The steam version is a straight port of the PS2 version from 2003. This means the game is old school, and not always for the better. That said, Disgaea 1 has something that the series has lost over time: a cohesive, enjoyable story. The characters *make* jokes instead of *being* jokes. As the first entry, Laharl and co feel like actual brats and friends instead of the flanderized versions that pop in for postgame in other entries. The gameplay is rather slow, especially if you have other Disgaea experience. There are several notable bugs, including things like statisticians being capped at 300% even if the UI lets you go to 900%. I love this game, but it is flawed. If you have a Switch, consider the Disgaea 1 Complete to have this same game with a bit more polish. Oh, and if you look at any other NIS titles, the company has fallen from grace. Its latest games as of 2026 are money-grubbing cash grabs with quality worse than a mobile game. IMO, stick to the first couple Disgaea games.
I'm recommending Disgaea because imo it's a fun game. However, I should give a warning: you have an obligatory visit to Item world, which due to its random grid nature can make you stuck. In theory, you might be better off starting with the 2nd one or later (self contained stories. Don't worry). To say a bit more about it, this game is a tactical rpg that works in a grid. You can move and perform an action, whether it's lifting someone, attacking or performing a special skill (magic or special attacks). The bad thing about the game is that it's very grindy. It unirocally allows you to reach level 1000+ but you will have to put time in it (meanwhile I'm over here at level 50) What's the biggest positive is this game's character and monster design. The demons all have such nice and imaginative designs I can't help but love them. In addition, the special attacks are also creative and sometimes very anime-like. The story, is ok, but the game has a nice dose of humour that helps you have a great time. TL;DR: if you don't mind the grind, it's a nice game to have. I give it an 8/10
this game changed me and has effects akin to cocaine the artwork, music and voice acting are full of soul. setting is nice though the writing is average. the tag says "strategy rpg" but instead of strategizing how to overcome strategic stage obstacles like normal, you mostly strategize on how to optimize your grinding. quite slow compared to most of its sequels so if you are going for postgame and stuff: usage of some speedhack is highly advised t͟h͟i͟s͟ w͟i͟l͟l͟ b͟e͟ a͟ d͟i͟f͟f͟e͟r͟e͟n͟t͟ s͟e͟c͟t͟i͟o͟n͟ a͟b͟o͟u͟t͟ m͟e͟ t͟a͟l͟k͟i͟n͟g͟ a͟b͟o͟u͟t͟ N͟I͟S͟'s͟ l͟a͟t͟e͟r͟ d͟e͟s͟i͟g͟n͟ c͟h͟o͟i͟c͟e͟s͟ NIS likes doing crossovers between their games a lot. you can even see this in D1PC with characters like Priere, Marjoly, Baal and Adell&Rozalin at postgame. so when you hop into another game its natural that laharl also greets you... with apparently all of his character development disregarded. he just defaults back to the behaviours of early D1, which irritates me. in most endings of D1 he attains the state of a respectable if not strong prince in the eyes of the player. but then they hit you with brat laharl in every appearance, thanks NIS. as if this isn't enough, they decide to rob him of his gold bracelets to instead give him gloves and lengthen his shorts. there is also the addition of NIS sticking to the real slim character phenotypes and making them look like stickmen, which i dislike. when compared to the PS2 laharl it feels soulless. i hate it and can't believe how or why they did this. it awakens the monster in me whenever i see side by side in google images. with NIS' transition to 3D and getting dissatisfaction from fans, i cant help but wonder where this ship will end up... thank you for reading (bonus points if you read the rant about NIS)
