God, I suck at this game. 20 hours in and I still haven't completed it. I'm not too bitter though, as I can still meta grind my way to success and I'm just having a blast playing with random weapons each time. Whilst you do have the option to have a fixed weapon run, I actually love the option of randomness. Each weapon and ability is a whole new experience and there's so much to unlock. The level layouts are randomised, but there are challenge and puzzle rooms to unlock, with secret rooms from the get-go if you know where to look. No 2 games are the same. I like to think of this game as being set in the 80's. The music vibes and level design just transport me back. I've still got lots of story to unlock, so will stick with it til the end. If you like this, try Hades for the similar combat and story elements, or try Tombstar or Cavity Busters for more arcadey type fun.

The soundtrack is amazing, the visuals are so lush and vibrant, and the combat is smooth, and accommodating. A couple notes: I've had a couple of strokes, and as such my hands don't work so well. Lucid mode in the game gradually inches me toward a reduction in difficulty, which my erratic hands appreciate. Also, I can't really remember faces anymore, so everyone in the game being faceless, and yet very emotive, is very cathartic and I appreciate it a lot. This game was probably unintentionally tailor-made for me. :)

Bought this game on console and steam. combat is fluid, progression is not to hard, mechanics pretty well easy to learn. The story is very engaging, it reminds me of some the things I've been through myself. Very Recommended to play. Love this game.

Satisfying. Good messages. This game takes a bit to get going and I honestly wasn't hooked on it at first, or so I thought, but I found myself thinking, "well, I've got 30min before I gotta leave.....I can get in a few levels or a round" and then would be playing....and playing....and playing. The dialogue in the real world can be a bit forced/lame at times but it is also an example of how people should properly interact and hold conversations about difficult and sensitive topics. I did find myself reading every word and enjoying the development of the relationships and the development of the protagonist and the overall story. I found myself wanting to get deeper in the nightmares not to beat the dreams but to gather resources because I was interested in developing the relationships. I will recommend having a guide open on which gifts to give to which character. If your goal is to 100% the list and max out everyone's relationships you'll want to do this. Some of the gifts require a fair amount of resources to craft and if you get it wrong, you just blew a lot of time for, essentially, nothing. Using a guide did not diminish the gameplay experience, in fact I found it made it more relaxing and enjoyable because I didn't have to stress over blowing resources on the wrong person. You will probably already have to run the nightmares multiple times so it doesn't diminish the gameplay experience (especially if you are looking to 100% every weapon then you will be doing the levels A LOT). I appreciate that so many builds work well and I often found myself surprised by skill combos that worked well together. As a player you do need to be a bit more flexible in your builds and goals because there are so many items to randomly sift through. It's a repetitive game by nature but it was soothing and familiar to run the gauntlet and adjust the difficulty that when I quit playing I felt a little sad because it had become part of the daily routine to run a few rounds. Overall, if you're new to this genre of game, this is a good entry level game. Well built, relatively satisfying, responsive controls, connection to real world issues and maybe will help you through a tough time.

It starts slowly, but it gets better over time. The true enjoyment of this game is only revealed after a considerable amount of grinding (20ish runs) and the selection of the nightmare difficulty for bosses and enemies, which provides a greater variety and challenge to the game. The biggest issue with this game is that each completed run can take quite a while (average of 45 minutes) and the player is always one or two mistakes from dying, so each run is very intensive.
