Dominions somehow merges the horror and brutality of large-scale warfare between primordial entities with the mundane drudgery of managing a huge excel spreadsheet.

This is a great game series, one of a kind. I'm not really a fan of how the authors monetize the game by releasing a new numbered part, instead of upgrading the previous one. That makes a lot of community effort obsolete, mainly maps and conversion mods. On the other hand, it gives them a freedom to change major mechanics without breaking compatibility. It's better than DLC's, I guess... Still saddens me, that the 5th part with its great main menu music will never be "The actual Dominions game" ever again. Buy Dominions 6 instead of this, it's a straight up upgrade. But at least listen to the 5th soundtrack on Youtube. It shouldn't be forgotten.

A unique take on the 4X genre, focused just about exclusively on combat. All tactics have to be predetermined in the army setup screen, the battles are resolved automatically between turns without any player input so you have to make sure your soldiers and mages have all of their orders set up just right. The mechanics aren't terribly complex but the sheer amount of options you have is unparalleled. Hundreds of unit types, dozens of factions, a plethora of spells and magic items. It really shines in multiplayer where you interact with all of the systems, the singleplayer AI is decent but doesn't experiment much with the magic system so you can abuse that to beat it even on harder difficulties. The price can seem a bit steep for such an old game, and you may want to buy the next release instead if you're paying full price. But if you like 4X or grand strategy, this is well worth picking up, especially on sale.
