For this one I'll write 2 reviews: 1 For new gamers: 8 of 10. Operation Galuga is a entertaining game. It takes a couple of hours to complete but it has some replayability value. Grab it on sale (about 10 - 15 usd would be a fair price) if you like arcade games. 2 As a Contra fan: 6.5 of 10. Wait, what? well, I think this Contra fails short for a Contra game made with modern resources. Either this was made as a mobile game or they aimed for a low budget development expecting big profits coming from brand name and nostalgia. I've played the game for about 16 hours already so it's not like I hate it however, I feel it could be better in some areas.. lets see: a) controls Ok for the most part. Analog stick allows you to aim on any direction which is a good thing. My issues: - crouch: d-pad is faster. you will notice this when you want to dodge a bullet in short notice - gun overload takes some time. I'd like to have a setting for it to be instantaneous. Don't worry, If I hit the button by mistake that's my problem b) gameplay This feels like a Contra game. with a few quirks: - weak soldiers do not die with a single shot. This breaks the 'run and gun' formula at some places to make Contra a 'walk and aim' game. I don't love this - auto grab to ceilings. Alien Wars had this and there it was ok. Here, it can break the pace or make you take damage. I would like to have full control between doing a normal jump vs jumping to hang up ceilings - no bomb. man this is heavily missed from contra 3. Bombs could save your ass on tricky conditions! well, not here. Also, the 2 weapon 'victory' pose is gone. Not actually very useful but it was cool c) chars Having several chars is a good thing. But they get treated unevenly. Some chars get less hit points, some cannot double jump, and some are slower (not great for a fast paced action game). Also, some weapons change (for worse) depending on which char you are using... and Grapple is not great to have for the most part. It feels like game was designed for Lance and Bill so, playing with other chars can put you on disadvantage at some points d) weapons Classic weapons are here but, damage-wise, they do not feel more powerful. An enemy can take 3 shots from the default rifle, M gun or even Laser. Weapon overload... this is a good mechanic however, some overloads can either be godlike or pretty much useless depending on what you are fighting. New weapon types would be nice to have e) boss fights Ok for the most part. Some of the later bosses will attack you with hard-to-dodge moves which can feel unfair (until you memorize boss patterns). Having the 'right' weapon will make fights easier but the opposite is also true: being there with a 'wrong' weapon can make the boss fight harder e) graphics In-game graphics are ok. My main complain is that sometimes it can be hard to see where you are and you can get hit/killed because of that. History mode graphics feel low budget, specially the ending sequence. Contra in 2024 deserves better. Some char animations, and bike stage transitions do not feel as smooth as they should be. f) music New music is bland. Nothing to write home about here. But you can unlock old game music which is much, much better. g) stages Stages are ok for Bill and Lance but you can struggle with other characters. I hated a couple of things: 1 the stage with the green crystals where you can't see yourself directly 2 the climbing sequence near the end... annoying if you don't have a spare L gun And no top view stages. Those would be good to have g) story / dialogue Voice acting is ok, but some dialogue can feel uninspired or even a bit dumb. History is ok, not epic but not terrible either h) other Sometimes loading stage1 takes a long time (10 seconds or more) to start for no reason... (unless they wanted to simulate ps1 load times) On summary: This Contra is an ok game, but, for the full asking price it should be better (grab it on sale). The game is not exactly a remake or a remaster; they took a lot of things from old Contra games and mixed them all together in a new Contra game. While some things can be improved, I think Contra fans will have fun with this game.

Who would have thought, an actually decent Contra game. As good as this is, this is honestly still really jank, not particularly pleasing to look at or even very long. I'd suggest waiting for a discount if you're the mood for some Contra and then having a few hours of fun.

Contra Operation Galuga is a true hommage to the earlier Contra games. After 100% the Contra Collection, i thought it was time for Galuga. The levels, the bosses.. such an amazing detail. With some of the min-bosses from older games, to complete new bosses. Together with challenges, speedrun mode and for the true diehards an insane difficulty mode. This game had me entertained for 28 hours till 100% achievement. I still have to do some challenges. Get the game on sale, and if you're a fan, you will have the time of your life. Together with nowadays PC's having enough USB ports, you can play up to a team of 4. Very fun with friends, although some may complain about not getting the good weapons haha. Highly recommended!!

If you approach it as "I'm going to play a new version of the original Contra games for the NES and SNES" it does its job perfectly. If you approach it expecting a modern gaming experience with a multitude of complex mechanics and a deep story you're going to be sorely disappointed. It's just a prettier version of the OG games with a less punishing difficulty and a simple story slapped on top that somewhat fleshes out the original game's barely-there plot but remains pretty basic. I liked that it attempts to incorporate characters and plot points from many different Contra games across the decades and it sets up a sequel that seems to be based on Contra III: The Alien Wars for the SNES. I did like it, but I think even its price at 50% off is too much to ask for a game this basic that seems to be built upon the idea that you're going play it a million times in order to be able to unlock more characters and perks that don't really offer much in the way of variety. I finished story mode in a little over two hours and all that's left is replay the game, which is a pretty basic run & gun that starts feeling repetitive even at the tail end of a first play-through, so I honestly don't see why you'd re-play it or play the arcade mode or the challenges over and over again to slowy accumulate points for the unlockables in the perk store. It's just not fun enough to have any real replay value, IMO.

Great remake, but too expensive for quite small amount of gameplay
