Old school gaming at its best, no tutorials, no hints, no arrows pointing you what to do next, a real challenge especially if you make it to the last few levels. Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is an enjoyable game even for today's standards. 10/10 recommended.

The launch of the Euro, the Monica Lewinksy scandal, Beckham's red card, Geri leaving the spice girls; 1998 was a pivotal year in cultural terms. It also marked the release of RTS stealth-em-up Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, a game that influenced countless future releases and which proved a surprising commercial success, surprisingly so in countries with a history of fascism. I remember playing this game as a child, and what a difficult game it was. At times overwhelming, frequently infuriating; viewed through the modern lens this game often feels like an exercise in trial and error. Where exactly does the decoy need to be placed to attract the attention of this guard? Do I have time to sneak through this space before the solider's cone of vision washes over the Green Beret? The game does little to assist you and its often a case of try, fail, reload. The quick save key is your most powerful weapon, the clumsy controls your most potent enemy. Stick with it, however, and the satisfaction you obtain from completing a mission is unparalleled, even by modern standards. I returned to this game in the 2020s primarily because of nostalgia. Anxiously waiting for your footsteps to fade in the snow, the crunchy snap of the Sapper's man trap, rationing your sniper's bullets; all fond memories. The game was just a bit too hard for a 12-year-old. Completing it 27 years later was enjoyably cathartic. Would I recommend this game to a new player? Probably not. A veteran might well enjoy returning to the game even if it were for no other reason than to indulge one's sentimentality. 2025

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines remains, even two decades on, one of the most satisfying and intelligent real-time tactics experiences ever released. From the moment you land on the occupied French coast, you’re plunged into a series of intricately designed missions that demand creativity, patience, and genuine strategic thinking. Rather than overwhelming you with explosive firepower, the game encourages the classic commando virtues—stealth, deception, and precise timing—rewarding players who observe enemy patterns, exploit the environment, and coordinate their small squad with military precision. Each of the six specialists at your command—ranging from the nimble Spy and the demolitions-savvy Sapper to the sharpshooting Sniper—brings unique abilities that feel both distinct and essential. Learning to combine these talents is deeply satisfying: feinting a patrol with the Green Beret’s knock-out knife, using the Spy’s uniform to infiltrate a garrison, and then having the Sniper cover your escape from a guard tower. The level design is consistently thoughtful, offering multiple routes, optional objectives, and rewarding exploration. This open-ended structure gives you the freedom to craft your own approaches while still feeling the tension and satisfaction of pulling off complex operations behind enemy lines. Visually, the game’s isometric vistas—though modest by modern standards—have a clean, functional clarity that keeps every hiding spot, guard route, and piece of scenery immediately legible. The audio design likewise hits exactly the right notes, from the satisfying *thwap* of a silenced pistol to the distant rumble of artillery. All these elements combine into an experience that never feels unfair: failures are almost always the result of oversight, rushed planning, or a misread patrol pattern, and each successful breakout or objective completion delivers a genuine rush of accomplishment. In short, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines still stands as a masterclass in small-unit tactics gameplay. It’s a game that trusts its players to think, adapt, and learn—and in return, it delivers some of the most thrilling, understated victories you’re likely to find in any strategy title. Whether you’re revisiting it for nostalgia’s sake or discovering its clever challenges for the first time, it remains an essential classic.
