(Played with official external content patch) I was aromantic due to trauma before I played this game. I came out of it with stronger romantic feelings in my heart than I ever had before. Doukyuusei healed me. This 1992 (rewritten in 1999) Tokimeki Memorial-inspiring dating sim remake is still brilliant in 33 years later. It explores so many feelings and relationship challenges and worries and insecurities with a careful hand and somehow still comes out feeling like it won every battle it could have dropped the ball on. Except one, but oh my god does Doukyuusei 2 shows they knew how to make that right. Hopefully English-speakers will get to play that one in the near future! I love the addition of an "easy" mode but don't be fooled; you should manually explore the map and you should try not to rely on skipping to events as it can cause other flags to be skipped and make the game more difficult or impossible to get some heroines. I promise the game is winnable on a first playthrough on "Classic" too for those who want a more challenging simulation game to play! Doukyuusei gives you many resources with which to keep track of your progress without an event diary and even has some sly, cheat-like mechanics to help get one through the game successfully. I think the one small weakness of the gameplay is the reliance on completing meetups in specific locations over and over to "clear" the area for more important events, so later, busier days in the calendar can sometimes devolve into checking every meeting area to clear it of characters. The sequel fixes this by prioritizing flags over other events, but you'll have to bear with it here. There is a character that feels like she was added late into development and another which hasn't aged particularly well but other than that, it's a gigantic cast of wonderful women I loved spending time with, worrying about (both emotionally and within the context of gameplay), and learning their stories. I'm so glad they kept the blinking from the early releases too, I know that's on its way out even for remakes but it adds a lot of personality to the game that you won't (currently) get from the remake of 2. Doukyuusei is an incredibly fun dating sim that will probably either make you feel the tension of a relationship, or heal your wounds. I still can't stop thinking about it a year and a half after finishing it!

I quite enjoyed this game. I've played quite a few visual novels (VN) before, and they're usually pretty static with an overall story that trails off a little depending on which heroine you go for and the choices you pick during key events. This is my first VN that played more like a proper romance simulator where you have to pay attention to the time and what small things you say in response to heroines and get to move a little chibi character sprite around the map in search of events with the characters. It was really quite fun, and I opted to use the "Easy Mode" that basically shows you on the map where there's an event that can currently be had. I just finished my first playthrough and got most of the heroine's endings, I accidentally messed a couple up by forgetting about their dates or accidentally activated a scene with someone else that caused me to miss a key scene. Also it's apparently impossible to see every single route because some routes you clear will lock you out of others. I think I will do a replay of this game one day to see the other routes, but I'm in no hurry and ended the game quite satisfied with what I played. The story was...well I can't really praise the story because there wasn't really any. In normal VNs, there's usually a general plotline but this game is literally just a romance simulator. It's just a bunch of random events that are all real slice of life, mundane conversations with people where you get to know them a little and then if you play your cards right, at the end of the few weeks you have of summer break, you get to ask them out. The endings were very brief and not much really happens. Just several lines of dialogue and some extra CGs showing you the future you and the girl who chose will have together. I enjoyed the overall simple experience and getting to know the characters, but if you're looking for an exciting or very interesting story, you won't find it here. This game does have some very uncomfortable moments in it, though. One scene in particular really rubbed me the wrong way where you pretty much assault one of the girl's in a cinema and you have no choice but to do it. It's interactive too where you have to click on various body parts. I really didn't like that. But the interactive mode was pretty interesting and more often than not quite funny. When you meet people, not just heroines but your male friends too, you can enter an interactive mode and click on their various body parts where usually your character will make a comment about it to himself. More often than not they can be down right funny. Sometimes if you click on a girl's cleaveage, he'll make pervy comments and occasionally the girl will notice you looking and react to that It's especially funnier when you do it to your own hand in view or even on your guy friends. I was quite impressed just how much more unique dialogue there was just from taking the time to click everything you can think of in the background or on the person you're talking to, rather than just talking to them as default. You'll honestly miss out on quite a lot of interactions and new dialogue conversations if you just talk to people, and not take the time to click around over them. The h-scenes were very brief, usually only several lines long and then it abruptly ends. If you're looking for a bit of fap-fap action, I reckon you'll be very disappointed. I think they just exist to show a little bit of titty here and there, which I won't really complain about. But the scenes were so short and rushed that they kinda' felt out of place just to show a bit of nudity. I feel like the people wanting those scenes will mostly be disappointed because of how brief and short they all are. This was a new experience for me, though, and I really liked it. There was no complex or real important story, it was just a comedy about a horny young male trying to make the most of his summer holiday by trying to find a girlfriend. Where you just get to know a bunch of girls and just see numerous interactions with them all. It was quite fun, I'd definitely like to play more games like this in the future. Especially its sequel if it ever releases.

Get the patch and play on easy mode. It's kinda alright, depending on what you expect from it. And to me this game is a short dating sim where most things fall into cliche harem anime trope. If you want deep plots and characters you won't get it here. The remake art is also nice. I can see why the game was considered a masterpiece decades ago, but I wouldn't say it ages well. Worth it, especially on sale imo. I didn't know about easy mode hence the 24hrs, so it could've been finished it earlier if you're worried about the time. Humor : Dirty jokes, mostly the protag harassing the heroines. Didn't make me laugh much, but once or twice it got pretty absurd which made me chuckle. Plot : Pretty shallow, and pretty cliche. There'll be times where drama just forces its way into to story, only to never really be addressed. Some routes are good, but still not amazing. Characters : Probably the game's greatest strength, in terms of variety. There are so many character's archetype you'll probably like at least one of them. In terms of depth, it varies too. Gameplay : Non-existent. You just run around town until you run into one of the heroines. You'll never run out of money unless you spend the whole day riding trains. Play on easy mode and it'll save you a lot of time, as it'll show who's where and if you have reach the heroine's flag yet. "Scenes" : Most of them either fade to black or got interrupt by the plot before the protag gets to nut. Few of them do, and are well made, especially Natsuko's.

It was way better than I expected. First get the patch (guide to that exists) and try to play in “Classic mode” in the option menu for your blind 1st or 2nd playthrough. - Many reviews mentioned ‘annoying’ game map system having to randomly go in-out everywhere to look for event, but I would say it is charm of this game, it lets you explore this unknown universe non-linearly and let you get each happening by your own effort not just in order of predetermined chapters like in traditional VN. - The game will try to give you hints of next events (some will be ambiguous and you need to figure it out) so you are not totally in the dark here. - My first blind playthrough took me 16-17 hrs and I was even able to obtain multiple endings with it, so the condition was definitely not super strict. - MC dialogue will have a lot of indecent, stupid, silly, dirty jokes. I had lots of good laughs. But if this is not your style then the game might not for you. (heck why are you here reading this game store page anyway?) - Also let me say this, that this is not Nukige game (VN those focus on xxx) the deed scenes are very short and few, but I would say I’m enjoying its story more, the game will be even fine without those H scenes honestly.

I actually have a lot to say about this game. I don't necessarily want to say it in a Steam review. If you're the kind of person that might have an interest in this kind of game, play it. Get the 18+ patch. Adjust the walk speed in the options to make the overworld segments seem less janky. If I spoiled any of the details that someone interested in Dokyusei might find by playing it, I would be doing them a disservice. Instead, I will provide a list of Pro Tips that you might see in a late 90s/ early 00s GamePro magazine. Pro Tip: If you're going to meet the fortune teller, make it the first thing you do that day. They could potentially "predict" an event you've already triggered if you go later. Pro Tip: The characters in the game are aware of your gaze. In some cases, you can use this to your advantage. Pro Tip: If a wizard in a fourth-dimensional house offers you the opportunity to rewind time, it might be worth it to reject the offer. Pro Tip: The freaks come out at night. Pro Tip: You can hang out in front of the movie theater in Yabuki without buying a ticket or being accompanied by a date. Pro Tip: What's that in Chiharu's window? Pro Tip: If the way forward does not seem clear, examine everything in the scene multiple times. Pro Tip: When answering a multiple choice question with a definite answer, carefully read all the possible choices before making your selection. Pro Tip: In your apartment, checking the window does not cost additional time. Pro Tip: If you have somewhere to be at a specific time, it might behoove you to head there 2 or 3 hours early. Though I do have some issues with the game, they are mostly trivial. For instance, on the fast-travel map, the text heading for the fortune teller uses a controversial word. Manually traversing the map feels a little awkward. When I first started Dokyusei, I didn't know what I was in for. I'm glad I stuck with it. Over the course of the game, my impression went from "this is a game I should be ashamed to be playing" to "this is one of the best games I've ever played, and I don't care who knows I played it."
