Duke of Alpha Centauri is a space shoot 'em up that is easy to play but get's progressively harder as you progress through the planet systems. The attacks come as sorties and you must destroy a set number of enemy vehicles in various of realtime stages. Your ship is equipped with shields and a hardened hull so you can take some abuse from the incoming fire and obstacles (with a repair button). Some of your enemies have their own hardened hulls and shields requiring multiple and prolonged gun fire to destroy. There are twenty levels and two boss stages (level 10 and 20). One thing I like about this game is the continued upgrades of the ships subsystems (based on points and player levels) really mean something and makes the vessel oh so much more powerful. The final level is 20, and after that you can play an endless level for as long as you like. The only down point to the game is the lack of more levels to play and the lack of variety in the enemy craft. Graphics are excellent, fantastic backgrounds and well animated and colorful ships and asteroids. They move smoothly and are pleasing to look at. Music is very good, and sound effects pop and explode with satisfying results. Game plays well with an xbox or similar controller. I personally use a Logitech F710 (my favorite). Highly recommended for space scrolling shoot 'em up fans!

I recommend this if it is on sale. Currently it's on sale for only 49p which is well worth it. 49p for a addictive shoot'em up. I've managed to 100% perfect this in under 3 hours getting all the achievements. No replay value. Not worth the full price. Only get if on sale.

This is a decent game, especially for the price (I got it on sale for 59 cents). The music is well done if you like the sort of club music style. The achievements are easy to get. The game offers a couple hours of game play with decent controls and pretty sound effects. The game isn't perfect. Early on the loading screens are longer than the levels. The asteroids are much weaker graphically than everything else on the screen so they distract. The hit box on your ship is slightly bigger than your ship, so you will get hit by stray fire when you are not expecting. However, the level design is well done. You earn experience and upgrades for your ship, and I was able to customize my playstyle as I got a sense for how the game progressed. You get a good feeling of power with all of the bells and whistles they throw on your ship, and yet control is pretty easy. Overall I think it is worth it if you are into this genre, especially for the price.

This is a simple concept bullet hell game. I like it. It does have a quirk, where you sometimes cannot get to the level selection screen, but it is minor in comparison to how fun the game is. It isn't hard, even on the highest levels, if you upgrade your weapons and ship, but it still requires some hand-eye coordination. 7.5 / 10 in a bundle. 5/10 at full retail.
