DEADBOLT, Hopoo's second game, is a potent mixture of stealth, action, planning and improvisation. You play as the reaper and the undead are not only infesting the city, but forming aesthetically cohesive criminal gangs. This cannot be allowed to continue, so it's your job to send them back to where they belong. Each level is a safehouse full of goons that need to be put to rest, but given your frailty and limited resources you've got to be clever about how you clean the place out. Sometimes you need to be stealthy, quietly taking out the enemies before reaching a point where action takes over at which point you beat the door down take cover and gun the opposition down. You're very mobile: being able to enter from multiple places, go through vents and pipes and the houses are open enough to let you run circles around the opposition, knocking off lone stragglers and elite enemies before vanishing away. The game looks great with clean, readable pixel art and a dynamic blood splatter system that leaves your massacre painted on the level walls. The moody atmosphere and style matched by Chris Christodoulou's exceptional soundtrack. Each gang has it's own musical styling and theme, and uniquely each song in the game contains the main characters little leitmotif hidden in there. It is, in my opinion, one of the strongest and most thematic OSTs written for a game in recent memory. Downright grungy, DEADBOLT pulls few punches and answers fewer questions. Being quick on your feet is the only way to survive. The night is long and the reaper has quite a job ahead of him. I highly recommend DEADBOLT to fans of action games.
An insanely underrated game from the same guys that made Risk of Rain. It's creative and very challenging - but also quite short. The soundtrack is amazing, Chris really knows his stuff. It's got some story to it, which gets interesting but it's not very developed. Most things die with one headshot which sends blood flying all over the walls - makes you feel like some kind of John Wick haha. Good luck if you want to 100% the game though...some achievements are hard as ♥♥♥♥. There's custom levels you can download from the workshop but I didn't really care about them - played one and it was kinda buggy and I gave up. Totally worth it, you should give it a shot.
i recently saw the 10 year anniversary update and remembered how much i liked this game as a teenager and decided to revisit it and i'm happy to report it still very much holds up! gameplay feels like a perfect blend between strategy and action and the soundtrack is fantastic! the only real criticism i have is that the campaign is quite short but that problem is easily mended by a very well made new game+ mode as well as tons of great community made workshop levels. all i have left to say is deadbolt 2 when?
Frustratingly difficult game, I kinda gave up at the second Vampire chapter of the game. There isn't much of a story to speak of either. It is pure puzzle-ish Hotline Miami gameplay but there appears to be some randomness baked into the enemy behaviors which ends up making it frustrating to complete a level. You can be doing the same thing over and over again and just get different results. I am giving it a thumbs up though, because I see the intent and production quality behind the game. Just be warned that it is not a game for everyone. The soundtrack is amazing though, that is kind of worth the money I spent on the game.
