Aug. 2025
I'm a tram driver in Croatia (Zagreb). The game is solid, but there are some things in it that seem unrealistic to me and kill the immersion a bit. I'm writing from the perspective of both a tram driver and a tram enthusiast. 1) Traffic lights. In 80-90 percent of cases, I have to stop at traffic lights or slow down significantly before them, which is unrealistic. In reality, in Zagreb, I can often catch green traffic lights if I drive at a certain speed on a certain section (more experienced drivers know exactly where, for example, it makes sense to drive 30 km/h to always reach green traffic lights, and where you need to speed up a little). Traffic lights in Zagreb change periodically and you can memorize the phases. That's not the case here. At every traffic light, I'm greeted by red first, and I have the feeling that some of them only change to green when I stop completely and brake the tram, i.e. that the system doesn't recognize when I'm slowly crawling towards the traffic light. When I drive in real life, I often don't brake the tram completely at the traffic lights, but crawl because that way I lose less time and I'm faster, but in the game it seems to me that I'm penalized for this by waiting longer at the traffic lights. Maybe I'm wrong, but traffic lights are certainly unnatural and some are illogical. For example, between two phases of green for my direction, the red phase lasts either too short (just a few seconds?) or too long. Also, sometimes the opposite direction is green, and for me it's not, although there's no reason for that. 2) I would like to be able to set a button on the joystick to open all doors and not be limited to 4/7 seconds before closing the doors. What's the point of having to wait four seconds before turning off the door release if I see that everyone has gotten out, and no one needs to get in because there's no one at the station? In Zagreb, we open all doors at larger stops instead of using door release because it's faster, but in the game it's inconvenient because it doesn't let me rebind a button on the gamepad. Also, what is the point of having to absolutely HAVE to stop and press the door release? In my opinion, if there is no one on the tram and no one at the station (the night lines I like to ride in the game), there is no point in stopping at the station. 3) Speed limits are too high. On some turns, the turning radius is such that 20 km/h is way too much. In Zagreb, on such sharp turns, the official limit is 5 km/h, although the switches are constantly being serviced and so on. Also, the game implies that you can drive 50 km/h below the switch direction change contact, and only at the switch itself is the limit set at 20 km/h. In Zagreb, the switch would not change if you pass under the contact at more than 20 km/h, and if I slow down so much here below the switch contact, I can no longer catch even some rare traffic lights that are designed to be caught. Maybe the principle of turning the switches in Tramau is different than in Zagreb (we have physical contact on the overhead line, which is controlled by a pantograph). 4) Timetables. Probably related to the first point. If I don't drive like a madman, on a moderate or strict timetable it is impossible to arrive on time even though there is no traffic on the street, but I am held up by traffic lights. Also, regarding traffic jams: it seems to me that there is always traffic jams in the opposite direction from where I am going, which is unrealistic. In the opposite direction I see 10 cars waiting at the traffic lights, and in my direction there is always one or two. If I am late, it would be realistic to be late because of the traffic jams, like in Zagreb, and not because the traffic lights have been holding me up for years. 5) The situation at the tram roundabouts. When one tram stops behind another and waits for departure, it no longer moves back even though the first tram has left. This creates a traffic jam at the tram roundabout and I can no longer get to the platform to let passengers off the tram. A pretty stupid problem that is not solved, and makes the game frustrating. Another thing about leaving the tram roundabout: if I choose to skip the wait, the tram in front of me starts at the same time as me instead of teleporting to the place where it should be according to its schedule. It turns out that the tram in front of me and I are on the same schedule. This is a more important problem than adding new vehicles, and it is not solved. 6) AI trams drive even faster over roundabouts, switches, etc. than the limit is, even though the limit itself is too high. Especially some models rush along the track as if the devil is chasing them. 7) AI traffic (cars). It happens to me that AI cars do a brake check at traffic lights. It's green, I start, they probably don't like that I started too fast and then brake until I brake, only when they see that I brake - they start. Crazy. They also sometimes honk even though there is no reason for it. On one section, two stops near the turnoff on line 7, cars push in front of the tram even though the tram should have priority. AI trams also drive robotically. 8) On some lines, the tram derails at some switches (Flexity Wien) even though it is traveling at less than the speed limit. For example, I drive 15 km/h at a switch and it derails. It has never been fixed, which shows that the developers don't play the game at all. 9) Behavior that would be punished in real life in Zagreb is not punished. For example, using sand on a switch or constantly braking hard. Driving like a maniac is encouraged, which is not in the spirit of the simulation. It's also a shame that the switches, for example, never break, in reality they can break and you have to turn them manually. I miss more gameplay mechanics, and fewer new vehicles. The game would be better if these things were fixed. :)

I'm recommending this on the stipulation that it's probably the best current option of what's out there. With the announcement of adding buses in a week (and having AI buses in traffic), this sim platform is about to surpass the only other bus sims out there. There are bugs and the usual jank you get with these kinds of simulators; some of which can be irritating and some can be game breaking. But I have to recommend on the sole basis that this is the best option against the competition. If you want trains or subways, obviously there's better options. But for on-road driving/transit, unless you want to deal with the extended jank of OMSI, this is probably the 'best' potential option for you.

Im a tram driver IRL and this game has the best driving physics of all the tram simulators I have played and I like the interactive cockpits, Another thing I love about the game is realistic tram signs and tram lights. They are the same real signs I look for IRL when Im driving tram.
