10/10 - This game has done a better job capturing my early 2000's arcade rush then most of my library. Everything about it is fun and enjoyable. Highly Recommend.

Where do I even begin? If a Cave-style arcade STG is what you're after: this is the peak. Nothing has been said about this game which hasn't already been said. Crimzon Clover is comfortably the best STG there is on PC. Made with the crystal clear and intense vision of one man (STG superplayer Clover-TAC) and executed to razor-sharp perfection, it has no faults. Crimzon Clover has a bit of a reputation for being nightmarishly difficult, and for good reason. "Be humble, start on novice;" is a comment I will never forget. And yet there will be people who will find even Novice Original challenging; though this is what makes Crimzon Clover so great. You see, it isn't actually all that tricky to mindlessly make a difficult game. What Crimzon Clover does exceedingly well however is its ability to be both nightmarishly difficult and outlandishly fun and addictive. Throughout my 335-hour journey with Crimzon Clover -- from Novice, to Arrange ("Medium"-ish), to Arcade Original, Arcade Boost, and eventually Arcade Unlimited -- there were definitely times when I wondered what in the heck I had gotten myself into. But what kept me on track for my eventual 1CC in Arcade Unlimited was the fact that there were just so many enjoyable moments which made its relentless difficulty immensely rewarding and even somewhat calming to confront. Yep, you read that right. In a way which I cannot yet describe how or even why; I find this game zen. It has taught me peace, it has taught me tranquility, and it has taught me how to calm my nerves. When I finally reached the TLB in Arcade Unlimited, I sat in front of my screen as calm and as composed as a monk. I did not shake, I did not sweat, my heart rate was at a comfortable resting rate; I was zen. This was a first for me, and this is how you beat this game. Like many other players, it used to be perfectly normal for my heart to start racing as I approached the finish line for that prestigious 1CC. And in Crimzon Clover especially, an STG which is almost 35 minutes long on a good day, there is a lot to be nervous about. With very little room for error however, even the tiniest twitch from an ounce of panic or nervousness can finish you. And this is how I eventually accepted that being calm and following the wind was the only way I could do this. Obviously however Crimzon Clover's aesthetics will not be for everyone; but this is somewhat to be expected for a game which for all intents and purposes is a true-to-the-heart arcade experience. There will be a lot of explosions everywhere, there will be a seemingly infinite number of stars flying all over the screen, there will be an endless stream of score multipliers, numbers, rates -- you name it -- appearing everywhere and all at once; Crimzon Clover is an extremely visually intense game. This is something you either love or hate; though for me it is a crucial part of the arcade experience: that immediate explosive reward when you do that one thing right, even when in the face of inevitable doom and failure. And I love it. Coupled with immensely fun boss fights, extremely well choreographed levels and enemy placements, and an absolute banger of a soundtrack, these are the qualities which made my long and treacherous journey with Crimzon Clover so endurable and fun. If there's one gameplay feature I wish to bring special attention to: it's its shot system. Many STG's kinda have a reputation for encouraging players to keep the (wide) shot button held down (jokingly with a brick); not so with Crimzon Clover. Not only are you often encouraged to spam your lock-on (focus) shot, you are also encouraged to release your wide shot in order to kill enemies with lock-on to build the lock-on multiplier. Crimzon Clover is the only modern STG (with an auto-fire) where my shot fingers tire out. The only (somewhat mild) criticism I have of Crimzon Clover is its difficulty progression can be a little confusing for newcomers. Very basically, you have three difficulty tiers (with each having their own modes with some being harder than others); those are: Novice, Arrange and Arcade. Arrange is somewhat of an odd-ball as it's marketed as being the "medium" difficulty mode, which it is, but that doesn't quite tell the full story. That's because Arrange plays completely differently to Novice and Arcade with its own unique on-the-fly ship upgrade system, dynamic rank, and scoring items. Thus going from Novice to Arrange to Arcade can be a little disorientating, but it is what it is, and Arrange is certainly a lot of fun. What a game; what an experience; and what a roller-coaster of a ride this was. Thank you so much for this masterpiece. <3

The more you get into this game, the more you see how every part was precisely designed to allow for an insane skill ceiling. Plus the novice mode is really nice

The occipital lobe of the human brain takes approximately 18% of the total space and is dedicated largely to visual processing. This game is fully aware of and exploits that fact. Take that as you will.

Wish the game didnt sync system settings or had a toggle to not sync that to steam. Playing on PC and Steamdeck sucks with it on as the display settings need to be changed every time I swap machines. Thankfully, the game doesnt really have any sort of progression that really needs syncing so I just leave it off. Im also turbo casual if you couldnt tell by the hours so there is that. Fun game. Overall recommended.
