Children of the Nile is a much more relaxed city builder than games like Frostpunk, Caesar, Pharaoh, Zeus, or even Against the Storm. There are no roguelike mechanics or constant pressure—it's simply about building and managing an Ancient Egyptian civilization across roughly twenty campaign scenarios. Difficulty varies from easy to hard, making it accessible to a wide audience without ever becoming overwhelmingly difficult. The game's biggest strength is how alive its society feels. Instead of placing anonymous workers, you manage an actual social hierarchy. Farmers produce food, priests provide healthcare and religious services, scribes collect taxes and manage trade, overseers supervise construction and resource gathering, commanders train armies, and many other professions all play their own role in keeping the kingdom running. Prestige is a central mechanic. Building monuments, pyramids, obelisks, statues, and temples isn't just for decoration—it allows your civilization to grow and unlock more high-ranking citizens. The economy is also unique, with merchants, workshops, world map trade, and local production chains all interacting in ways that make the city feel organic rather than mechanical. There are, however, some weaknesses. Certain buildings and professions feel underdeveloped or unnecessary. Exchanges, guard posts, gardeners, servants, and even tariff collection often seem to have little impact on gameplay. Shrines can also behave oddly, with citizens requesting worship but refusing to use nearby shrines even when priests are present. The military system works well most of the time, but raids occasionally bug out, leaving enemy units stuck in a "deciding what to do" loop. Population growth can also become frustratingly limited on some maps. I also wish there were more decorative options. Ancient Egypt offers an enormous variety of monuments and statues, but the game includes only a relatively small selection. More visual variety would have made city building even more rewarding. Despite those issues, the game remains incredibly charming. The soundtrack is excellent, the citizens interact with each other in amusing ways, and it's easy to lose hours watching your city develop. Even today, its mechanics still feel unique compared to most city builders. If you're looking for a calm, rewarding city-building game with a distinctive take on Ancient Egypt, Children of the Nile is absolutely worth playing—especially considering how inexpensive it usually is. For me, it's an easy 8/10. Nostalgia certainly plays a part, but even without it, this is still one of the more unique city builders ever made.

LOVE IT! Played since its release and often replay the game, love being a pharoah, and love egypt in general, not really had issues with it, runs at 4k fine and its probably one of the best egyptian city builders i know, highly recommend it

I couldnt get into this game much until I installed the 3x walk speed hack. It really seems a lot of the game's bugs have to do with sims picks non optimal destinations and end up stuck somewhere. Making them walk faster has solved all the problems for me. The game does become significantly easier with the patch but city builder games are never difficult to play to begin with...
