I have placed 250 hours into this game. So I will say if you enjoy a game that is a hybrid between a shooter and tower defense, this game is just for you. Or if nothing else, you enjoy a game with plenty of rat puns, rock music, and old style pop culture references. For a game at this price, it will keep you entertained and busy for a while.
10/10 Rat game. A side scroller Rat based shoot'em up style game. It reminds me of old flash games like Age of War, but Rat themed and with a whole 'lotta passion behind it. A great combat loop, with fun achievements and a killer, metal soundtrack that fits and compliments the bombastic style.
WAR RATS, a hand-drawn blast from the flash game past. This game was developed by ONE MAN. He did all of the art, SFX, and progratting himself- leaving only the music to be made elsewhere- yet it still fits like the final piece of a puzzle. The gratphics are beautiful- due to it being a solo creation, the artistic vision and style are rock-steady through the whole game. The SFX all have their own unique flavor, and the gameplay is a vicious gory loop of absolute joy. I grew up on flash games, playing hundreds of hand-drawn 2D games just like WAR RATS. When I played this game, it sucked me right in and I couldn't stop playing- I completed the main campaign in one night. It is difficult- but constantly rewarding, and even when you complete it there is more fun to be had in New Game+, Horde Mode, and Skirmish. There is always something to work for in terms of upgrades, and a decent amount of variety to keep things fresh. There are tons of pleasant little references to the games we love- like DOOM, Halo, and a bunch of other games. WAR RATS is supremely awesome- yes, however it's not all rug rats and rainbows. The most glaring issue is the games poor optimization. As you progress there are more and more enemies, items, and projectiles on screen. I would get as low as 10-20 FPS with hundreds of objects on screen and I have a 3070. Make sure you check out the minimum specs before purchasing, because as much as I want you to enjoy this game as I have, it may not be too fun if you're watching a slide show (a beautiful one at that). Additionally, the upgrades become more expensive exponentially, increasing from 12000 CHz to 58000~ in one instance (weapon upgrade). This would be fine if your money making capability was increased in relative tandem, however it gets to a point where striving for upgrades feels more like grinding and in the case of upgrading my shotgun- not even worth the time. All in all, as a fellow game dev, MASSIVE respect to the WAR RATS dev. Amazing game, even inspired me to add some more leveling/progression to my own game :) Thanks for the good time!
