The game is great if you install The Wheel mod. It allows you to skip to the next completion; it turns Cultist Simulator into a turn-based game instead of a quick-time-event galore. I would've burned out long ago if I didn't use this mod. Please read the instructions on how to install it on the mod page. I'll put a copy here just in case: 1. In the Workshop, navigate to The Wheel mod. Don't subscribe for it yet. First, subscribe the GHIRBI mod from the developers that is the prerequisite for the Wheel. It allows the DLL mods, and The Wheel is such a mod. 2 Restart the game, 3. In the main menu, in the Sixth Hour menu on the upper-right, enable the GHIRBI mod. 4. Close the game. 5. In the Workshop, subscribe to The Wheel mod. 6. Launch the game and enable the Whell in the Sixth Hour menu. 7. Restart the game. You should have new hotkeys in the Keys menu in Settings. 8. Set your hotkeys. I chose Q for skipping until next verb and R for skipping until next decay. The hotkeys will look weird with the "Keyboard" prefix, but they will work. 9. Restart the game. Otherwise the reassigned hotkeys might not work.

FOR STEAM DECK USERS: Despite this game being listed as "Verified," it should really be marked "Playable." The board is impossible to comprehend at any zoom level on the Steam Deck screen. The thumb stick is used as a mouse cursor stand-in. Not ideal.

Cultist Simulator is very deep. I don't necessarily mean that in the complexity of its ideas, although there is plenty to think about, but in terms of how much is hiding beneath the surface. You can play this game without reading anything but the tutorials and achieve a good level of mechanical competence, but the true fun of this game is in diving into the scraps of lore handed to you through ambiguous item descriptions. It's kind of like Dark Souls in that way, not to compare everything to DS but in terms of how lore is handled it is similar. I don't need to tell you how tedious and grindy this game can be, and that is definitely the worst aspect of it, but I don't necessarily think the game would be better if it was more streamlined. Part of the experience is slogging through it, this slow descent, and if all the lore and mechanics were just handed to you in a 20 minute tutorial + exposition it would lose all of its magic. Cultist Simulator is a great game that has a large, necessary flaw. If you have a lot of time on your hands and are willing to see it through, you'll love it. If the idea of wading through hours of grinding to get a few more scraps of lore fills you with dread, I'd pass on it.

Overall its a good game, but is definitely not for everyone. I have put in a good amount of time and it can be pretty addictive once you start figuring out that path you want to take, but it does take a bit to figure out what you are supposed to be doing and why/how. Once you find your rhythm though, this game has wonderful charm and mystery. I know they have the warning that there is no tutorial, but I do think the game would benefit from having some kind of direction to help new players. Trial and error that causes multiple restarts of a whole run is not my personal favorite way of learning. But I have enjoyed the game for the most part and will be checking out other titles from this developer.
