There was a time when Disciples II: Rise of the Elves was often compared to Heroes of Might and Magic III. Back then, people argued about which one was better - but today, I don’t really see the need for that comparison. For me, both games are masterpieces that earned their own place in gaming history. What always pulls me back to Disciples II is its atmosphere. It’s dense, dark, and unapologetically gothic. Every unit portrait feels like a piece of art, and the maps are filled with tiny, handcrafted details that reward slow exploration. The color palette and music tie everything together beautifully, creating a world that feels grim, magical, and alive at the same time. The factions are another highlight. Humans, Undead, Demons, Dwarves - and, of course, the Elves introduced in Rise of the Elves - each feel truly distinct. They’re not just reskins with minor stat differences; they play differently and force you to adapt. Humans may look weak on paper, but their healers and protective magic make them incredibly resilient. On the other hand, the Undead sacrifice healing and protection for unique abilities like weapon immunity and even draining levels from enemies, reversing their hard-earned transformations. And those transformations - what a brilliant mechanic. Instead of simply upgrading units, you nurture them. They gain experience, evolve, and take on new forms once certain conditions are met. It’s a system that feels meaningful and personal, making every unit feel like an investment rather than a disposable resource. The gameplay itself dares to be different. Casting spells on the world map instead of in battle completely changes your strategic approach. Battles rely on fixed formations - front and back rows - with no movement, which at first feels restrictive, but quickly reveals surprising depth. Positioning and army composition become everything, and every decision matters. There’s also an incredible amount of content. Campaigns (sagas) and standalone scenarios (quests) are rich, varied, and plentiful. And if that’s not enough, custom sagas and quests extend the game’s life even further. It’s the kind of game you can return to again and again without it feeling stale. Of course, it’s not perfect. Like many games of its era, the hit chance system can feel… unfair. You’ll miss an 80% chance while the AI lands a 60% hit, and it can be frustrating - sometimes enough to tempt you into save scumming. Still, in multiplayer, this unpredictability adds tension and forces a more careful, tactical approach. Looking back, I know nostalgia plays a role in how much I love this game - but honestly, it doesn’t need it. Disciples II: Rise of the Elves stands strong on its own. It’s one of my favorite turn-based strategy games, and I know I’ll keep coming back to it from time to time, just to lose myself in its dark, beautiful world once again.

Mix of RPG and TBS packaged in an atmospheric gothic dark fantasy setting. Visually and acoustically it aged very well, especially the attack animations. Interface has just the right amount of retro. You can find wrappers on moddb that make it run smoother on newer systems. Compared to Gallean's Return, some extra missions are missing, but it makes elves playable and adds their campaign. Also adds a fair amount of neutral units and some new items.
