I am happily giving this game the thumbs up. The good is all there - fun gameplay loop, quirky characters and humor, build-crafting is fun, you can get very creative with some gameplay mechanics, and waste quite a bit of time with this game. You can expect to easily double your money spent in game time, and maybe even triple it if you get into the spirit of things, as there are three acts to complete. The bad? I would say only one thing - the combat it gets a bit repetitive after a while. It is compensated by the great soundtrack though.

Can't help but recommend this one, loved it. As someone who was a fan of Darkest Dungeon, but thought the combat balance in that game was a let down, this is a huge improvement on a similar formula. Essentially you build up a roster of characters of various classes and send them out on expeditions, the goal is simply to get stronger and build an increasingly more powerful squad to take on the game's toughest challenges. What's great is that all characters have the ability to fully multi-class, and there are a ton of class options to choose from. You can really dig into the pros and cons of each class and the selection of abilities/passives they come with. The game outright encourages mixing classes and breaking the game by finding overpowered synergies. In combat, you're rolling to determine what actions you can take in a given turn. A big part of the fun is mitigating the impact that RNG has on your action economy and taking strategic risks. For example, you can forgo using a re-roll on one character in order to use two re-rolls on another character who might be in a better position on the map or have more resource-heavy abilities. Maybe your character has cheap abilities with low dice costs, or simply a high "dice power" stat which means they roll 8 or 9 dice to increase their odds. You also need to leverage using the powerful "chroma" dice face which increases enemy power but can be used in place of any other face. As usual, the game's detractors have failed to realise all of this is a core part of the strategy and call the game too RNG heavy. They also say it lacks depth, which is dumbfounding given the amount of options available. It could be the game's opening act that gives off that impression. They only let you take two party members at a time into the first group of missions and I think that represents the game at its weakest. It probably would have been better to have your family expand quicker and allow squads of four or more earlier on in the game. XCOM understood how important this was and Long War took it even further. Bigger really is better when it comes to squad size. This would have also allowed the game's major selling point to shine. The family system. You grow a dynasty of characters by having children and marrying them off. Stronger characters attract more powerful suitors, and in turn, those characters make stronger children who are able to inherit some of the abilities of their ancestors in addition to those provided by whatever classes you choose for them. This made me incredibly attached to my squad, which when paired with the permadeath created a perfect amount of tension in combat. The stamina system is where this falters though, instead of injured party members requiring rest after missions, characters have a stamina bar which depletes the longer you spend in them. This stamina bar is also tied to your characters stats, so exhausted party members perform worse, whereas energetic ones perform better. I understand the impulse to encourage using a variety of party members, but I feel this is another area where the contemporaries got it right. Making sure characters didn't get too injured added another level of strategy to combat knowing that it would affect the "meta" level of the game. Relegating this to a stamina system that consistently drains characters at the same rate was a misfire. It also just outright feels bad to have your characters' stats drain mid-mission due to lethargy. This compounds with the fact that you have the option use currency to bring their stamina back up, and you are required to use currency to replenish their health. Generally, it's more gratifying to spend money on improving and upgrading your squad, so I think that should have been the focus. Instead you end up spending a large amount of gold healing, but marriage and birth are incredibly cheap. The devs seem to be aware of this on some level so I won't harp on about it too much, they have in fact already reduced the stamina drain somewhat. Despite all of this, the game is still absolutely worth your time. If I sound overly critical, it's only because I really do enjoy this game and am very impressed with this small team have delivered. Give this game a shot, you won't regret it.

This is a game I would highly recommend, but not without mentioning where there is room for improvement. First of all, the presentation oozes with style and has customization for DAYS. The challenges are well defined and diversified for an experience that makes the runs on each map exciting and refreshing. The amount of control over classes, stats, and characters overall is so unique to this game, making a lot of contemporary rogue/dice elements feel very novel. The soundtrack, the story, writing this review is getting me excited to boot it up as soon as I'm done writing Now for improvements that ought to be made. For the gameplay's isometric presentation, things like details(status effects, hit points) often get lost or are not as well overlapped/presented as they could be. There is also minimal settings adjustment, so no way to change shortcuts. If the game has a failing, to me it is these keypoints. Have had no bugs/crashes/soft locks prevent me from progressing, and I look forward to updates that add to the meat and potatoes on offer in dice gambit. All in all, if you like a game that is unapologetically stylized, challenging, and engaging with the player's ability to always be refining strategies for runs, give the demo a try. The demo gives a seamless prologue/tutorial that well defines it's offerings and gameplay mechanics & loops. I was immediately sold afterwards, and I'm gonna boot up again right now 8.9/10 Flawed like a diamond in the rough, waiting to be just a touch more polished ☆♡

TLDR; Play the demo, buy the game. After having just completed Act 1 on the recommended difficulty, Dice Gambit offers a unique blend of style, pacing, and gameplay. I often find most strategy turn-based rpgs to have some shape or form of convoluted mechanics like hidden stats, min-maxing, and/or following a meta but Dice Gambit has yet to disappoint. Everything mechanically is front and center and what you see is what you get. Combine this with the plentiful amount of synergistic classes and abilities and you will find many your playable characters combo-ing like a song and dance. Artistically, the game is charming to say the least. Characters are recognizable through their art and dialogue, environments and player models are cel-shaded, and the hand-drawn 2D animations are consistent, succinct, and snappy. Pacing-wise, there's a perfect spread of story, strategy, and combat that has you feeling like you're progressing rapidly. Nothing overstays its welcome and I find myself finishing one battle that may have taken some 15 odd minutes to complete only to then immediately march on to fight another. As for the cons (from what I've played), the three biggest issues I could foresee new players having are the variety of enemies, the variety of missions, and the management of time and money. So far, I've encountered 8 enemy types, 4 of which you'll be seeing 75% of the time. As for the mission types, there's 5 that I can think of, and you'll mostly be doing 2. I think the largest room for improvement is more diversity in these aspects. I love love love what you can do to your characters, but ultimately, they'll just be killing the same mobs in the same missions in slightly different ways over and over again. Of course, I don't mind this *for now*, but I can definitely see myself burning out as the campaign progresses. As for the time/money mechanic, In Act 1 you are immediately put on a timer to level up as fast as you can. You can do this by either fighting or by spending money. Money is mostly used to heal, restore stamina, expand your family, and (as mentioned) to level up your characters. By the end of Act 1 you're expected to be around level 10 but I believe I only had two out of five at level 10 and the other three at level 5. Weirdly enough, however, leveled missions don't affect mobs' stats all too much because I was able to beat a level 10 mission with a party of level 3's, so I'd assume as you go higher in difficulty this would become more of an issue. Outside of that, juggling your party's stamina is probably the largest hurdle most players will find difficulty with. Stamina is affected by how many times a character enters combat. As a character continues to keep fighting, that character will suffer debuffs across the board. This is especially difficult in the early game, as you *have* to keep using the same few character you have on hand, but becomes trivial as you progress. Lastly, I think Dice Gambit could leverage its shortcomings with a steam workshop addition. There's so much potential everywhere in this game that I'd hate to see it squandered. New 3D character models could be made so that not everyone looks like a variation of a knight, enemies could be given certain buffs, weaknesses, and attack abilities, and new missions and enemy types would always be welcomed. Of course, this would likely require more resources than it'd warrant unless Dice Gambit acquired the fanbase to call for it, which is why I'm writing this review. Chromatic Ink has proved themselves to be a more than capable studio that has made an extremely competent game and experience. Dice Gambit just needs that extra push in the right direction for a more varied and likable experience.

Quite note: I played a fair amount of the demo before getting the game. If you're looking for a tactics type game with a system that "inherits" traits from characters, this is great. A lot of tactics games don't really hit the right notes for me but this one really does it. It has... soft roguelite aspects where your characters gain new traits and classes and you learn the game more and make your next "kid" better. You mess up and make characters that aren't great but then you make their daughter a monster and she marries a guy who looks like a weirdo but he's okay cause he's great at what he does. If you are on the fence, try the demo and decide for yourself. The progress carries over. It's worth the try and I definitely recommend it. I really like this game! I really don't leave many reviews but seeing as this game just came out and I want the game to be supported, here I am.
