I like dinosaurs and I like mystery games. I expected this to be a short adventure of about 3-4 small mysteries to solve in a comedic world of dinosaurs. Instead, I find myself wondering whether or not a modern government can fundamentally stand on centre-leaning world views that promote unity amongst stronger left and right leaning citizens without simply atrophying due to lack of substantial mobilization because some people would cut off their own nose if it would spite their face. Worth the price.
Just finished it and I can say I enjoyed Dinocop quite a lot! Its a silly dino mystery game with a slight sprinkle of jazzpunk in it. I do hope the devs make a sequel for the game, I am left wanting more! Need more...dinocop.... PLEASE Dinocop 2..........PLEAASE...........................PLEAAAAAAAAASE....Dinocop TWO!!!....PLEASEE... Also need more Bert from RDM romance in the sequel, thank you, I love that stupid pachy too much hes my favorite.
Love the fact that it's a time based experience that you can unravel at your own pace and doesn't induce FOMO. Inspired and interesting story with a playful visual style and attaching, silly characters paired with a nonetheless serious narrative (which works super well). Also has a very fun soundtrack ! Looking forward to what Pieces puts out next :]
This game is personally a 10/10, at worst a 9/10. It falls heavily in the recent surge of knowledge-based adventure games and of that genre is closest to Outer Wilds. It takes the "conspiracy board" knowledge database from that, as well as effectively the Bomber's Notebook from Majora's Mask for keeping track of schedules. I've seen several other reviews say they got heavily stuck - I personally didn't have this issue but if you're stubborn it's easy to get trapped. This game is more progression gated than you'd expect and you literally cannot solve certain problems until you complete other quests that advance the story of certain characters. Often whatever you need is in a new room in the hotel. Unlike Outer Wilds the game doesn't really hint that often where the answer to the puzzle might be - you kind of just have to accept defeat and roll with the punches. There was one point where I did run dry of progression threads for a while before realizing I had to progress a fairly major story beat that felt like a point of no return to even progress seemingly minor quests like the rats (turns out there's only one point of no return and it's pretty clearly telegraphed. If you want to know, as spoiler-light as possible: after you've done almost everything in the game - there's a point where you go on the debate talk show a final time, that's your point of no return ). One "warning" is that this game is heavily political. It's hard to even call it allegory, It's just straight up a game about how cops are bad and criticizing the general oppression of minority populations in the US. With a heavy dose of satire of the kind of tactics done by "moderates". It inherits some of the usual issues with fantasy racism, but tone-wise it manages to avoid the usual pitfalls by being genuinely funny. It adopts similar techniques to Tactical Breach Wizards where everybody kind of just candidly says exactly what they're thinking at all times - barring lying for the plot. I think if this game was twice as long it could get grating, but at about 8 hours it works great. My only real criticism is that the mouse and keyboard controls are kind of jank. It feels designed for controller and menus and item use doesn't feel consistent in behavior - in particular a lot of menu elements are kind of random in whether they respond to mouse input or not (why can't I click on the tabs?). It doesn't detract from the experience too much, but it does take some getting used to and even after acclimating never feels great.
I thoroughly enjoyed my playthrough of Dinocop! I would recommend this game, but you should check out some clips of it before buying to make sure the humor aligns with you. It's very political and touches on modern day subjects, and not everyone would be interested in those kinds of jokes or enjoy that kind of story. I would not recommend this game to anyone who is more interested in action or minigames as the entire game is pretty much just walking & talking and putting pieces together to know the next character to talk to or spy on, with the last section of the game being a stealth level . The writing was very surprising to me at how well they were able to flesh out this world despite you being confined to a single hotel for its entirety. There was a lot of twists that felt obvious to me, but some that still caught me by surprise! All of the characters were written in such a way that I could understand where they were coming from and why they thought the things they did or acted in certain ways - even if I didn't agree with them or was yelling profanities to boo them when they came onto screen, they were all still enjoyable and believable characters. The game starts out very funny and lighthearted, and it has a shift into a darker tone when you near the finale. I know a lot of people have said that the shift was too harsh or sudden, and I can agree to a certain point, but it felt right to me to take things a bit more seriously as the stakes ramped up. The situation with Cronjager and Paco was definitely the turning point and it was much needed - it wasn't devoid of comedy after that point, there were still some moments that were funny or ridiculous, but it was more heartwarming and rounding off some of the character arcs that we got to learn about on the way. My main gripes with the game (at the time of writing) would be: -Tons of typos, these can be fixed easily in patches and the game was made by such a small team that it's not the worst offense. -I wish it was more obvious what items are interactable with the tools you get, I got stuck for a very long time in Room 205 and couldn't progress that otherwise easy section of the mystery because I couldn't see the grey interaction star on some of the items. Even just an accessibility setting that makes them a different and/or more annoying color for players with vision difficulty would be helpful! -Something about the kitchen and right side of the garden were horribly buggy during my playthrough, audio would garble and stutter, the camera would pause itself and then launch the player vision in a random direction, etc. I can't think of a reason why it would do this aside from just the sheer amount of items you can pick up and hold in the kitchen + the Honey outside ? I streamed the game so it might've made this worse and maybe others didn't experience it. -Dinocop's butt is too big for his britches and it's easy to get stuck on objects around the map Aside from those, I had no real problems with the game and I'm so so so excited for the teased DLC and next game the devs are making. Thanks so much for working on this experience, it was a lot of fun!
