they thought it was a good idea since it's not why you are playing the game at all. It should've been straight up removed and only seems to exist to slightly pad out what is a 2 hour game. The story is also complete nonsense. So nonsensical that I thought it had to be a sequel to the original release and I did more work than anyone should and actually watched a playthrough of that to see if it was and no - like I said before this is a full reimagining/remake. The writing in this is basically tuning into the second season of a TV show with not knowledge of the first with characters already knowing each other and concepts being namedropped without any explanation. Even after two playthroughs none of it made any sense. You are a perfectly coiffed out of place young anime girl in a gritty word and you work for an organization that may or may not investigate dimension hopping/paranomal events. The bad guy also supposedly knows you from previous encounters like a saturday morning cartoon villain and wants a device that will let him rebuild the world or something. There's another bad guy from the Other Dimension who says he'll tell you who he is but nothing ever comes out of that and typing all this is already tiring. It's like playing the follow up to something that doesn't exist. While the cutscenes are thankfully rare and incredibly brief, there's a really pointless 2 minute intro that you can't skip when starting a new game. Once again, not too bad, but this is a fast paced 2 hour game and that should be skippable (none of the cutscenes in the game are). Still, this is a game that remembers that an FPS should be mainly about fun combat with satisfying hit feedback (something that a lot of AAA and indie shooters forget), so for that alone it's easily worth a playthrough or two if you like fast paced shooters.

It is a short but very dynamic shooter with good graphics and gameplay mechanics. Really, wish the Shadow Warrior would be something like this game. Although the replayability is good, I faced 6-8 crashes through 3 playthroughs. Hope to see the next project in the future.

The fact that this game was made by 1 person is incredible. I've bought this game on Switch, Xbox, and PC just to show love to the Dev. The game isn't flawless and has a few hiccups here and there, but the gameplay is solid. No pun intended, but this game is infinitely replayable. Being able to carry over your progress to the other difficulty settings is something I wish more games let you do. It definitely helped getting all the achievements. Incredibly underrated game. Give it a shot. I can't recommend it enough.

This is one of those games where you have to look at it from a whole in order to appreciate it. This game's original team consisted entirely of one person. While others could have joined the team later on, that was who came up with the concept. Given that, it's very impressive. For starters I love the game play. It could stand to allow me to change the button scheme and skip cut scenes, but it's a short enough game (around 2 hours, give or take) that this wasn't a huge deal. Don't expect much from the story, It's more reminiscent of the original early era Playstation games where there's no real story to it. You're just fighting bad guys because. This also means that character development is non existent. It also means that the game play gets a little silly. Random stealth mission? Sure. Car chase? Why not? The ending has a very obvious anti American political prod, but okay. It is still worth purchasing and having a lot of fun with. <3 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3493594456 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3497081087 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3498551869
