Alright, after putting 10+ hours of pure game play. This is a stupendous SHMUP. I never played the original. Didn't even know it existed. Until this. This game beats you up to make you better. Yet, ever so gentle to new comers. It's crazy. This is a high replay value of a game 10/10.

This is one of the best shoot em ups I played so far. And I'm old.. so I had time over the years to try some. The overall design here is outstanding! Enemies, the levels & bossfights are super fun. I didnt play the og game but you can play it in this version as well and while this might be a bit dated (especially after playing the reboot) you can clearly see the source of inspiration and I love how they approached to "remaster" the og devilblade. The gameplay is pretty simple and the berserk mechanic wich allows you to boost your points by using a bombslot for that and risking being hit more easily is a great idea to encourage the player going the hard way and cracking the high scores again and again. Last but not least the soundtrack.. imo the biggest improvement from og to reboot. That new tunes just slap you and keep the adrenalin pumpin! All in all perfect! 10/10

Ideal shmup for people who want to get into the genre (play it on easy mode, no shame!). Absolutely gorgeous passion project from a Vanillaware alum with rewarding underlying systems. Highest recommendation.

On the bandcamp page for the OST, Devil Blade Reboot is described as an "ultra-hardcore, orthodox vertical scrolling shooter game". I don't hear games described as "orthodox" very often, I imagine in most contexts it would have a negative connotation, but it's maybe the most appropriate word that could be used. The game is so pure and unapologetic in it's intentions to be a New Old Thing. I think Devil Blade Reboot is also probably one of the best options for people new or only casually engaged with the genre despite it self-identifying as hardcore. The skill floor is actually really low, and the hardcore, sicko mode stuff is all optional execution challenge layered on top of the very simple and approachable core experience. So if a player wants to take those next steps and start playing for score, or trying higher difficulties, they will not be gatekept by the need to internalize concepts or systems that are obtuse or rooted in decades of complicated genre evolution.
