I've had a disc copy of this game since its original release, so my hours are maybe a tenth of what they should be. CivCity Rome is a take on the supply chain and "walker" style city building games ala Caesar and to a lesser extent Anno. You might think that you need to keep your citizens with food and clothes to make them not starve or freeze to death, but you can more importantly tax a well-fed and clothed man more than a starving naked one. But how do you make that bread or toga? Well you need another guy out in the field growing wheat or flax, and then a third guy working in a shop baking bread or sewing togas (why you'd need to sew a garment that's just a sheet is a bit beyond me), but then those guys also need bread and togas, and maybe also some olive oil to go with the bread could be nice, but the presser said he wanted some wine, and the vintner is an adherent to Poseidon Neptune, so he'll need a temple to that guy, but with the priest moving in at the edge of the city he can't reach the bakery, so we'll need a second one of those. And so on and so on until you've more or less re-built Rome just because you wanted three denarii more in taxes from your starving plebeians. It's an addictive cycle and it's quite delightful to see your little hovels turn in to vast manors. Again if you like Anno or Caesar, this game is rather similar but still unique enough to have its own appeal. One funny aspect of this game is that each individual is tracked, so you know exactly which house the well-worker or glass-blower lives in, but to my recollection, their status in the world has nothing to do with the work they do, only the resources they have access to. This usually leads to my well-workers, butchers and farmers being the patricians living in their own villa-communities, whereas priests and skilled artisans live in the slums, all because the well-worker was there first, so his house was placed in the middle of the city where all the resources congregate, and the artisan with his speciality goods was only needed later, so his house was placed on the outskirts, far away from anything other than dirt and dirt-coloured houses.

This is a game from my childhood that I am so glad I found on Steam. I actually came looking for this because during my last move I found the old disk and remembered how much I loved to play. This is the game that really launched my interest in city and empire building games. Personally, I still find it a lot of fun despite it's age and think it has held up well. It can be a bit buggy sometimes, as others have mentioned, but it hasn't been too bad for me.

It's hard to tell whether this game is really good or I'm just nostalgic. 8/10, it's kinda buggy.

I absolutely love this game, and I cannot stress that enough. There is so much to do and so many upgrades for houses, research to do. Just playing with one settlement you can be working on it for weeks. This really is the ultimate city builder game for me.

I had a lot of fun playing this game, although I ended up putting it on silent as the noises were getting annoying. Trying to play this game in 2025 was tricky. I found it would frequently glitch and the only way to fix the issue of people not going to work was to uninstall and reinstall the game every time. In the end this stopped my playing binge of this game. Although I will definitely play it again one day.
