Disillusion ST is an oneiric adventure/dungeon crawler game made with RPG maker, and has elements that pertain to other games like Yume Nikki, LSD dream emulator, Hylics, ENA, etc. It's a really weird but absolutely enthralling experience: being off-putting, creepy, sad, moving and enlightening all in one package. As the tag says however - it is sort of a walking simulator, so I'd exercise caution if you are looking for some blood boiling action or whatnot, because Disillusion ST is a heavily atmospheric experience and takes time to reveal it's cards. It does have some negatives though Pros: - A really interesting mish-mash of artstyles: ranging from anime girls, weird dysmorphic beings who barely have any human shape at all, penguins and gangster mice, to mime's that may or may not have a twitch streaming careers . There are many areas and all of them have their distinctions, even if they will repeat a lot which I will mention in the con section. Superb art designs all around - An absolutely fantastic soundtrack, which to me is one of the best at emulating that dream-esque vibe that I have seen in games, and was the main reason for me to try this game out. I don't think I really need to go into more detail into this - Superb dialogue and themes: The Hylics inspiration comes in through here, most characters talk a bunch of gibberish that range from weirdly insightful commentary that has to do with the themes of the game itself - Memories, identity - and that identity's continued degradation, escaping the cycle of life-death-rebirth or samsara, forgiveness and what one needs to achieve, or just random garbage like one sorta schizophrenic girl's quest to get Huge tidz. It all ranges from wildly interesting to stuff that is sorta off-putting to chucklesome moments that are still weird, all in service in making Naraka/dream world feel more lived in and even more so making it feel disjointed and sad at the same time. - Story itself takes time and goes on many angles and approaches many territories, going, again, from kinda humorous stuff to some disturbing stuff - like the denizens of the Rusted Realm giving away their mortality, Himiko's death to bring the sun back and stop the demon city's growth, Ori and Chiyo's abusive power dynamic, and obviously, the main character of the story - Mel's journey of trying to forgive herself and the Golem's attempt at achieving that goal, even if that attempt feels futile at times . The multiple endings also help making the journey itself more interesting and more defined, even if it has it's shortcomings. - Card game is sorta fun Neutral: - Combat is boring and uninteresting, even the first game's basic RPG maker combat was more interesting - Framerates are a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rollercoaster which can dip to like 10 fps to 60 in seconds for no reason - Crashes - Player unfriendliness - as in you have no menu or anything to consult to see your progress besides the collected items, so you can't see your secret progress a lot of the times which becomes a bad thing I will mention - The general gameplay most of the time is sorta just walking around trying to find a few specific npcs, basically there is none of that problem solving aspect that for example Yume Nikki had (even if minimal), so it can get boring after a while Cons: - This game is an absolute mess when it comes to programming. I'm gonna be real: I couldn't finish the game (Even if I got the achievement for it for some reason), there are no fail-safes for anything at all, so you can brick your saves really easily which I think absolutely sours this game. You can get stuck - if you play in pacifist in a lot of ways, if you exhaust all your karma gaining options (which happened to me), sometimes mandatory npcs stop spawning into the game world so the other two ending besides the tower become literally inaccessible, there are events you can brick yourself out like the blue doors, etc. All this does is making you, the player, scour through the guide in the steam guide's section which just ruins the first time playing experience, and even then, I don't think it's good design that you can lock yourself out of any endings if you want to actually roleplay and not just say the correct answers every time. Overall: 8.5/10 I think the cons really really sour the experience in the wake of playability, but overall this is still wonderful time that isn't going to be the most action filled 18-20 hours of your life, but it will be a really intriguing experience that might stick with you a while, with the visuals being striking, with a musical identity like few games, the story and characters being both amusing and poignant, the themes centering about buddhism and other spiritual concepts, and just, all in all being a wild ride for those who like this sorta thing, I'd recommend them Disillusion ST. NO SPOILERS (nobody reads these anyway) Most of the enjoyment I had while playing this game came from the many npc interactions that can be found throughout it, as well as the story. However, what I've noticed in my playthroughs is that the further you get into the game the less new interactions become available to you, and it can become very time consuming to find specific interactions you need because almost everything is based around RNG. So the latter half of the game can be a bit of a slog. I'd genuinely recommend using a guide if you get stuck or want to get any other endings other than the main one because in some cases if you aren't REALLY specific about your dialogue choices it could lock you out of the ending you want. Also I'd recommend playing Disillusion first. Melpomene my beloved.

Disillusion ST feels like a love letter to surrealism and abstract ideas (As well as games like LSD Dream Emulator and Yume Nikki). The characters are all distinct and very interestingly designed with different mediums and art styles, the dialogue is confusing but as you continue to play you finally start to grasp the story and all its quirks. Though I still have much more to discover, this game rewards you for curiosity and persevering throughout it's confusing layout. If I had to list some complaints, it would be that the fighting system leaves much to be desired, with missing the enemy feeling like a 80% chance and the enemies dealing a lot of damage. This isn't really a game you play for amazing gameplay but for art, story, characters, and the soundtrack. Some people aren't into that, so if you get easily bored or don't walking-sim style games I wouldn't recommend it. This game is a lovely mishmash of ideas, where you can play card games, Russian roulette, marble race your tiny Cherub child, fight enemies, and suffer as your fav character dies. If you love art, surrealism, a confusing story and setting you have to try to understand, and exploration, then this game is for you. Also once you understand the card game it is pretty freaking fun.

I absolutely LOVE this game. There's the surface level things like enjoying the presentation and artstyle (It really is me core #NGL and I love Alonya) but I really enjoyed the act of finding characters and the world building the game sets up I really liked the way each character carries a different response to whats essentially eternal damnation. Some champion redemption, some hedonism, and others simply want to make things work as they all try to grapple with their inevitable demise and loss of self. I really enjoyed the event chain between Esme and Meri; Esme learning to shed her image for the sake of another lost soul trying to find worth like her created really beautiful dialogue through no more than a few one off conversations and It really stuck with me. This game has a lot of characters themed around performers now that I think about it. They're the most emblematic of the different paths people take to the situation at hand. Areas have randomized character spawns so you never really know what you're gonna get. Until the late game It led me to work less towards finding any items and more towards just seeing what I'd find. Falls in line with the games narrative well, you really have NO idea what your looking for beyond a "you'll know it when you see it". This would begin to slow down later on as new characters spawned less though, required items became fewer and fewer and navigating the world became a lot easier to understand. I think by that point the game changed from just going where the wind took me and enjoying the ride to using what I've learned from the systems to get exactly what I needed to finish up. For some it'd get tiring but I enjoyed messing with powers that be with my still-limited understanding to get things done. Of all the character events in the game, I think the one to stick the most with me was Himiko's story. The way her death by the hands of lilith is so unprompted, the way the game consistently reminds you of her untimely demise by having her rotting corpse appear either be called to mind or find its way to you by sheer chance sinks really deep. Theres a very specific scene where you get to go fishing with a certain character on frequent occasions looking for parts of herself, pulling up random objects or characters from down below. You do it again with them, only for today's catch to be Himiko's rotting corpse, limbs missing and an eye gouged out. All I could say is "Dude what the ♥♥♥♥ ". Needless to say, when it came time to get revenge for her it was an all-time high for the game when I thought things were getting really repetitive. For the most part, I wouldn't call this a game per say and more like a general art project that uses a game as a vehicle for what it wants to do. The actual gameplay features like the card game and the combat are serviceable but nothing to write home about. The combat mode specifically was incredibly "eh", successful lands are down to luck so more often than not it was more beneficial to just run away from enemies or kill them from afar with the bells. I also encountered repeated instances where I would spawn right in front of an enemy when entering a new room, immediately leaving me vulnerable to attack and locked into combat if I want to stay in the area. Even near the end of the game, there were still surprises to be had. There are little subtle events that Ive had happen to me that go unexplained and overall have no impact on the larger plot that I liked a lot. Namely on numerous occasions one of the things that could potentially spawn is a sickly women enemy. It doesn't attack like a normal enemy, it isn't stationary and interactable with like the NPC variant, it just spawns in, and makes a mad dash towards you the moment you're in range and promptly despawns. I have NO idea what its there for and I probably never will. Theres also a non-interactable enemy in one of the areas that shares an eerie resemblance to himiko, only appearing after she dies, that runs away from you and disappears once in you're view for too long. The music is AMAZING, like you won't catch me bumping a lot of it casually but the way it sets up the tone for areas is great. I really like Asphodel, Chess, Kodhok Ngorek, I love you!, Disillusion Kart Racer, Rusted Realm, and PillarLoop. As for the general story, I really enjoy the characterization of Mel as the story unfolds. The Jophiel ending has her properly face her inner conflict and why she wants to construct a tower in the first place. It adds a layer to her that makes her a lot more like the people you find around the narraka, simply trying to find some form of happiness in all the chaos. I really like the push and pull the characters give the protagonist, golem, about wheter or not he should follow through. As the game unfolds you really start to see characters come up to you with really good points. HimIko's final message after death added some nice emotional stakes and Mainan Hantu's dissertation on the humanistic qualities that the Narraka provides, along with the ways it helps people find peace in their moments of suffering through the convergence of old and new memories. But on the other, we get to see first hand the explicit harm the Narraka does to characters. Many are found losing memories; Celare, for instance, has devoted her life to running purely to negate the degenerative effects of the narraka, constantly grappling with the fact that she will one day have to stop one day or another. It adds a very real conflict to what you're setting out to do, and the slow reveal of characters who clearly support and don't support you gave me a lot to think about. Anyway, With all that said this game is kind of a beautiful moment... Its not the best as an actual game but if you want some genuinely amazing world building, interesting means of delivering it to you, amazing visuals, or just want to get lost in a seemingly nonsensical world. This game just might be for you. Certainly was for me.
