This is a fun little 'collectathon'/ semi N64 style game in a humorous virtual world full of ｖａｐｏｒｗａｖｅ ａｅｓｔｈｅｔｉｃｓ. Doesn't take itself seriously, sort of GTA-style humor in the worldbuilding full of brands that are parodies of real life stuff. The game is also stuffed with 2010s internet references, so if you were online during that time plenty of little 'microjokes' around. The settings and vibe are hands down what makes this game, if you enjoy that vaporwave style ambience this is probably the best game out there for it. The gameplay itself is fairly simple and easy, bit of platforming that can get a little tricky late game, but nothing too difficult. When this game came out I got up to the part where you have to collect the mysterious triangles and lost interest, on a recent new playthrough I just pulled up the guide (if you open Guides in the steam overlay it should be right there) and had them all in maybe 5 minutes. It was no big deal. Getting the triangles also leads you into sort of secret areas, some of which have a bit of lore dropping to them. That leads into the final chapter of the game which is very... distinct, I regret not getting there the first time around. The ending admittedly I'm not sure I 'got' it/understood but that's ok. Makes for a good chill late night game when you're just trying to relax. If the screenshots and trailer appeal to you, what you see is what you'll get.
Broken Reality 2000 was recommended to me. I discovered it's a sequel, so I picked this up to see if it was something I'd like. I bought 2000 before I finished this one. I absolutely loved this game! Great music, perfect vaporwave aesthetic, fun NPCs, and some difficult areas that I was always able to solve by just slowing down and thinking through my options. It's definitely a favorite, and I'll replay it at some point.
Broken Reality is a mixed bag of interesting concepts that are all unfortunately underdeveloped. The closest game I can compare Broken Reality to is Jazzpunk, and I honestly feel the same way about both games. While Jazzpunk fully leans into the comedic parody elements, Broken Reality tries to sprinkle in tidbits of story while having those quirky interactions and dialogue between the characters and the world. The story of Broken Reality isn’t anything too complex or deep. Just from playing for the first hour, you can pretty much gleam that this is a story about the corruption and exploitation of a third space. In the case of this game, it's an online world, one that was started by a couple of friends that quickly grew in size to the point that investors wanted to buy in and make it public. Sprinkled in are also other elements of sentient AIs and trapping people within the online world. While those elements of the story are there, the game tends not to delve too deep into them, focusing more so on the gameplay and the comedic moments with characters. I feel like that approach could have worked, but ultimately, I would have liked to learn more about the creation of NATEM and the rift that formed between the original creators. I do really like the ending sequence of the game though. I think it's really well done and kind of makes me wish the entire game or at least more parts of it looked like it. However, in terms of concluding the story, it was pretty lackluster. I can forgive Jazzpunk because it doesn’t care about its story and just focuses on the comedy, while Broken Reality dangles an interesting, albeit done before story, in front of your face. In terms of the aesthetics, it's inspired by 90s internet and Vaporwave, while a lot of the comedy leans into the mid 2010s, sort of 2016 MLG comedy. Which makes sense since the game came out in 2018 and most of the comedy the game focuses on were things still culturally relevant at the time. In terms of gameplay, there's really not much to say. It's not a standard walking sim and I like the different equipment you get and their uses, but I feel like more probably could’ve been done. On a side note, there were a bunch of bugs I experienced. Most of them were minor, and I just had to reload the game, but still annoying. Although, I did experience a couple of bugs that actually made the game a bit more enjoyable and kind of make me want to see what a speedrun of this game would look like. I’m sure it would involve a lot of abusing the bookmark and prop surfing, at least those are the major things I’ve found. I really wanted to like this game more, and there are certain things I do like about it. The aesthetic for one is great, and the music is honestly pretty good too, but other than that, there's really not much to it. I will say I am more excited about Broken Reality 2000. Just from the trailers alone, it looks like a lot of the complaints I have will be rectified, just hoping the story will also be better too.
Gem of a game with a few endearing Easter eggs, especially if you were involved online in the 2010s. Without going into spoilers, some mechanics, imagery and events show a broader commentary on the state of social media, which some people might not care for, but for me got a lot of giggles and made the game even better. The platforming is creative and there's a good balance between the amount of puzzles and exploration time. Looking forward to Broken Reality 2000 this month!
