Dead Age, developed by Silent Dreams and published by Headup, is a distinctive fusion of survival management, turn-based combat, and roguelike progression, all set in a grim world overrun by the undead. Rather than chasing the high-octane thrills of typical zombie shooters, it takes a slower, more strategic approach, tasking players with the daily grind of survival—balancing resources, protecting survivors, and making moral decisions that determine who lives and who dies. It is a game that rewards careful planning and measured risk-taking, but also punishes complacency and poor luck. Every decision carries weight, and in its best moments, Dead Age succeeds in capturing the sense of dread, desperation, and fleeting hope that defines the zombie apocalypse. The game begins with the player awakening to find civilization in ruins and the dead walking the earth. You quickly find shelter in a survivor camp, where you are introduced to the game’s central systems. From this hub, you can assign jobs to survivors, manage supplies, and prepare scavenging expeditions into the dangerous world beyond. The camp management aspect is one of Dead Age’s defining features. Survivors can be tasked with crafting, healing, guarding, or scavenging, and the efficiency of your base depends on how well you distribute limited manpower. Resources are scarce—food, ammunition, and medicine must be carefully rationed—and the daily routine of keeping everyone alive becomes a compelling cycle of tension and reward. The constant need to make hard choices—whether to risk a wounded survivor on a scavenging mission or conserve supplies for the next day—imbues the game with a persistent feeling of pressure that never quite lets up. Outside the safety of the camp, exploration takes on a turn-based structure. Each scavenging mission involves a series of random encounters that can range from discovering valuable loot to battling hostile survivors or hordes of zombies. The combat system itself draws inspiration from traditional RPG design, presenting a side-view, turn-based battle arena where positioning, resource management, and timing play crucial roles. Characters have access to melee and ranged weapons, each with its own strengths and drawbacks. Ammo is precious, healing items are limited, and every skirmish carries the risk of injury or death. Combat is not flashy, but it is deliberate, emphasizing attrition over spectacle. The tension in these battles comes from knowing that every bullet fired or medkit used is one less resource for the next encounter. Mistakes accumulate, fatigue sets in, and the line between survival and disaster becomes razor-thin. Dead Age also incorporates a roguelike progression system that ensures each failure contributes to eventual success. When your group inevitably collapses under the weight of hunger, infection, or violence, your run ends, but you carry forward medals and experience that unlock new classes, bonuses, and starting advantages for future playthroughs. This loop transforms failure into progress, encouraging experimentation and risk-taking rather than punishing it outright. It also adds replayability, since no two runs play out exactly the same—randomized events, shifting alliances, and emergent storylines give each playthrough a slightly different flavor. While repetition does set in after many hours, the unpredictability of outcomes keeps the game engaging enough to encourage one more attempt at survival. Narratively, Dead Age opts for a grounded, character-driven approach rather than a sweeping plot. The story unfolds gradually through conversations, radio transmissions, and random encounters, with an overarching goal of finding the protagonist’s sister amid the chaos. Along the way, you meet various factions and individuals, each with their own motives and moral shades. Choices often come with trade-offs—helping one group may alienate another, and acts of compassion can easily lead to catastrophe. These narrative decisions are rarely black-and-white, which lends a layer of realism to the game’s post-apocalyptic tone. The moral ambiguity feels authentic, reinforcing the idea that in a world where death is constant, survival sometimes demands compromise. However, for all its ambition, Dead Age shows its limitations as a small-scale indie project. The visuals are modest, relying on simple 3D models and static backgrounds that get the job done without ever impressing. The interface can be cumbersome, with frequent menu navigation that slows down the pacing. Repetition also becomes an issue over long sessions; the core gameplay loop—scavenge, fight, return, repeat—can feel mechanical after a while, especially once you’ve seen most of the event variations. Some combat encounters lack variety, and the turn-based system, while solid, never evolves significantly as you progress. Difficulty balancing is another weak spot; luck often plays as much a role as strategy, with random events occasionally dealing unavoidable damage or wiping out progress through bad rolls rather than player error. Despite these flaws, Dead Age manages to maintain a compelling sense of survival tension throughout. Its design encourages players to think ahead, weigh every resource, and consider every choice with care. There’s a palpable satisfaction in surviving one more day, returning from a dangerous scavenging run with just enough food to keep the camp alive, or crafting a new weapon that gives your team a slight edge. These small victories make the hardships worthwhile, and they capture the emotional rhythm of living through a collapse—where progress is measured not in triumphs, but in the ability to endure another sunrise. The roguelike structure further amplifies this sense of persistence, transforming death from a defeat into an opportunity for learning and improvement. In the broader landscape of zombie-themed games, Dead Age stands out for its hybrid structure and commitment to strategic survival over spectacle. It lacks the polish and visual grandeur of big-budget titles, but it compensates with thoughtful systems, tough moral choices, and a genuine sense of consequence. The game’s strength lies in its capacity to make the player feel the fragility of life in a world gone wrong. Every scavenging run, every decision about who to heal or who to risk, builds a narrative of struggle that is uniquely your own. While its rough edges and repetitive pacing may limit its appeal for some, those willing to embrace its harsh rhythm will find a surprisingly deep and rewarding survival RPG that captures the human cost of endurance in the face of apocalypse. I've put 35 hours into it, so I must have enjoyed it. Dead Age is a turn based combat (which does get stale quickly), party management RPG with some well implemented qualities in the background. There are multiple endings (I won't be chasing them all) and some decent twists and turns as the story progresses. It's a real challenge on the normal level, but if you want to get through the story and see what the game has to offer, there is a Casual Difficulty. It's probably better than it has any right to be and I will play the sequel at some point.

Upside: gameplay is awesome ! I really enjoy this one. Geuinely love the mix of turn based tactics and base mangement. Always wanted a zombie game like this Downside: Characters are very one-dimensional and boring, with generally a single personality trait. A bit disapointing for a sub-genre that generally focuses on character development and phsycological horror Very fun, though! One of those games that you should buy if it looks interesting to you, because what you see is pretty much adverstised.
