I was a tween during Catherine's initial release; the mature themes went over my head, but I was pretty good at puzzle games. As I've grown older, I found myself replaying this game during major turning points in my life (tumultuous relationships, graduations, deaths of loved ones). A lot can happen in 15 years, so I think it's neat that my in-game decisions align with my evolving virtues. In retrospect, Catherine prepared me for a few hardships I've encountered during my adulthood. Relationships are complicated, so it's very refreshing to have a video game that explores such mature concepts candidly; themes such as sexuality, relationship abuse, existentialism (just to name a few) are portrayed organically in a way I found oddly comforting. From the story pacing to the chemistry between characters, the game's cohesivity immerses you into the story and leaves a lasting impression. Tastefully erotic, very compelling storyline.. I've recommended this game over and over to my loved ones who have relayed how much this game stuck with them. It's my favorite game of all time.

Catherine Classic is a strange, stylish hybrid: half adult soap-opera, half panic-drenched puzzle platformer. You play Vincent, a 32-year-old who’s drifting through life when a relationship crossroads and a series of surreal nightmares begin to squeeze him from both sides. The game presents itself like a late-night anime drama, but it’s really about what people do when they’re scared—of commitment, of change, of being honest. The story is the main reason to try it, because it commits to uncomfortable topics without turning into pure edgelord material. Conversations in the bar feel intimate and messy, and choices you make in dialogue aren’t just flavor; they shape Vincent’s personality “alignment” and, ultimately, the direction of the plot. It isn’t subtle, and sometimes it’s blunt to the point of being melodramatic, but it’s consistently compelling in a “I should go to sleep, but I need to see what happens next” way. Between story scenes, the Stray Sheep bar works as a surprisingly effective hub. You can talk to regulars, hear their problems, play a little arcade minigame, and slowly realize the themes aren’t limited to Vincent’s love triangle. The writing has that Atlus tendency to mix sincere human moments with sharp humor and a bit of oddness, and the soundtrack helps a lot—jazzy, playful, and occasionally ominous when it needs to be. Then there are the nightmares: block-climbing puzzles where you scramble upward while the floor collapses beneath you. This is where Catherine stops being a narrative game and becomes a genuine skill test. The mechanics are easy to learn—move blocks, create paths, climb—but the difficulty ramps up fast, and late stages can be brutally demanding. When it clicks, it feels incredible: you start seeing solutions, improvising under pressure, and escaping by a single move like you just stole a win from the universe. That said, the difficulty is also the biggest friction point, especially on PC where some people will bounce off at the first real wall. If you want the story but not the sweat, the game gives you options to adjust; if you want the challenge, it absolutely delivers. The tension is intentional and thematically on point—Vincent’s anxiety becomes your anxiety—but it can still be exhausting if you’re not in the mood for repeated attempts. Visually, Catherine Classic holds up better than you might expect. The character art and cutscene style have a bold, graphic look that ages well, and the dream sequences are full of striking imagery and symbolism. The PC version is generally solid and looks clean at higher resolutions, though it still carries the feel of a console-era design in menus and pacing. It’s not modern open-world polish; it’s a focused, theatrical experience. Overall, Catherine Classic is best approached as a confident, slightly chaotic cult game that knows exactly what vibe it wants. If you like narrative choice-driven drama and you can tolerate (or enjoy) punishing puzzles, it’s memorable in a way few games are. It’s flawed, often provocative, sometimes awkward—but it’s also stylish, tense, and weirdly honest about fear and desire, which is why it sticks with people long after the credits.

Is answering 10-20 questions in a confessional to figure out your moral compass while navigating cheating on your "pregnant" girlfriend with a blue eyed E-Girl with the same name as your girlfriend really that bad? Story is fun, puzzles is even better. 7/10. I would play again.
