Dec. 2024
I love this game, and it's one of my all time favorite metroidvanias. I adore the map layout and how secrets are hidden. I love the little puzzles. I love that there's two campaigns that use the same map layout, but how the different controls, different abilities, different bosses, and small map changes transform it into a completely new experience. And most of all, I love the controls in this game so much. All of the negative reviews mention hating the controls because they're stiff and clunky, and they are, but I claim they're stiff and clunky in a charming retro way. I can make that claim because the controls are ripped straight out of Super Metroid. There are two types of jumps: standing jumps, and walking jumps (also a dash/ jump kick). You can attack in the air, but you can't change direction. To change direction, you need to be on the ground. This is identical to Super Metroid. Do note that when we say the controls are clunky, we don't mean obtuse; you can easily change your direction and think nothing of it. It's simply something you need to be mindful of in the same subconscious way you need to be mindful of dodging enemy attacks in any video game. The reason I like the controls is because, one, you never see controls like this anymore and it actually widens the moveset tremendously in ways that modern games with simplified and not context-sensitive controls can't explore, and two, I think it's extremely satisfying making very deliberate movements while platforming in the same way that it's satisfying to make deliberately timed attacks in Dark Souls. I'd like to emphasize again that the controls are interfacing with a subconscious part of your brain, so writing more than a few words does a disservice to its simplicity, despite its depth. Anyways, about the game more generally, there's just something so charming and addicting about it. It feels so nice to play, and it's in its own weird little world. The tilesets make it look like a weird amateur, well, almost fan game adaption of something, but gameplay-wise it's way more competent than it looks. Also, both characters are extremely fun to play. I could go on at length about all of their different weapons and abilities and how you can try to hold on to your favorite weapons, or how one of the characters has the ability to place a ladder in the middle of the battlefield, which sounds ridiculous, but there's an increased fire rate when shooting from the ladder so it's actually awesome and you learn the right times to place it down and how to maneuver it and where to place it optimally, and so on. The game is just so creative in the most bizarre ways, and it extends to every facet of its design. Try it out! It's one of a kind, and you might also be mesmerized. Well, that's what I'd say if it was still available on Steam. If you somehow found this review and haven't played the game, it's still on other platforms. Supposedly there's version differences or improvements, too, but I don't know anything about that. I mainly wanted to write this review for myself to balance out those that disliked the controls. Fair to them, but I don't want the reviews to give off the impression that the game is only enjoyed by ignoring the controls rather than them being another source of enjoyment.
