June 2025
A somewhat basic pulp-action puzzler/shooter that makes up in charm what it lacks in polish. You take on the role of Allan Quatermain's two-fisted, treasure-hunting great-grandson -- James, or something -- who gets employed by some globe-trotting G-Men in a race against Nazis, searching for a mythical treasure. They need your granddaddy's magical compass to help them find the loot -- and that's what you get to use it for, too. Treasures provide upgrade opportunities, so there's incentive to buff up. Those are the extent of the exploration mechanics, but that's not to say it isn't fun. The worst aspect is that progress saves are limited to checkpoints, and that can amount to re-collecting 4 or more treasures after an unceremonious misstep into a deadly environmental trap. . . of which there are plenty! You can carry up-to-3 weapons at a time -- your akimbo pistols, a rifle of some type, and a ranged explosive -- in addition to thrown grenades or similar. The gunplay & weapon variety is meant to be the spice, so pick up and use the stuff that's scattered about. Use your inherited notepad to get clues to solve puzzles & avoid traps. The game will give you a prompt. The voice-acting of our protagonist is terrible; the sound mixing is atrocious; the models are janky; and swapping to your compass can cause a model-locking bug that necessitates a checkpoint restart... Yet, if it's classic pulp adventure you seek -- this archetype-heavy game will scratch that itch! I'm not throwing shade -- I'm saying the game is worth its price, especially for older systems. Move over, Indiana Jones -- it's... generic machismo action guy who is a legally-distinct entity & separately-copyrighted descendant of an actual pre-existing public domain pulp-action hero adventurer! Excelsior!!

I enjoyed the adventure mode! Pretty cool variety weapons. Reminds me of indiana jones/tomb raider in first person. The puzzles weren't hard but I did need some help with the puzzles. I think it's funner than it looked on steam store.

Fun game with great "Indiana Jones" style ambiance. Controls are easy and intuitive, puzzles are easy, if somewhat obtuse (but that's the point of a puzzle, isn't it?), and graphics are nice considering its age. I generally find FPS games boring after a while, but two stand out in my mind: The original "Half-Life" and "Return to Castle Wolfenstein". Like these games, "Deadfall" has a good variety of levels that remain within its setting while keeping the game play varied as well. Not sure why this game isn't better known, but it deserves to be. Is it as good as those games previously mentioned? Well, no, further into the game it starts to develop a sort of sameness, the puzzles aren't as clever as in "Half-Life", nor is the gun play, while good, quite as satisfying as in the other games. But it blends its elements well into a decent package, and it isn't priced to break the bank. So if you're into shooters and are a fan of old pulp fiction, you'll probably have a good time with this one.

This type of games is usually not in that category when you meet someone and hear "hey, Deadfall Adventures is one of my favourite games of all time!", but this is a game with a lot of effort and heart that devs put in. If you try to do some decomposition and took each element of this game apart from each other, than you have pretty mediocre game (maybe visually it is pretty nice), but this is that case when this kinda weak parts together forms something with a charm. I'm not a fan of Indiana Jones, doesn't know anything about Allan Quatermain (besides some 80's movie that I barely remember), but I like that silly comedy-adventure spirit of such projects like Uncharted, Strange Brigade or Pitfall: The Lost Expedition. And Deadfall Adventures hit that same mark, when game give you various locations at okay pace, decent shooting mechanics and even okay'ish puzzles, when you doesn't think too much and just solve stuff for first classes of school. Funny thing, but because of NecroVision, I was thinking that this game would be similar in terms of messy storytelling and very weak shooting, but this game is much more polished in every aspect. I expect two things from games: great story and narrative, atmosphere +, if possible, gameplay. Such games are VERY hard for me to find and can be counted on the fingers of both hands. And there is second type: Simple, kinda focused on few things, enjoyable games that are fun to play and evoke pleasant associations. Like you just know from start where devs take their inspirations and you hope this new game would be fun. And Deadfall Adventures is fun. At times stupid, but in good, videogame-y way. Crocodiles that lives inside ancient pyramid? You don't care about why they live there and even how they are alive, what they eat. Behind ancient, sealed (on puzzle), door are bunch of nazis or soviets? How they appeared there is not a question, because now you have someone to shoot and have fun! Doors and other ways to travel further working only when you shoot some random buttons? Sure, it's illogical and stupid, but if it's fun - why not?

Its first person indiana jones, with a bit more focus on action than puzzle solving, though there are some puzzles and traps to solve none of them are too difficult. The focus here is the FPS action, with fire fights with Nazis, Russians, and the undead on occasion. It's a fun time with a decent enough length for the price. The gun play might not be anything to write home about but the environments and action are good for what they are.
