Do NOT buy this game ... yet. Even after 5 hefty bug squashing hotfixes, this game is absolutely riddled with severe, game breaking bugs. I have a pretty high resistance to bugs - neither Bethesda or Eurojank have ever bothered me, but Crown of Greed has critical bugs in almost every mission that prevents the ability to complete a side or sometimes even main quest. The level of bugs is so high, it simply isn't possble for any QA or dev to have played their own game and not run into these issues constantly, and they still decided to ship the game. As an example every second match without fail, will result in a bug where the game is paused and cannot be unpaused and the only fix is to alt + f4. Every second time I launch a mission. Outside of the bugs there is an absolutely fantastic Majesty-like. I'd say the best, and that is before factoring in how much potential is here with the systems already in place that could be fleshed out further. I adore the graphical style, the visuals and the animations are also excellent. Lights turning on and off, structural damage and minor actions taking place all over the buildings. Compared to Majesty or the other recent Majesty-Like on the market, Lessaria (good game, check it out!), each hero has randomised positive and negative traits and a much wider selection of gear to purchase - aritfacts, accessories, around a dozen different consumables. You also get access to a larger pool of hero classes and towers to use, and a large variety of enemies to battle against. I'd keep this game on the wishlist for now now and check back in from time to time, unless you are really keen on scratching that Majesty itch and are willing to deal with a criminal level of bugs. But if you can look or get past it's issues there is a fantastic game here and I hope the devs continue to push out hotfixes and get the game into a playable state.
Majesty is one of my favorite games of all time, so I seem to be cursed to always look at the Majesty-alikes in my vain attempts to find a game as good. How does Crown of Greed fare? After playing it for a bit, I'd say it's roughly on par with Lessaria, maybe a little better. That is to say, it's significantly better than Majesty 2, but still not as good as the first Majesty. My opinion: Pros: - Heroes take more initiative compared to Majesty 2, rangers explore the map and heroes find enemies to kill. - The meta-progression of building your own town for upgrades is pretty neat. - Each scenario has three difficulty levels with increasing meta-progression rewards, good for replaying. - Hero designs are pretty good overall, they look and feel interesting. - Crown of Greed's writing seems to be less jokey, which is nice after Majesty 2 and Lessaria had every hero spouting memes and references nonstop. Cons: - While showing more initiative, they still fall short in this regard to Majesty 1. Heroes don't seem to ever attack lairs on their own, for example. - Similarly, heroes lack a lot of the "mechanical personality" that heroes of Majesty 1 had. No heroes naturally buddying up, not much of heroes doing unique actions for flavor, etc. Like Majesty 2, Crown of Greed fails to be a "fantasy kingdom sim" in favor of just being an RTS with indirect control. - Unlocking new heroes is very slow and uninteresting, you just get one new one every map, which leads the later heroes with less game to play. - No factions, no mutually exclusive hero choices. I know some people will consider this a pro, but for me this is a major con because maps end up playing the same as you utilize the same heroes with the same strategy every map. - No freestyle mode, no random maps. Ouch. I think on the actual scenario play it's probably the best of the "Majesty likes". I'll give it a recommend because of that, but ultimately Crown of Greed is still another game that fundamentally shows a lack of understanding of Majesty and can't recapture that magic. Still worth some time, though.
Alright… let’s be fair here. This game is genuinely good, and the developers are clearly putting in the effort to squash those game-breaking bugs. Credit where credit is due—they’re not ignoring the issues. On top of that, the price sits at around €20, which is honestly refreshing in a world where games seem to cost as much as a small utility bill. That said, I completely understand the mixed reviews. There *are* bugs, and some of them can make progressing through the campaign… let’s say “creatively challenging.” When your biggest enemy isn’t a monster but a glitch, it’s fair that people get frustrated. But underneath those issues is a really solid game. It feels like a true successor to the *Majesty* series with a witty advisor, an engaging narrative, and missions that are actually fun to play. The unit variety is strong, and there’s enough going on to keep things interesting. If you’re looking for something to relax with (and don’t mind the occasional hiccup), it’s a great addition to your library. One thing I’d love to see added—like in the *Majesty* games. Is clearer progression for your heroes, especially visually with their armor and weapons. Watching your heroes evolve would add a lot to the experience. And honestly, I’d happily dive back in for future expansions. More maps, more units, and definitely more monsters. To the developers: keep up the good work. Fixing bugs isn’t glamorous, but it måtter and you’ve built something really worth sticking with 👍
Now just a few days after I wrote the review below, the dev addressed/patched the issues that I was having. It seems like they are trying to be very active at addressing problems. Based on this I can recommend buying this one if you like Lessaria and Majesty games. 21 hours in and I have a very short review. My advice is to WAIT. This should be great and should scratch that itch like Lessaria did, but it's not ready. The bugs aren't super common but when you find them they are very game breaking and if it doesn't end your run, it will end your fun. I'm not going to thumbs down it (yet) as everything I've seen is fixable and probably not extremely difficult to fix even. As it is, I had about 10 hours of fun and 11 hours of frustration. Now I'll wait for an update. If it doesn't happen pretty soon then I'll switch mine to a negative to match most of the recent ones that I've read. If it gets patched and you see reviews that are positive and talking of fixes, then buy it at that time 100%.
I have been waiting for this game for quite a long time. After playing one scenario on normal and hard difficulty, these are my observations. Positives: - Very well thought tutorial - Intuitive UI, very similar to original game - On normal difficulty, easy progression, not abrupt or too rushed - Fantastic graphics and no performance issues Negatives: - Units get stuck in place in random places and nothing can unstuck them short of death. They cannot interact or even defend themselves while stuck - Camera movement feels very sluggish - Jumping from Normal to Hard difficulty, the game gets really aggressive and makes you rush. Too big of a difference from normal - When forming parties at the inn, heroes already on quests will accept the party invitation, but never show up to the inn to form the party until his quest is complete. This makes the rest of the heroes waiting at the inn forever. I suggest making the party formation a priority - After a party is being formed, they do not tend to stick together consistently and confusing when accepting quests as a party Despite the long list of negatives, the game feels and plays beautifully! I am sure there will be loads of patches coming so I wish the devs all the luck and do not overexert yourselves!
