There's a Digimon in this game that teleports you through a maze. To have him teleport you, you must spout a bland platitude at him, such as "love is always the answer". This Digimon cringes at these cliches so much he instinctively teleports when he hears them, taking you with him. It's a pretty funny bit! This Digimon would hate 80% of the story of Digimon Story Time Stranger. Time Stranger is a fascinating game. It reminds me of something like Soul Hackers 2 or Tokyo Mirage Sessions, except where those games constrained themselves to make a smaller, tighter game about a Tokyo district and the creature-filled alternate worlds that now overlap them, Time Stranger swings for the fences and almost tries to be the Namco version of Persona. It doesn't quite pull it off. Time Stranger tries to do far too much with whatever resources, teams, and/or time they were given. Locations are often sparse, NPCs are infrequent, and some character arcs are resolved off-screen once the game realizes it's running out of road. Even so, what Time Stranger does well, it does very well. The battles are fun, and raising, customizing, and digivolving your team is consistently rewarding. There are interesting characters throughout, even if the game can't always give them the focus they deserve, and the plot has enough surprises and strong moments to keep things engaging. You're just not likely to be wowed when the all-loving female character declares all conflict is bad because it leaves everyone with less than they started with. This review probably sounds more negative than I intend, so let me be clear: battling, training, and digivolving your team is the main reason to play this game, and it delivers on that front. The characters and scenario are more than enough to carry anyone who enjoys turn-based party-collecting JRPGs like Persona, Pokemon, Suikoden, or earlier Digimon games through to the end. Overall, Digimon Story Time Stranger is an ambitious game that doesn't always reach the heights it's aiming for, but I still really enjoyed my time with it and would be excited to see something built further on this base in the future.
Bottom line up front: I recommend this game, but only on sale. Full disclosure, I love Digimon. I have over 140 hours in Cyber Sleuth and Hacker's Memory, and I grew up playing Digimon World 3. With that in mind, I think this is a genuinely great Digimon game. The Digimon themselves are easily the highlight. The models look fantastic, they all have voice lines, and the battle animations are smooth and high quality. Honestly, it feels like most of the budget went into making high fidelity Digimon models, and I am completely okay with that. The roster is huge, and there are a lot of quality of life improvements to move sets, skill learning, and stat growth. You can basically build any Digimon into an endgame viable monster with maxed stats, which is something I have wanted for years. The story is also surprisingly solid. I think it is one of the better Digimon Story plots overall and it actually has a pretty decent twist. The cinematics are great too. Jupitermon and GraceNovamon fighting Chronomon is chef's kiss. The music was another big standout for me. I honestly think it is a noticeable improvement over recent Digimon entries. That said, this game has some major problems. At 70 dollars, it is massively overpriced. It feels even worse when you realize how much content was carved out into expensive day one DLC. The season pass pricing is absurd considering how much of it is reused assets and locations. If you want Digimon like MetalGarurumon Black or BlackWarGreymon, you have to pay extra just to unlock their evolution lines. That is ridiculous, and I refuse to support it. The other big issue is that the game feels old despite being brand new. If you have played something like Shin Megami Tensei V, Time Stranger feels like stepping backward in time, which is crazy because SMT V itself is already old at this point. Like previous Digimon Story games, most of the gameplay is still just running back and forth through narrow corridors for 80% of the game. What makes that especially frustrating is that the Digital World itself looks incredible. The environments feel huge, magical, expansive, and full of life. Then you realize most of it is just background parallax that you never actually get to explore. Honestly, this game would have benefited massively from an open zone structure like Xenoblade Chronicles II, SMT V, or even Pokemon Legends Arceus. You play as an Agent investigating anomalies, but there is barely any actual exploration. The setting and premise were perfect for it. There are also a bunch of smaller issues that add up. The protagonist is barely voiced outside of random reactions like yelling "Wow!" when finding items, so there is really no reason there could not have been character customization. The human character rigging is also rough in a lot of scenes. The game constantly gives you fake dialogue choices where all 2 or 3 options lead to the exact same response and change absolutely nothing. Some areas also feel incredibly underdeveloped, like they were either cut content or thrown together at the last second. The Dark Zone especially stands out there. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with Digimon Time Stranger. The Digimon themselves, the music, the cinematics, and the customization systems carry the experience hard. But the outdated structure, lack of exploration, and aggressive DLC pricing keep it from feeling like the modern evolution this series desperately needs.
I love the base game. Great story, great characters, great experience. Highly recommend the game. For all that's holy, DO NOT BUY THE SEASON PASS! All 3 of the DLCs are cookie cutter in design, and even the additional digimon aren't worth the price tag, especially when 5 of 15 of them are Omnimon variants. Yes, I just came from finishing DLC3 to post a positive review about Digimon STS but to also warn against the season pass. For as passionate as I am about the base game, the DLCs instill a great burning apathy in me, they are so freaking mediocre and not worth your time or effort. Except for Blackagumon and Blackgabumon. I do recommend them. That's not the season pass, and unlike the DLCs, you can access the Black mons from the start of the base-game's storyline. The DLCs are scaled for end-game, so everything they offer does nothing for you because you've already max-statted your end-game team and have every base-game digimon.
Though I still think Digimon World is the better series, this is definitely an improvement over Cyber Sleuth. The story is more interesting, collecting and training Digimon is more fun and streamlined to not be such a grind any more, and the world is more detailed. Over all a big improvement from the last Digimon Story game!
