Sometimes good games come from unexpected places. Devil Blade REBOOT is a modern remake of a homebrew shoot’em up originally created with Dezaemon Plus, a Japan-exclusive PS1 game creation tool. Think RPG Maker, but for shmups. It’s a fascinating origin story that gives this release a bit of underdog charm. At its core, Devil Blade REBOOT revolves around a simple but effective risk-versus-reward mechanic. The closer you fly to enemy ships and bullets, the higher your score multiplier climbs. However, the game doesn’t let you farm points for free: as your multiplier increases, so does the game’s difficulty. This creates a constant push-and-pull between playing safely and chasing bigger scores, adding tension to every encounter. The package is surprisingly generous for such a short game. Alongside the main campaign, players can unlock additional continues, a gallery mode, the original soundtrack, and even a retro mode that lets you experience the original Dezaemon Plus version. These extras help flesh out the release and offer a nice glimpse into the game’s history. Visually, the game gets the job done, but it never truly stands out. The graphics are perfectly serviceable and the art direction is decent enough, though it often feels constrained by the limitations of the original source material. Nothing looks bad, but nothing left a lasting impression either. One area where I think Devil Blade REBOOT falls a little short is in its overall depth. After playing games like Drainus, I couldn’t help but feel that Drainus offered a more fully realized experience. The game is also very short. With only five stages and a final boss standing between you and the credits, most players will see everything the game has to offer in a relatively short amount of time. That said, I still recommend Devil Blade REBOOT. Not every shoot’em up needs to be a brutal bullet-hell marathon designed for genre veterans. This is an approachable, welcoming shmup that introduces its mechanics clearly and remains enjoyable without demanding superhuman reflexes. If you’re curious about the genre or simply looking for a compact, well-made arcade experience, Devil Blade REBOOT is an easy recommendation.

AWESOME. Berserk system kicks ass. Boost system kicks ass, Scoring kicks ass. Everything about this game kicks ass. There's a lot of nice extras too like the stage select, boss practice, retro mode, galleries, etc.

Alright, after putting 10+ hours of pure game play. This is a stupendous SHMUP. I never played the original. Didn't even know it existed. Until this. This game beats you up to make you better. Yet, ever so gentle to new comers. It's crazy. This is a high replay value of a game 10/10.

This is one of the best shoot em ups I played so far. And I'm old.. so I had time over the years to try some. The overall design here is outstanding! Enemies, the levels & bossfights are super fun. I didnt play the og game but you can play it in this version as well and while this might be a bit dated (especially after playing the reboot) you can clearly see the source of inspiration and I love how they approached to "remaster" the og devilblade. The gameplay is pretty simple and the berserk mechanic wich allows you to boost your points by using a bombslot for that and risking being hit more easily is a great idea to encourage the player going the hard way and cracking the high scores again and again. Last but not least the soundtrack.. imo the biggest improvement from og to reboot. That new tunes just slap you and keep the adrenalin pumpin! All in all perfect! 10/10

Ideal shmup for people who want to get into the genre (play it on easy mode, no shame!). Absolutely gorgeous passion project from a Vanillaware alum with rewarding underlying systems. Highest recommendation.
