New to DQ or a returning player.. get this game Dragon Quest is my favorite gaming franchise ever, I've played this game from the early 'Dragon Warrior' series on the NES all the way up to DQXI. The Dragon Quest (DQ) series offers such a big sense of adventure, with so many loveable characters you encounter throughout your journey. My favorite one has always been DQ8 (Journey of the Cursed King) but this remake - or reimagined version - really gives it a run for its money. Although I've not completed the game in its remade state, I've played the original on the PS and the later 3DS version as well. Since today is release day I thought it would be good to get a 'early impressions' review out right now, maybe you're still on the fence whether to get this game or not. Hope I can help you with that decision, as always there are no spoilers in my review. Something old, something new DQ7 has had a new coat of paint and it took me a little while to get used to. One of your partymembers is 17 years but looks like a 37 year old, he makes up for it in attitude though. Your partymembers are amazing though, they grow along with the story. Certain character traits will be there from the start to finish but how they learn to express themselves better after each chapter is truly awesome. Like I said, no spoilers, but still after all these years the moment you fourth partymember joins you.. it brings a tear to my eye. DQ7 offer such a feeling of profound joy, the animation is top-notch and the (mostly) British voice acting is a-ma-zing. DQ7 offers a lot of the things you are familiar with if you've played any of its previous games; Turn based fighting, a lot of monsters from each of the series and a lot of the itemization is the same too. For me it feels like wrapping myself in a warm blanket. The familiarity while also offering new missions, characters and environments is something this series does best and DQ7 is no exception. Best to play with.. Like previous remakes, DQ7 does not offer ultrawide support (although there are mods out there that fix it), which for me is kind of a shame since I have 2. But I also get it, this game came out way in the day before those really were a thing. I would advice you to play with a controller, the Xbox-controller is supported natively in the game's layout. I'm using a PS5-controller and it doesn't have the button layout support. It's no real issue though everything is very easy to setup and access. Also, it could be that I'm just doing something wrong in Steam's setup that it doesn't transfer to this game. The in-game setup is easy to get through and I found that the recommended settings are working great, I'll post my system specs at the bottom of my review. Customize your journey DQ7 offers the option to adjust the difficulty setting for your journey in more ways than the normal 'easy, medium, hard, insane'. You have an additional option which lets you choose if you want more/less: Monster difficulty, money drops, exp gain and more.. I love that feature, since I'm not really into the long grinding sessions in DQ-games but that always was mandatory in earlier games. Going to fight a boss? You'd spent an hour or more getting some better hp-pool and damage numbers. Now I can choose to gain more exp while not steamrolling bossing in one go as well by upgrading the monster difficulty. This tailor made experience hopefully gets added to all future releases as well. It shows the developer values each players experience they seek to get out of the game. Speaking of a different kind of journey, DQ7-reimagined has been trimmed down from its original version, by a lot. Less filler in the opening of the game and a lot of the more tedious mechanics that the old games had are gone as well. Like many other DQ-games it has monsters show in the area instead of random encounters and mission pointers + items are added on the map. For me it can feel a bit too much of a handholding thing sometimes. I like to speak to all the NPC's and take what they are telling as a guide to where to go next. It's not that it was always fun in the 'old times' but a little bit less handholding would be preferred (by me anyway). A solid yes.. Yes.. YES from me The DQ-series holds a special place in my gaming heart and DQ7-reimagined will for sure take its place in there as well. My love for gaming will never die and games like this will only make it grow to new heights. Werther you're a new player looking for a cool turn-based RPG to play (welcome, enjoy all these amazing DQ-games that are waiting for you to play them) or and old-skool fan, DQ7 offers everyone an adventure you're not soon to forget. Do I need to say I recommend the game anymore? What are you waiting for?! Much love like always, PJ Specs: CPU: 9800x3d GPU: GeForce RTX 4080 Super RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000Mhz HDD: NV3 Kingston 2TB drive

My favorite dragon quest game- which is saying something since I've been playing since NES Dragon Warrior (state side) and attended the DQ11 release party in Tokyo while I was across the pond. They have really put some love on this one. The models look fantastic- it feels like you could touch the fabrics and textures of the figurine behind them. I am a HUGE fan of this style and I think more RPG's could benefit from its style. The environments match. VA is incredible as we've come to suspect Only 16 hours in, and for fans of 7, you know I have a lot of road ahead of me- but man I am so happy to re-experience this after 25ish years. In the mess that is Square-Enix lately I am so glad DQ series still stays DQ. This has me even more excited for 12.

I loved the original release, and I’m having a blast with this one. There are plenty of QoL improvements that make the game far more approachable for newcomers to the series (easier EXP gain, the Zoom spell available at level 1, a x2 battle speed option, etc.). One of the biggest changes is the pacing. Dragon Quest VII is famously one of the longest entries in the series, easily surpassing 100 hours just for the main story. In Reimagined, a lot of filler has been cut to create a more streamlined experience. This may spark some controversy among fans, but I honestly think it’s a positive change. The original had sections that felt unnecessary, and you’re not missing anything crucial here. That said, I do have two negatives: - The UI: The user interface feels generic and doesn’t do justice to the charm and imagination that define the Dragon Quest series. Dragon Quest has never been minimalistic, so this feels off. - Widescreen support: Square Enix still refuses to acknowledge that widescreen users exist. Overall, this is a really good game. If you enjoy classic JRPGs that still hold up today, I highly recommend it. Modern gamers will likely find Dragon Quest VII Reimagined more accessible than Dragon Quest I, II, or III (remakes)

As someone who already played the PS1 (oof. That was a rough childhood, lol.) and the amazing remake of the 3DS, this game the devs made it, more friendly in terms of how long the game can be. Because trust me, I'd rather play the short version of this game over the PS1 version. No joke, it takes hours and I mean HOURS just to get into your first battle. Like 4 to 5 hours. Imagine back in 2000 or 2001 like me, and thinking you're going to play this GOAT of a series DQ7, and you only get talky talky and no fighy fighty. >:( Almost ruined my summer vacation, lol. The OG game can be finished around 90 to 100 hours. Anyway, the new remake of this game, is just fun. While nothing new to the table other than voice acting, which is great. More British VA in my JRPG, please. They even made it fun for the casual gamers who don't want to fight harder monsters and let's you control the game however you want. Want more EXP? SURE! Want stronger monsters? You got it. This is one of those good news or bad news to some people, they made the map shorter unlike the PS1/3DS. So if that's a deal breaker to some people.....oops? Overall, this is just my first impression, and will update my review after I see everything. But which do I prefer? Honestly, gotta go with the 3DS version. Still holds that PS1 aesthetic with next gen gameplay/art. But this game, a sold as ever. Bring on DRAGON QUEST 8!! Aka best PS2 JRPG ever!
