Some people can't stand older graphics, but they are missing out on some great games. This is one of them.

Like its predecessor, this game is atmospheric, gripping, and highly polished but this time around, it does everything even better. While it follows a similar formula, the execution is sharper across the board. The story pulls you in right from the start, and it’s brilliant to follow the fate of the squad as events unfold. The gunplay stands out as well. Hitting your target actually requires effort and precision, which makes every firefight feel tense and rewarding rather than mindless. Combined with the immersive setting and strong narrative, it cements the game as one of the best of its kind. I highly recommend Rendroc's warzone on nexus mods to greatly improve your experience or else the AI will give you lots of headaches.

Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood is a tactical first-person shooter that immerses players in the gritty realities of World War II combat through a blend of intense firefights, strategic squad commands, and a strong narrative focus. Developed by Gearbox Software and released on Steam years after its initial console launch, this game builds upon the foundations laid by its predecessor to deliver a more refined and emotionally charged experience. While it may show its age in some areas, Earned in Blood remains a compelling example of WWII shooters that prioritize tactical thinking and storytelling over run-and-gun action. Set during the Normandy campaign, the game follows Sergeant Joe “Red” Hartsock, a new protagonist who replaces the original game's Lieutenant Matt Baker. The story plunges players into the chaos of war as Hartsock leads a squad of soldiers through various missions, including reconnaissance, ambushes, and outright assaults on German positions. The narrative is deeply personal, highlighting the bonds between soldiers and the toll of combat, with moments of quiet reflection interspersed between high-octane firefights. Unlike many shooters of its era, Earned in Blood puts a significant emphasis on character development and camaraderie, making the wartime experience feel grounded and emotionally resonant. Gameplay is a hybrid of first-person shooting and tactical squad management. Players control Hartsock directly, engaging enemies with a variety of period-accurate weapons, while simultaneously issuing commands to their squadmates. These commands include positioning soldiers for cover, directing suppressive fire, and coordinating flanking maneuvers. This layer of strategy sets the game apart from more straightforward shooters, requiring careful planning and situational awareness. Success often depends not just on quick reflexes, but on how well you manage your team’s movements and make use of the battlefield environment. One of the most satisfying aspects of Earned in Blood is the level design, which encourages multiple approaches to objectives. Whether opting for stealth and precision or aggressive frontal assaults, the game provides enough flexibility to suit different playstyles. Environments feel authentic and varied, ranging from dense hedgerows and bombed-out villages to fortified enemy bunkers. The AI behaves competently, with enemies taking cover and attempting to flank, while your squad members react intelligently to your commands. This creates tense, dynamic encounters that keep you engaged and on your toes. The visuals and audio, while dated compared to modern titles, still effectively convey the brutal atmosphere of WWII. The character models and textures reflect the technical limitations of their time but remain detailed enough to support immersion. The sound design shines, with realistic weapon effects, ambient battlefield noises, and a stirring musical score that enhances the emotional weight of the story. Voice acting is solid, delivering believable performances that bring the soldiers’ personalities to life and deepen the player’s connection to the squad. One of the notable improvements over the first Brothers in Arms is the more streamlined command system, making squad control more intuitive and responsive. This refinement reduces frustration and allows players to focus on tactics and action rather than cumbersome controls. However, some occasional bugs and AI quirks can disrupt the flow, such as teammates getting stuck or behaving unpredictably, but these issues are relatively minor and don’t detract significantly from the overall experience. Multiplayer modes add some replayability, offering competitive and cooperative gameplay options that let players experience the tactical combat with friends or against others online. While these modes don’t match the depth of the single-player campaign, they provide a decent diversion and extend the game’s lifespan for those interested in team-based FPS challenges. Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood is a title that appeals especially to players who appreciate tactical depth and historical authenticity in their shooters. Its emphasis on squad-based strategy and narrative distinguishes it from many contemporaries, and its portrayal of the Normandy campaign is both respectful and compelling. Though it lacks the graphical polish and expansive scale of modern WWII shooters, its core gameplay remains engaging and rewarding, particularly for fans of methodical, team-oriented combat. In summary, Earned in Blood is a solid and thoughtful WWII shooter that successfully builds on its predecessor’s strengths. It offers a balanced mix of action and tactics, with well-crafted missions, memorable characters, and a serious tone that honors the sacrifices of the soldiers it depicts. If you’re interested in a more strategic and story-driven take on WWII, this game is worth revisiting on Steam, where it still holds up as a challenging and immersive experience despite the passage of time. Loved it as a teenager. Replayed it the whole way through during my deployment in Afghanistan back in 2014 when I was 19/20 years old. Slapped then, slaps now.
