It's a fun roguelike with little player choice that starts out fun but horrifically overstays its welcome with skill-less grindy achievements. It's based on a Russian meme of the 1988 Russian "Treasure Island" which in itself is so bizarre that it warped my mind the way a spoon might warp jello. There's lots of weird bad electronic music and tons of items you pick up with no in-game explanation. No matter how well you play you will get instakilled at some point by something. You can't see many of the projectiles, the game hides cannons behind leaves so you can't even see them and your player sprite blocks half the screen. Eventually I understood the "flow" of the game and got an A+ ranking in a few hours. The remaining achievements were just grinding, the most egregious being defeating a single boss 40 times. You might play the game for 3 hours and only encounter the boss once, so it's just awful. The game said I was top 10 on the global leaderboard after a 5 hour session before I died without even understanding why, and yet I still had not unlocked all the achievements even after all that. So, as I said earlier, beautiful graphics, a cool presentation and a generally fun game but unfortunately the lack of player choice makes much of it random chance and having to grind over and over to unlock the achievements is a nightmare that makes it truly enraging if you're a completionist.
Was I aware of the meme before this game? No. Did I think this was a meme game? No. I just thought it looked like a cool style of roguelike so I decided to give this a shot, and for a game based around a meme, there was actual effort put behind this. The gameplay itself is something that really intrigues me because it feels like one of those old school DOS/PC boomer shooters, but in third person, something I like a lot. You walk around room to room blasting enemies as Dr. Livesey, Squire, and Jimmy trying to reach the boss of the level and move on to the next until you die. Simple and straight to the point. The music that happens in this game is also a cool gimmick, music plays and you'll see your hearts on the bottom of the screen jumping around until BOOM! you then gain a special ability as your screen tints to a different color. You might have your rate of fire go up as you see red from rage, or you might get more bombs as there's a purple tint, etc it all also fires with the BPM to the music as well. Just an interesting and cool little addition. There isn't any real difficulty here however, you will walk around and just hold down left click making sure to pick up everything that drops and you can essentially play forever. Could be a pro for if you just want to chill blasting away pirates, which is fun, but it also doesn't provide much of a challenge so it could be a con for that as well. I haven't experienced any bugs either which is good, BUT, MAJOR BUT, I can see people getting stuck outside of the levels due to you being able to squeeze in through trees in the background, it hasn't happened to me yet, but looking for the hidden cats this might be a possibility. I don't have any real negatives to say here. The game is simple, straight to the point, and also fun. The $3 price tag is also something that seems pretty fair here for how much time you could get out of it, I've also seen this for 60 something cents previously which is even better. If it looks interesting to you I'd say snag it for sure.
